Why do Broekn Social Scene need, like, fifty people to make that sound?

Just wondering.

I'm kinda liking the song they're playing on M2 but it sounds like a four piece indie band to me.

8 guitarists strumming the same power chord...

essentially thats what it turned out to be when i saw 'em.

yuck

some of the best early Brian Jonestown Massacre shows I saw were like that. It was like a slowly congealing chaos that ended up like a giant de facto chorus pedal. Impressionant.

they need to groom each other's beards

it's funny my roommate and i were wondering the exact same thing just now. and also noting that they could easily have been around ten years ago and you wouldn't have to change a note or nothing

"giant de facto chorus pedal."

ha!

Completely unimpressive.

- isn't that what collective soul was?

no14, Monday, 19 April 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

when i saw them they had a really reduced band featuring only two guitarists and that just sounded the same. on the actual recording i think they only ever have a couple of the members of the "collective" playing and you cant blame a load of unsuccessful canadian indie musicians for all wanting to try and get on the vid.

Is this the video for Cause = Time? Strange video it is.

There can never be too many guitarists live or on a recording, provided they are all playing the same power chord. I learned that from listening to Glenn Branca.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Eugh.

AFAIK they have 50 million people involved in making the records. Different people enter the recording process at different times and just add what they think to different parts and songs. IMO this is a very interesting way of recording, a lot of it is improvised ideas too. You would surely need someone in charge, or overlooking the whole thing though?

I've seen them live and read a couple of reviews, it seems they sometimes go out with 5 people, sometimes with 10.

Some nice songs, not essential listening, I also *love* some of the effects and sounds they get with their guitars. Nicely recorded too.

circle jerk

that being said, it is interesting that on the record there is little guitar masturbation.

Is that video for the cause supposed to be a parody of the sigur ros video?

Either way it sucks.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, this is a really good question

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It's easier to be confident in your poor abilities when you're part of a large group?

lisafrank! (deangulberry), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me take this opportunity to point out that one of the members of Broken Social Scene also has another project, Raising the Fawn, which I much prefer overall. And they only have three main members, 4 or 5 on some tracks in the studio. Check out the new album The North Sea.

I DO like that song, though
