Does The Squirrels "Seasons In The Sun/The Hustle" count as a medley?

Dance to the Medley on Sly & the Family Stone's Dance to the Music album.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fiery Furnaces are pretty great at playing their songs in medleys when they perform live.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think so, but it might take time to think of examples.

How many songs have to be linked together in order to count as a medley? Two isn't enough is it?

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

James Brown to thread.

(spec. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag/I Feel Good/I Got the Feeling, the hyperspeed versions connected by the crazy hits on Love Power Peace)

"The Lark in the Morning/Rakish Paddy/Fox-Hunter's Jig/Toss The Feathers" from Fairport Convention's "Liege and Lief". Actually, search a whole bunch of British/Celtic artists for good instrumental medleys -- Bothy Band, Planxty, De Danaan, Albion Band, etc.

"Golden Shower of Hits (Jerks on 45)" by the Circle Jerks!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have a promo 12" with a live medley by Soul Asylum (I know....of all bands) who play "Free For All" by Nugent, "Birth School Work Death" by the Godfathers, "Body Slam" by Bootsy's Rubber Band, "Oops Upside Your Head" by the Gap Band and... and....."Peaceful Easy Feelin'" by the Eagles.

Sounds ridiculous, yes, but it was quite cool.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The medleys on Farmers Market's Musikk Fra Hybridene are good fun.
Though the Eurovision Song Contest one doesn't make much sense for people younger than a certain age, I suppose.

Do two songs count as a "medley", though?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i think there should be surfin bird proviso that protects 2-song combos from the stigma of "medley"

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

PM Dawn have a nice one at the end of Jesus Wept: 1999/Once In A Lifetime/Coconut (Prince/Talking Heads/Nillson).

dlp9001, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ruins "Prog Rock Medley" is absolutely amazing. They get through about 35 prog songs in 3 minutes (Yes, Kansas, Gentle Giant etc etc), thus turning the most long-winded form of music there is into non-existent attention span cartoon soundtracks. Their other medleys (Black Sabbath, Mahavishnu Orchestra, hard rock, classical, more?) seemed a bit redundant after that.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Which Talking Heads song did PM Dawn do?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of prog rock medleys, I agree that the Ruins one is fun, particularly since they manage to snip in so many obscurities that you'd never expect in such a thing (search rec.music.progressive and you'll find a near-complete list of all it includes, if my memory serves me correctly), but I'd also nominate Gentle Giant's "Octopus medley" that they performed live. I've only heard the one on the Playing The Fool live album, but it makes my ears smile joyfully.

soft cell's hendrix medley.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When young I was fond of the quirky cuteness of the one reprising all the songs at the end of BADII's "The Globe," but I've since revisited the record and it's mostly awful.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a band a a pretty amazing medley of Can't Always Get What You Want and Walk on the Wild Side. The two songs fit together brillianty.

poop (poop), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like medleys of electronic dance music.

I have a great Patrick Cowley megamedley with menergy/primitive world/megaton man and four or five others on it...

Also a bunch of fun house medleys from '87-'90. They pumped out a bunch of these which can contain anything from Technotronic to Fast Eddie (often in the same medley)...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

soft cell's hendrix medley.

OTM

Also, Denim did a really good one on the Novelty Rock promo CD.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I don't really like the medley (he should've played the full songs!), the segue of "Wild-Eyed Boy from Freecloud" into "All the Young Dudes" on the Ziggy Stardust OST is awesome.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the PM Dawn mention. Along with medleying "1999," "Once in a Lifetime," and "Coconut," they manage to interpolate snippets from "Mama Told Me," the Beatles' "Flying," and something from Schoolhouse Rock. "Inspired" is barely the word.

I also like the sheer insanity of Tony Orlando & Dawn colliding Del Shannon's "Runaway" into "Happy Together." It's not "good" but it's interesting.

Joseph McCombs, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Vulgar Boatmen do a fantastic live medley of Foggy Notion and Roadrunner.

jds, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure it counts as a medley (once again, do two songs constitute a medley?), but the Smiths' fusion of "Marie's the Name of His Latest Flame" to "Rusholme Ruffians" on the live Rank is fucking fantastic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have a promo 12" with a live medley by Soul Asylum (I know....of all bands) who play "Free For All" by Nugent, "Birth School Work Death" by the Godfathers, "Body Slam" by Bootsy's Rubber Band, "Oops Upside Your Head" by the Gap Band and... and....."Peaceful Easy Feelin'" by the Eagles.

That record was my first exposure to Gang of Four - they do "Damaged Goods" on here. Their live medleys were fun at the time, but what medleys do people ever get tempted to hear more than once?

dad a, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

I've always thought Elvis's American Trilogy may have been his finest moment.

Popture, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

'"An American Trilogy" is a medley of three 19th century songs—"Dixie", a blackface minstrel song that became the unofficial anthem Confederacy since the Civil War; "All My Trials", originally a Bahamian lullaby, but closely related to African American spirituals, and well-known through folk music revivalists; and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", the marching song of the Union Army during the Civil War.'

I don't know, there just seems to be something essentially Elvis about it. Plus his performance on Aloha from Hawaii is majestic. Youtube it.

Popture, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

Soft Cell's medley of "Tainted Love" with "Where Did Your Love Go" is quite nice indeed.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Squabs on Forty Fab"--Squeeze, but like some others the whole songs prob are better listening. Good job of putting the tracks together, though.

i like that prince medley where he re-recorded bits of all his singles and smashed them together (can't remember what it's called, but i have the vinyl at home)

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Roberto Roena did a tribute song for Rafael Cortijo that has a brilliant embedded melody of Cortijo songs, though it's not strictly just a medley, because the medley is framed by new material.
