Is Vince Clarke reuniting with Depeche Mode?

at the weekend my friend (who himself has friends in the industry) told me it's rumored that both Vince Clarke and Andy Bell are currently talking with Martin, Dave, Andy and Alan about the possibility of a one-off collaborative album. the concept would involve writing all new songs under the umbrella of both band's histories and, intriguingly, according to my friend, this might lead to Alison Moyet and Feargal Sharkey contributions. has anyone else heard about this?

(I only giggle at the really stupid ones)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like an extremely bizarre example of wishful thinking to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard fergal sharkey was working at the citizen's advice bureau, these days.

"Sounds like an extremely bizarre example of wishful thinking to me."

I agree - it's very likely, but by whom? neither my friend nor I are particular fans of Depeche Mode or any of the associated outfits. if my friend was doing the wishful thinking, it would amount to yet another full genesis renunion (you see, nothing remarkable there); if it were me, I suppose I might wish for Julian Cope, Ian McCulloch, Pete Wylie together as The Crucial Three.

j. c. gray, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha someone (another music industry "insider") told me last year that genesis were going to be doing a tour w/peter gabriel singing!! No sign of this happening yet, strangely enough!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

thinking about it, Paul Quinn's name wasn't mentioned in connection with this bygones project, but I suppose if it is true, he'd be included. i don't know, it's v likely bull, although stranger things 'av happened..

j.c. gray, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That has to be the most horrible idea at all, ever, full stop.

___ (___), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

as rumors go, I wouldn't say this one is blasphemous, but I accept your point..

j.c. gray, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
There are indeed rumbles on this front ;-)

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but didn't Erasure just put out a new disc relatively recently? I'm pretty sure Vince has his hands full at the moment.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Let's just put it this way: I am in a position to know!

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Well, wait here then while I run and go put on my bear constume and do a little dance for you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Do you shit in the woods as well as over people's feelings?

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I have just re-read your post and now I'm not sure that you were insulting me, actually. SO no hard feelings I hope..
I just meant that I am quite close to Vince, and can confirm that he is set to rejoin the lads on the condition that Andy can sing on some tracks.

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

You know, smoking a crack pipe is not a gainful means of employment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Kung. It's just that there was no pre-cursor to your comment. You just appeared out of the blue with a rather portentuous statement with no back-up. No hard feelings at all (and none, really, to begin with).

By Andy singing on some tracks, are we talking in the studio? On tour? It seems awfully awkward given the timing (both acts still promoting new material).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

No suggestion of a tour just yet and, to be honest, I doubt a tour would or could ever happen. Martin Gore is bringing his guitar around next Sunday - it really is as informal as that. And it's very early days. Things could go pear shaped - I know Vince is already not terribly happy, especially as Andy would be on board, with doing it all uder the name Depeche Mode. We'll see..

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Martin Gore is bringing his guitar around next Sunday - it really is as informal as that.

Let's see now. Depeche plays San Diego this Saturday and then LA a week from today, so yes, theoretically Martin could 'bring his guitar around' to England on Sunday. That this makes no sense at all and you are inventing this B.S. is a little more likely, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Depends where Vince and Andy are, I guess.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Vince has a house in England, yes, but that's not where said guitar is bound, Ned.. Hate a little less, dude!

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Andy is in St. Petersburg this Saturday

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Hate a little less, dude!

I have absolutely no goddamn reason to believe you, ergo I will not. Prove to me otherwise why I should.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Right, so Andy is in St Pete's, where is Vince?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Ned's steppin' it up today!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

When is Vince NEIL gonna jam with das Mode? That's what I'm jonesing for.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm stepping it up because all these explanations are jokes. What the hell is THIS about:

I know Vince is already not terribly happy, especially as Andy would be on board, with doing it all uder the name Depeche Mode.

Tell me that makes any sense at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Derasure Yassemblodeoo.

Derasure Yassemblodeoo.

I do still love that idea!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Um, that's interesting about Andy whereabouts, Ned.
But.. Well, Vince won't be with Andy. He will be with Martin Gore, as I said. Not that the geography matters - even if Andy wanted to meet with Martin at this stage, we have an isdn line. Why are you so crazed in your googling?!

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

It's not exactly that hard to google official tour dates on official sites. Neither is it hard to laugh at these bizarre ideas you are putting forth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

I have heard from a good authority that Bonehead will be joining Oasis for a 25 minute version of Octopus's Garden at a secret gig at Burnage British Legion club next week.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Amazing!

As far as Martin and Vince ever wanting to meet up and songwrite or whatever, stranger indeed has happened. That there could be a completely separate sideproject album like the Clarke/Ware thing, again, strange but not impossible. But the idea that Vince rejoins only on condition that Andy sings and all that -- how much crack do you seriously have to smoke to think that is even logical? And that is why, Kung, I don't believe you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

If you know the lads' history, as I guess, judging by your excitable posts, you do, I can see why it would seem bizarre to you, as it did to me when Vince told me a year ago that Martin had put the idea to him. I was more surprised by Vince's reaction, which was suddenly all never say never, because he had always given me the impression that the last thing he desired was reconciliation.

Fine, you don't believe me, Ned, if that suits you. Vince has told me exacly why he wants Andy in with him, but I think I've said enough here now.

Kung, Monday, 14 November 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I think I might perhaps believe you a bit more if you weren't the same person who posted the separate Vince Clarke back with Depeche Mode thread elsewhere today, not to mention someone who's never posted beforehand, and is posting now under various random troll-like identities.

So, fine -- you turn out to be right, I apologize to a totally anonymous figure. You turn out to be wrong, I feel extremely unsurprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Um, since this thread seems temporaily untouched, what the fuck is going on with all that pooping pokemon? On the plus side, disabling ILX will certainly ween me. On the negative, I Love ILX.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Can I just say that the Kung/Alex in NYC exchange at the beginning of this thread revival is awesome?

Maybe Kung is Feargal Sharkey.

Orange, Friday, 7 April 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

He participated in the documentary DVD following the current "Speak & Spell" remaster. I guess that may be the background for the rumours.

Clarke and Gore/Gahan have gone in completely different musical directions since "Speak & Spell" and I cannot see any reason why any of them would feel the need for a reunion of the 1981 lineup.

Erasure just released their own acoustic unplugged album, oddly enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

are they plannig to re-record the pre speak and spell material ? after listening to some 1980 gigs, i'm not too sure they should go that route . . .

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I LIKE it, I LIKE it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

actually, television set isn't that bad. was listening to some live performances earlier from such delighful venues as southend-on-sea technical college and st.nicholas school in basildon (which might be a bad re-hash of the bridgehouse one and something else cobbled together)

anyone heard the last few seconds of dreaming of me off the remastered speak and spell? so THAT'S why it fades out . .

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

An acoustic unplugged album by Erasure is not as weird as it sounds. Sure, they are a synthpop band, and all of their albums have had a very synth-heavy sound (most exclusively electronic even).

Yet, Erasure unplugged is considerably less weird than Kraftwerk unplugged. Vince Clarke has always been a very traditional songsmith, writing good old-fashioned popsongs, songs that will work with whatever backing possible. And I guess an unplugged album is a great way to prove that.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 7 April 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

we need more pop songs.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 8 April 2006 10:00 (twenty years ago)

geir: my review of the album said almost exactly that. fact remains, though, it's still not a very good record. bring the hits, boys, not the B-sides.

anyone heard the last few seconds of dreaming of me off the remastered speak and spell?

the laughing and clanking and whooping? i've had this for years ... somewhere ... hasn't it always been on the S&S CD?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 9 April 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

couldn't tell you - i've had it on vinyl since i turned a teenager.
