Absurdity of idea aside- who comes close to filling the shoes?

Carl Crack, Thursday, 15 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Moodymann?

sexyDancer, Thursday, 15 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 15 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ol' Dirty Bastard owns this thread.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as cocaine genius goes, nv OTM.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

D'Angelo is an acceptable substitute.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

D'Angelo is pretty close, he's got the powerful voice, the great songwriting & arranging skillz, he doesn't have quite that flashy of a wardrobe, leads a huge ol' band. Slap a rainbow fringe too-tight jacket on him and shove 12 grams of coke up his nose and fuckin' a I am everyday people.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah and he hasn't put out a record in what, 5 years? Very Sly.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Gillespie.

Except his drugged-out, disillusioned phase was way better than Sly's.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ill throw myself to the slaughter.

andre3000.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll throw myself to an uglier slaughter and say Ian Svenonius- sure, he's got no nasal credentials, but he gets the major 'fro points and he's always on target for STICKING IT TO THE MAN.

Carl Crack, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Would a new Sly need to be a muso?

sexyDancer, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby G.'s an interesting choice, too, but I'm thinking ODB is throwing KO's thus far...

Carl Crack, Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

how about ce-lo green?

bbb, Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Gillespie.
Except his drugged-out, disillusioned phase was way better than Sly's.

It's good to know that jokes are alive and well on ILM.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I assumed it was Bobby himself who posted that comment.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm thinking cody chesnuTT, though it's still early ... the crazy usage of capital letters has got to be worth something

Gregory T (tubesocks), Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Andre 3000?

..., Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Threadkiller: Lenny Kravitz

x-post ODB,

You're comparing a sly, multi-talented, energetically brilliant
bandleader, to ODB, an entertaining but dismal one-man circus
sideshow?

Fie.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'll agree with ODB and squirrel you're being too harsh to Jesus.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 April 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

If all goes according to plan, I will.

The Zutons

atheistgauze, Friday, 16 April 2004 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

I was comparing a sly, multi-talented, energetically brilliant bandleader to Sly Stone. Seems fair.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sly & Bobby may both have sung about how "everybody is a star," but were both referencing Aleister Crowley?

sexyDancer, Friday, 16 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Brown

Etienne (Etienne), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Gillespie? Possibly the funniest thing I've ever read on ILM! Surely Ol' Bob must have posted this himself?!!?!??!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

why not?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not? Because he's a talentless fuck, that's why not.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It most likely is Andre 3000 really, if it's anyone

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Cee-Lo is a distinctly more apt Sly-comparison than Andre. What the both of them share in the nu-Sly-ness = songwriter/performers with insane wardrobes. Cee-Lo's songs have WAAAAAAAY more of that everyday peopleness, that you can make it if you tryitude than Andre's, his singing voice is faaaar more powerful & gospeldelicized than Andre's, he's done the enigmatic bandleader role (with Goodie Mob) whereas Andre has been in more of a partnership (see: Sterling Clover's extremely apt Outkast-Velvet Underground comparisons). Plus, Andre is a teetotaler, which Sly most definitely was NOT. Now it's up to Cee-Lo to disappear into seclusion to seal the deal (PLEASE DON'T DO IT LO! WE NEEDS YA!).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell me some Cee-Lo shit to get Nick

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, but who is the new Sly StALLone?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Richard Grieco for that matter...
