Song ID: not much to go on, sorry

While walking around my local Matalan store yesterday, I heard a rather good record being played over the PA - it must have been good as my wife even noted that it was good. It sounded like it wanted to be a late 60s / early 70s Motown song, but the sound quality made it sound like it was a recent recreation of that sort of thing. The only lines I can remember are from what appeared to be the chorus which went "Could you come on, Lady Day? Could you come on, John Coltrane?" then something about double trouble. I've done a Google search on what I can remember from the words to no avail, so ILM is my only hope.

(Expects it to be something really embarrassing)

Lady Day and John Coltarne- Gil Scott Heron?

Though I believe there's a few covers.

It sounds like it should be Tribute (Right on) by the Pasadenas. But I can't confirm it...

Ever feel kinda of down and out and don't know just what to do?
Livin' all of days in darkness, let the sun shine through
Ever fell that somehow, somewhere you lost your way?
And if you don't get help you won't make it through the day
You could call on Lady Day!
You could call on John Coltrane!

They'll wash your troubles, your troubles away

Plastic people with plastic minds on their way to plastic homes
There's no beginning, there ain't no ending
just on and on and on and on and...
It's all because we're so afraid to say that we're alone
until our hero rides in, rides in on his saxophone
You could call on Lady Day!
You could call on John Coltrane!

They'll wash your troubles, your troubles away

The first line of the second verse is surely why its suitable for Matalan. No disrespect intended Rob M.

None taken Nik! Rest assured it wasn't me buying anything from Matalan, my wife bought something for her mother. Looking at the lyrics, that is definitely the right song. I shall have to investigate further. Thanks to all those who found the song - much obliged.

I must admit to being shocked that such frankly cool music was being played in such a shite shop - it was sandwiched between "Time is tight" and an Atomic Kitten number. I doubt if many people will be able to say "Well, I was turned onto Gil Scott-Heron in Matalan..."

Pardon my ignorance, but what sort've shop is this Matalan?
