After announcing their split and retirement from the music industry last year, Cornershop have reformed and signed to Rough Trade. A single is out in June with an album to follow. Anyone as excited as I am yet ?

i don't get it - this post -- is it sarcastic? is it honestly joyful. i dunno. suppose that is why i stopped posting to ilx.

doomiex, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even know they broke up HA.

now that we KNOW FOR SURE this is a deterrent we can use it even more

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Meh. I didn't like the last album much at all save a couple of really good tunes.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

They split? Seriously? When?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah, they've reformed because of the new Morrissey album.

"Look, new publicity photos to tear up!"

Oooo. Like it is a big problem, what, having to deal with my four posts a month. Yr in for some timeless boohooing!

doomiex, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even know they broke up HA.

Yeah, count me in to this reaction as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

If they did break up, I'm sure wiija will be having a nice chat with Rough Trade about a few things.

___ (___), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know they'd broken up either. Are you sure they did? Anyway, I like forward to their next album; their last one was a corker.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This is great - I was just wondering what they were up to over the weekend, because I listened to some of the songs from their last few records and was reminded how great they were/are. This is perfect timing.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Stealth marketing, anyone?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even know they broke up HA.

Me neither. Of course, I'm not very good at keeping up on that sort of thing.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Tjinder released a press statement sometime last year saying he was quitting music after the relative failure of their last album, and the treatment he thought he'd recieved by Wiija (he claimed they weren't promoting the band enough). Typically the media pretty much ignored the news, which is why a lot of people here didn't know they'd split.
My original post, by the way, was not sarcastic-I've always been a fan although the albums somehow never quite lived up to the promise of the singles, and ok, I'm not exactly jumping for joy at the news of their new releases-they're only a band after all- I am quietly pleased.

Steve Ayres, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I Like That Side Project Clinton.
Anyone else Like That Album?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i did an interview with tjinder once and he was a big fanny. really unpleasant. the people at beggars/wiija said that he wasn't normally like that but i got the feeling he's a bit up his own arse. apologies to friends relatives and him but i'm happy to hear they split up and nonplused about the reform .

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care if he's a jerk. "People Power," "Brimful Of Asha," and "Lessons Learned From Rocky I To Rocky III" are so good that it doesn't matter.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

they're ok. but i find it hard to like the music of people who have personally insulted me. but that is another thread i guess. can anyone really see them surpassing the material mentioned above by Matthew?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Given the fact that I like each new Cornershop record more than the last, it's not unreasonable to suspect that the next one would be as good or better than Handream For A Generation. The Clinton records were pretty good too - they never make totally consisent records, so as long as there are three or four really good songs, that's fine with me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just listening to "OK Computer" the other day and remembering how that year it was all about Radiohead and Cornershop in the music press... and wondering where the heck Cornershop even went. Someone must've dropped the promotional ball if they could release anything beyond "When I was born for the 7th time" and break up and I don't even hear about it. then again, that was right around the time I stopped reading magazines, so what do I know...

zac, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew OTM: "Brimful" [obv] and "Lessons Learned" is fantastic, fantastic stuff. For sure they could do even better: why not?

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, 'Hold On, It Hurts" is actually their best album.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, I can't believe I forgot to mention "We're In Yr Corner" earlier!

Other great Cornershop tunes: "6 A.M. Jullandar Shere," "Wog," "Sleep On The Left Side," "Butter The Soul," "Funky Days Are Back Again," "Staging the Plaguing of the Raised Platform," "Heavy Soup," "Music Plus One," "Spectral Mornings," "Where d'U Get Your Information," and "Kalluri's Radio."

They're a good band!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard Cornershop.

um, i've met him a couple of times & he seemed a really nice guy, more shy than anything else.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Perpetua. Every song that Singh actually sings on I've enjoyed. It's the instrumentals that usually annoy me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Which nation?

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard "People Power In The Disco Hour" (the Clinton
version).

And "Brimful Of Asha" for years now, but they the songs are
so groovy I remember every note.

I didn't care for the Cornershop version of "People Power"
as much. It seemed like an unecessary simplification.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

saw them live a few years back, sucked. i agree tjinder seemed up his own arse. fuck them.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny that they're signing to Rough Trade when Rough Trade's in-house press officer is, er, Ben Ayers from, er, Cornershop...still, glad they're back together!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the Handcream version of "People Power" - it's more disco, more pop. The Clinton version is great too, but a bit slower.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

sixteen years pass...

I've really enjoyed the new one the few times I've thought to play it. Great weekend morning tunes.
