It's glitch/IDM. It is overwhelmingly comprised of classic rock and disco samples. I have fallen instantly and stupidly in love with it. Sometimes Pitchfork teaches you about good things.

i've not heard this but i like him lots. worth getting, then?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely. I have all of his stuff, been a fan for awhile, but this one is his best. Download a song or two if you need convincing (start with "10 Amazing Years")

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, i don't need convincing - i'm familiar with the guy's work. seen him live, too. totally berserk, but real fun. just not so easy to get his tuff in the uk, so it may have to be a download *if* i can find it on crappy mac gnutella p2p things

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's on sonig, which might make it easier for you, dave?

todd burns (toddburns), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

he is a BAD man!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

His "beautiful stevie" still creeps me out.

DL over here. The dev/null has some very difficult appeal as well.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I still love it if I can't get round the fact that he stole Donna Summer's name (making me look like a fool in the process) and also that I think the title of this record is horrible?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what is this "sonig" of which you speak?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

he's playing live at mutek this year. should be good...can't wait to hear this as the rest of his stuff has been most impressive indeed

xpost

sonig's a record label, dave

tricky disco, Friday, 16 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

and you probably already knew that....

tricky disco, Friday, 16 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like the way he called himself 'donna summer' either. that's not ironic to me, it's simply confusing people on purpose.
and i saw him live and i hated it so much. the first two minutes were fun: this sweaty fat guy who seemed to be on drugs and danced around his laptop. but the third minute, the joke was over.
i like his music, though, i just don't get the 'live' act.
now call me rockist.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it's simply confusing people on purpose.

which is generally a pretty classic thing to do. i don't think irony has anything to do with it...

tricky disco, Friday, 16 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost == calling someone fat -- wow, that's some really great, incisive criticism.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

fat guys = infinitely cooler than skinny guys

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

damn straight roger.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

try to spot the samples. fucking fun as hell... and a great disc all around

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

nate i emailed you about this months (ok weeks) ago! and it took pfork to convince you?!!! you break my heart son! you break my heart!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, this things fun though it does peak with the first track (like 80% of great albums anyways so oh well)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You e-mailed me about it? And I missed it? What the fuck, man? Maybe I just forgot. Or you got killt by my spam filter. >:(

Actually it peaks with the last track, too. And a couple tracks in the middle ("Big Outrageous Sound Club"!!). Slap this in a CD changer with the new RJD2 and oh shit it's on now son

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

he has some records out on ADAADAT and has played London plenty of times. Search - 'Dreammaker' and 'Thet Call it The Box'

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

holy crap, this is great!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a lot like Kid 606's The Action-Packed Mentallist Brings You the Fuckin' Jams CD? That was the impression I got reading the Pitchfork review. I hope so, that album is so awesome.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Please say it is not like 606's The Action-Packed Mentallist Brings You the Fuckin' Jams.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I really think he should have named himself Donald Summer btw.

Since I Left You:sample-pop:golden K-Tel MOR springtime pastoral bliss::1979 Post Disco Crash:glitch/IDM:one of my late '70s CDR mixes popping trucker speed and imploding on itself in a frenzy of dikplay

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

He makes "Bennie and the Jets" sound interesting again for god's sake

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

He's been losing a lot of weight while on tour, what with all the jumping around and what not. And wearing a silly wig. The "fat bald guy" stuff is losing its relevance.

The tracks that Jason gave me last summer didn't make it to the album -- the album is much closer to the live show, although the screaming of "yeah, fuckers!" is missing. Jason's got kind of a tortured artist thing going on at the moment -- he likes jumping around and screaming "fuck yeah" and actually putting on a show (as opposed to sitting quietly at his laptop and checking his e-mail as the audience admires his brilliance), but there's of course a danger that he'll be smilingly dismissed as a lunatic. He threw in some more musically challenging moments at his gig in Vienna this week ('cause it was at rhiz) and told me he was happy and surprised that the room didn't clear.

But I have no critical distance, 'cause he's a friend and we're working on a record together.

one month passes...
Just got this and I am enjoying it. Scott P's review on Pitchfork nails it, though I'm not sure I like it quite as much as he does. The hook for me, as he indicates, is the last track. Some of the preceding is too all over the place on first listen, doesn't seem structured as well, but I've a feeling it will soak in. Definitely an Avalanches thing happening in terms of process (thought not mood, not at all.)

While listening to the last track I did wonder, "Do I like this nearly as much as 'Who Are You'?" It really made me want to hear the original song.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty good but oddly I didn't recognize many of the samples -- which is perhaps to the album's advantage.
