Martin Rev's 'Strangeworld'. it's 'Another Thought' in 'Techincolour'. and why has there been no ILM mention of this before?

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulate yourself on being the first. Still, I'm a bit suspicious -- when was this released?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

AMG says 2000. I've never heard any post-Suicide Rev, but echoinggrove makes it look like I've really missed out on something (nothing new, really... :)

willem (willem), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in a record store, I think Wowsville or somewhere, when i heard it and thought it was quite beautiful, and was suprised when I found out who it was. I bought it, despite not having any other post-suicide records from Rev. I've listened a few times but not in a while. It was co-produced by someone from Sahko(sp) or one of those then hip dutch? underground electronica type acts.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sahko is a a Finish label.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a notable Pan Sonic/Suicide axis. Is that who you are talking about, Dan?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm, my interest is piqued! I admit I hadn't thought anyone from the Suicide camp would be doing something truly striking these days so I'm intrigued.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The Suicide mp3 up on Fluxblog is rather good. but that's Dream baby Dream.

Also-
Sahko Records-what's good these days?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in a record store, I think Wowsville or somewhere

i think it was wowsville, and i think i was there. and i think that it's a very good, very worthy, and probably very overlooked album. i also think that dan never let me borrow it, which is why i can't be very specific in my praise.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

before hearing 'Another Thought' and 'World of Echo', i described it once as '50s sodashop rock caught up in radio interference. which would make it Joe Meek, no? in light of the recent Russell revival, though, 'Strangeland' really sounds as i described it above. just dug it out of earlier today and almost fell out of my seat. especially when "Ramblin'" started in. i urge you all to investigate, if you haven't already. i can put it up on slsk if necessary.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the record is ON Sahko...thus the connection.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you're quite right!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

it's actually on Puu, the more accessible wing of Sähkö. no co-producer as far as i can tell. WP&P by Rev himself, in NYC, 2000.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

that record is good, there's a 50's vibe to some of it as well.

duke ignition, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'tis good but i don't hear the russell connection. rev's other two solo lps, esp, 'clouds of glory' are even better.

rev hooked up with tommi from sahko when pansonic were supporting suicide, hence the release on puu.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't hear it? the candyfloss vocals? the use of echo? the pop-minimalist aesthetic? "Chalky" even gets a little lo-fi dub-vortex disco! i wonder if the Russell-isms were intentional on Rev's part.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

to say nothing of the phrasing! i just listened to it again - wouldn't want to invoke Russell's good name lightly or in vain - and i stand by my impression 110%.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i shall dig it out and give it a good listen.

stirmonster, Thursday, 15 April 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the martin rev album on sakho is actually really good. i like it a lot. jimi tenor used to record a lot on this label, too.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i find this VERY hard to believe, given Rev's other solo records...but hey i'm intrigued to hear it now.

mullygasper, Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ok don't believe me, then. i'm talking shit. it's rubbish.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting. I've got "Martin Rev", "Clouds of Glory" and "Cheyenne" (tho that is just Suicide backing tracks for the most part) and I think they're all worthwhile if not brilliant. However, the last Suicide album (what I heard of it) was dire. Still, this sounds like it could be worth investigatin'.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

dave i was addressing the idea of the thread not your assessment as to the worth of the record!
