none of that Bitches Brew/Blue Train/Shape of Jazz to Come/Duotones stuff.

I have one: Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones' No Way!, which is a pretty fantastic soul-jazz LP from the early '70s.

Doug Carn is obscure if you're not a big jazz fan.

Byard Lancaster's "It's Not Up To Us" is brilliant

Archie Shepp's "Coral Rock" if you're feeling adventerous

maybe these are too unobscure, but i'd recommend grachan moncur's "evolution" and jackie mclean's "destination out!" both very much in the same vein, early 60s "new thing" jazz; mclean explores some interesting variations on free playing and modality and moncur whips up some great post-mingus/monk/coleman compositions

I don't know how 'obscure' these are, but they're all great, non-obvious picks, and they're all still in print:

Blackstone Legacy - Woody Shaw (one of the first and best post-Bitches Brew albs)

Infinte Search - Miroslav Vitous (terrific proto-fusion alb w/Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock and John McLaughlin)

Electric Funk - Jimmy McGriff (does exactly what it says on the tin - sounds a lot like the Meters in places)

Sahara - McCoy Tyner (Amazingly intense semi-free 70s rec w/ the great Sonny Fortune on sax)

Divine Love - Wadada Leo Smith (early ECM superstar sesh w/ lots of 'little instruments')

Basra - Pete LaRoca (One of the best and most obscure 60s Blue Note albs)

Ming - David Murray (outstanding large group recording from the early 80s)

The Pilgrim and the Stars - Enrico Rava (another early ECM alb that edges into free jazz - Rava is an Italian trumpeter who, like Tomasz Stanko, fell early under the spell of Davis/Baker melancholy)

Flexible Flyer - Roswell Rudd (terrific 74 session from the great out trombone player, w/ my fave jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan)

Smack Up - Art Pepper ('Meets the Rhythm Section' is generally considered to be the classic Pepper rec, but this one, recorded a cpl of years later w/ a fair less starry combo, is even more swingin' - post-Parker bop that burns like the best Jackie McClean discs)

There, that's ten.

Jamaaladeen Tacuma: "Renaissance Man". A great album of Ornette Coleman style free funk (Tacuma was a bassist in Coleman's band, and Coleman makes an appearance on one track), spiced with some electro drums, spoken-word poetry and strings. It might be hard to find this, though, since to my knowledge it's never been reissued on CD (why?).
