Starts today and continues until 30 April.

I'm probably going to the concerts on Sunday 18th, Tuesday 20th and Saturday 24th (possibly all three!). Maybe some of the workshops too.

Was going to go to some of it, need to review financial situation, 26th ("Electro-acoustic Berio") is the obvious one for me to go to and just £3 too! "Laborintus II" and Arditti Quartet look good too.

Will almost certainly be there on the 18th for the arditti quartet, the sequenzas on the 24th, and as long as I'm not too busy the electroacoustic concert on the 26th will be a certainty.

maybe a couple of others.

OK I shall look for you near the QEH bar around 7.30 on Sunday. Are you still bearded?

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn it, doubt I can make this

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh shame.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Rushed down in my lunchbreak, sold out, Julio will report back on it no doubt

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 26 April 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sold out? (well it seemed to be but i think they could've squeezed a few more ppl in there) funny because I accidentally (since I'd never been to the royal academy before) found my way from the fire exit. I asked the woman fiddling with some piece of gear whether this was where the concert was taking place. she said yes.

where do I pay for it?

she smiled and said 'oh I don't know' *sshhh*

so i sat down and paid nothing.

anyway: three pieces, the second was centered around some nice tones but I found myself not caring after a couple of minutes. Then 'visage' combined instrumentals fragments, electronic tones and vocal manipulations from a reading of Joyce's text (which you couldn't tell that it was joyce or a text, lots of wordless vocals but it did give the piece the edge that the others were lacking).

The first piece was very good, centered around the voice (joyce again), and the gradual loss of its shape but sorta felt like a rehearsal for 'visage'.

The other two pieces were postgrads doing their stuff: the tones are much more attuned to the accoustics of that particurlar hall, and there were visuals to look at (the first one I just couldn't figure out how the visuals matched the music) but soundwise was too much like the second berio piece, nothing special.

"Visage" is the only one I know/ own. Still it got me out in the sun over lunchtime.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ofanim was stunningly good last Saturday. Laborintus 2 was OK but the performance was a bit stiff and serious - the jazz section was completely played down.

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone go to the documentary on 'sinfonia'?

(Jon L), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

nah. work and all that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah. work.

but you're going to the performance itself tomorrow, right?

I don't know the other pieces on the bill but 'sinfonia' is the landmark, by a long shot. it is incredible fun.

(Jon L), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yes I'll try to go.
