The Ivan Smagghe thread

So, "How to kill the dj" one of last years top5 best mix cds, no question. "Death disco" kinda boring, "Hard!" not so sure about yet (only just got it), not heard black strobe, not heard him play in a club.

But a random frenchman I met in Zouk said he roolz paris right now.

Basically was that one genius mix an aberration or is he the next coming? Is black strobe worth searching? Does he always have that darkcore/electro/detroit crossover thing going on?

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Hard! the new Bugged Out one? He seems to be working awfully hard.

I've not seen him, I like some Black Strobe, search their remixes of Ghosttrack by Tiefschwarz, Number One by Playgroup, and maybe their own tracks Fitting Together and Innerstrings too. I like Me and Madonna but alot of other ILXers didn't.

That mix really is wicked, I've been checking out alot of that Get Physical Music stuff after loving that Chelonis R Jones track Blackout so much.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Italian Fireflies is well worth finding as well and his "how to kill the DJ" mix on tigersushi ..

The Blackstrobe thread.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

People on the blackstrobe thread seemed to like Death Disco. I thought it was super-snooze.

Ronan, I dunno if Hard! is bugged out or not - got it on slsk.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm, so what do people call this kind of music these days?

I got the sampler for the Bugged Out cd, and it's great, I've got high hopes for the mix now.

But he plays exactly what the dance scene has been missing for the last couple of years, to my mind.

The trouble with the influence of electroclash was that there were all these great tracks coming out that were full of energy and excitement, but that you couldn't actually dance to, and that were missing that kind of strange, surprising twists that raise dancefloors to another level. It was all "here it is" laying the theme of the track right out on a plate for you.

But Smagghe's selections are so genius. Stuff like the Scratch Massive track on the Bugged Out mix, and the Digital Tongue remix on "How to kill" have that fucked-up head-bending sound that makes you want to be on drugs and going nuts in a way that (I personally) haven't heard in a while.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 22 April 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
this post on ronan's blog needs a bigger audience. the new enthusiasm!

etc, Monday, 31 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I am listening to 'Kill the DJ' right now, I don't have the word skilxors to do it justice but oh my god. It seems like the early segues are almost deliberately clumsily done, so that when it gets going you just get this feeling of total acceleration to somewhere, I dunno. I reckon Ronan is dead right to call it goth.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

wait 'til you see black strobe live. total goth!

stirmonster, Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the new French new wave thing on tigersushi, So Young but So Cold, is all selected by Smagghe, and it's killer. taken together with those metal boys & dr. mix reissues (not to mention that max berlin track from More GDM), and it's time to stop renaming fries and whatnot. the french were on it.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

wait 'til you see black strobe live. total goth!

OTM.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

where the fuck is the black strobe album

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that So Young but So Cold thing does sound fantastic. In a recent issue of French mag Magic, Smagghe was running through the tracks and most of it sounded very intriguing.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ivan Smagghe dj sets>>>>>>black strobe records

I just want him to release three more mixes this year...

Last year we got "Hard!", "Death Disco" and "How to kill the DJ"

I won't be satisfied with less than 4 cds this year.

And if this is goth, pass me the eyeliner!

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

arnaud bumps up the goth factor considerably.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

his dj sets just make me want to do coke

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixed with K and 2cb...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

2cb does not sound pleasant.

i recently bought "suck my deck" and it's quite good/punishing/sleazy. the "dead eyes opened" remix makes me very happy

tricky disco, Friday, 11 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

>>Last year we got "Hard!", "Death Disco" and "How to kill the DJ"

Wasn't Death Disco from this year?

While we are on the subject, I recently downloaded this mix that was labeled as being compiled by Mr Smagghe. Can anyone confirm this? It's not as electro/sleazy as his current mixes, but still pretty good.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Kill the DJ Part 2 will be even better.

Ivan is HOTTTTTT!!!!!!!!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 June 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

What even /is/ 2cb? I am twee.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan once again critically ejaculates all over something i find boring as hell. i need to stop listening to him already. nearly three years of this shit.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually that's unfair; he's turned me on to tons of good stuff. just that his um infectuousness is sometimes better than the records themselves.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

part 2 now delayed until september. bah!

stirmonster, Friday, 11 June 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

was the mixing not up to scratch?*

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jess you are v v wrong about mr. smagghe.

i heard kill the dj 2 for the first time this morning. it's awesome. fave moment on first listen was when the nww track comes in (i hadn't looked at the tracklisting so wasn't expecting it).

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

my smagghe-related thoughts. i think he is very inconsistent - or maybe too consistent, in track choice and mixing - and at his worst he sux0rz.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

benny benassi >>>> ivan smagghe

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

after a long swerve away vahid and strongo are back on track together

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very...grey sounding to me. like extruded siding. or those ceiling panels in a public school.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Smagghe could afford to be a bit more pop or a bit less consistently electro (it would be great to see a return of those really grunty rock tracks like Par-T-One's "I'm So Crazy") but I think the mixes still work really really well. They need to be very loud though (which is pretty obv. when it comes to stuff like this).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

and i have NO idea what simon r is hearing in it that makes it the "best dj mix he's heard in ages"...it's a baffling choice for someone claiming to be at an all-time-low irt "generic" dancemusic

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

aye jed, when i found out you can't handle anything over 122bpm, i decided to scrap it and start again. it is now going to be renamed 'noodle the dj'.

sacem, the french music facists are refusing to release the manufactured copies for some unfathomable reason. the french do love their bureaucracy. so much so that they gave us the freaking word!

stirmonster, Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard kill the dj 2 for the first time this morning. it's awesome. fave moment on first listen was when the nww track comes in (i hadn't looked at the tracklisting so wasn't expecting it).

how the fuck did you hear it? i don't even have a copy of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stirmonster, Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree, it is grey, but grey in a REALLY GOOD WAY. If i were synaesthetic I'd describe a smagghe mix as looking a bit like halfway between a charcoal grey wool jumper and a cinderblock. Kind of gloomy and imposing, but full of wonderful little detail when you get up close.

And as has been observed, listening to it makes you want to DO DRUGS. Which can be a good thing.

2cb is... Kind of indescribable.

Jacob (Jacob), Saturday, 12 June 2004 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Smagghe could afford to be a bit more pop or a bit less consistently electro (it would be great to see a return of those really grunty rock tracks like Par-T-One's "I'm So Crazy") but I think the mixes still work really really well. They need to be very loud though (which is pretty obv. when it comes to stuff like this).

I am not sure the tracks are there, re Par-T-One! Which I admit is a shame, though perhaps by circumstance I am forced to go to too many clever nights to hear the good big stuff like that.

Is that new Benny Benassi mix any good then? I gave up on Subliminal ages ago. I agree that Simon R's enthusiasm for this stuff is odd, at the same time, without denigrating the quality of individual singles over the last 2 years, in 02 or 03 were there really any mixes as good as the Smagghe ones?

I mean not microhouse ones? Waves II perhaps? 2manydjs?

I'm not so sure, yet at the same time, crucially, perhaps the quality of his mixes is indicative of a lack of quality in the singles arena, ie he's good at picking the best stuff, in a time when there are no obvious choices, obvious choices of course homogenise all the mixes a bit, like in 2002. Not so much last year I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 June 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

how the fuck did you hear it? i don't even have a copy of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm afraid it's err on slsk. there's only one guy sharing it though, and it took me a week to get it off him (and don't worry, i moved it out of my share folder immediately, so it's probably still almost impossible to get).

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 12 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks toby. a few copies were given to journalists so that'll be how it got out. i forgot to make a back up before it went for mastering, hence i don't have a copy myself.

stirmonster, Saturday, 12 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

just that his um infectuousness is sometimes better than the records themselves

to be fair though, strongo, you could lob this kind of accusation at many critics and ilm does this kind of thing all the time (basement jaxx, dizzee...) i'm not saying that it's necessarily bad, i think it's more like a fact of life.

tricky disco, Saturday, 12 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

So is this all good goth or not? Let's boil this down to the key question.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

in 02 or 03 were there really any mixes as good as the Smagghe ones

yeah, exactly. i'd say the "waves i" and "waves ii" mixes, the gus gus dj mix and the david guetta dj mix are all at least as good. then there's the kompakt juggernaut, the fabric mixes from lu cont and bent and mayer, villalobos' taka taka mix and so on.

i'd rather see smagghe concentrate on his production, his tracks are easily the best on those discs.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 12 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and the benny benassi mix is really good if you have a tolerance for big stupid crowd-pleasing populist house. i think it's a return to form for subliminal. it's not quite as good as harry romero's but it's almost there. it jumps around a bit too much stylistically to be that good.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 12 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

it should be noted that all the blackstrobe stuff i've heard, in isolation, i've liked quite a bit. why wasn't there anything as tough as the tiefschwarz remix on any of these mixes, etc? i am all for a bleep revival but i need some "we are backs" to go with the "testones".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the waves mixes are very samey to me too (this is perhaps more forgivable because they are also label comps), but they also have big fuck off riffs and horns and such.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

also i will say that i am looking forward to the twitchmix, so much so that i will even buy it (haha and not just because he is reading this).

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the waves mixes are kind of evil. I love them.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having the derrrnedest timing appreciating Smagghe's Suck My Deck - it leaves me so, hmm, indifferent? Maybe while I battle my sinus infection, and am therefore under the influence of prescription meds, maybe I'll give it another whirl and learn to at least like it.

Actually, listening to it one more time will allow me to better articulate (beyond a "no likey" opinion) what I feel it lacks.

Maybe it's too polished? Too perfect? Insufficiently challenging-slash-rewarding? Like I said, I'll get back to all y'all on this one.

nader (nader), Saturday, 12 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
Please help: should I go and see Ivan Smagghe DJ or Steve Bug DJ/Luciano live tomorrow night? I so cannot make up my mind.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Smagghe, for me, is a DJ. Bug I am unsure of, never seen him, but he does strike me as a sort of solid respected citizen of mediocre to good, sometimes worthy causes, or a good label boss/music guy, as long as it's other people he's managing. I dunno, maybe a bit harsh but he's never done anything I thought was astounding.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm certainly not a steve bug apologist but his remix of freak's 'the creeps' was a top tune.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

AHEM

Luciano people!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

i didn't mention luciano as the gig has already passed but going to see luciano goes without saying.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah word on the "the creeps" remix, of course, very overplayed by now but so fucking solid.

you going to glastonbury twitch?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

which one did you end up seeing? i've seen both smagghe and bug spin, and they were both great, but i like smagghe better. bug's a bit more smooth, more..i dunno, tasteful. smagghe is more freaky and ominous, which i like.

geeta, Thursday, 16 June 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Bug outperformed my expectations actually at the night Geeta and I went to. I was sold, which is odd because I never bothered enough with Bugnology to give it more than a couple of listens.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 June 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

not this year ronan. i'm going to be in paris and bergen next weekend. i shall go one of these years. are you going?

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 16 June 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

We ended up at Steve Bug. Luciano cancelled. I asked why and everyone had a different story - sick baby, missed flight, influenza... hmmm. I see that he saved Mutek a few nights before. I wonder if that had something to do with it? But it was a good night but not a great night. I was suprised Steve Bug didn't play much of his own stuff, and tended to straddle the line between straightish house and more experimental sonic stuff.

stirmonster, are you playing in Tokyo tomorrow night? I hope I can make it down (we came last time at Cay and chatted a bit afterwards) Yellow is maybe the best venue in Tokyo so it should be fun. Also, my friend Mel Bruce is warming up for you!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 16 June 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

yes I am going to glastonbury, not a whole lot I am psyched to see music wise, but a whole lot of nice people going and the usual atmosphere, can't wait!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

hey good dog. did you come down last night? yellow was great - i wish more clubs in the uk had sound like that and were as designed specifically for dancing as that. the enthusiasm and friendliness of the crowd was such a buzz too - japan rocks! i met your friend mel really briefly (she was playing in the upstairs room) but we had to go straight to the airport after we finished playing so didn't get to chat much. i am now in amsterdam with a 5 hour wait to get home. i don't even know what day it is.

anyway, i can't wait to come back again - tokyo is possibly my favourite city in the world. hopefully we are going to do a japan only mix cd later this year so should be back around november.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

ps - you should have gone to see ivan. he was playing with ata from playhouse who is one of the best and most underrated djs i've ever heard.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Did you peep the Japanese line dancing?

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

stirmonster, sorry I just couldn't make it. I was prepping a bbq for the next day and time ran out. I'm glad you had a good night. It's really hard to have a bad one with that sound system I imagine. I'll look forward to November.

I finally chose not to see Smagghe because I'm not so into the gothy Black Strobe EBM vibe, but it turns out he doesn't DJ this style by himself. Foiled! My girlfriend will see him, Isolee and Craig Richards at Fabric in late July and will report back.

I'm glad you like Tokyo! and what's this about line dancing???

Good Dog (Good Dog), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Smagghe was ace ace ace in Osaka but he only dj'd for like an hour; I'd never heard of Ata before and he really is fantastic.

He's playing an eight-hour set in Farringdon on Saturday. How are his sets these days? I remember seeing him around 2004-ish and he was awesome, proper big-room stuff at the techier end of electrohouse. A couple of years later he'd gone minimal in a fairly hamfisted way and was just playing fairly lumpen tech-house.
