Appliance - "Throwing a Curve Ball" - used in what movie?

Am listening to this disc now and I KNOW I've heard this track in a recent movie. Checked AllMusic and the band's site, but no mention of its use in a soundtrack. It has a "establishing tension / thief on a dangerous heist" kind of vibe, and the movie it was in is *just* outside my memory. Aggravating. Hay-yulp!

one year passes...

Or not.

Reviving this, the only Appliance thread on here, to say that this arrived in the mail for me today, to quote the promo note from RROOPP:

--

‘Re-conditioned’, an epic 44 track compilation of Peel Sessions, B-sides and early EPs by Appliance will be released worldwide on 25 October, the band’s first release since 2003’s ‘Are You Earthed’ album?

The album brings together many of the band’s best moments in one package. CD1 features the four Peel Sessions that were recorded at the BBC Maida Vale studios between 1998 and 2002. This complete set of sessions includes a hypnotic early version of ‘Food Music’, which featured in John Peel’s ‘Festive 50’ in 1999, as well as a previously unreleased track, ‘Electra’.

CD 2 compiles unpolished and unheard demos, B-sides, and other rarities spanning the six years of the band, from low-fi beginnings to multi-layered productions. And CD3 assembles the band’s critically acclaimed three EP’s – two of which are available on CD for the first time – originally released before signing to Mute Records in 1999.

ehh, i was pretty into the first handful of singles/EPs but i really do think most of what followed was pretty weak.

if the price is right the comp of the first 3 EPs would justify the purchase

hey, this is nothing but boss news. admittedly haven't de-shelved any Appliance in a couple o' years, but the first singles and the first half of their Mute period (perhaps through Six Modular Pieces, which was only partially successful) are minor classics. spin "Aeroplane" or "Number Three Channel Is Clear" and make me wrong.

and that besides, RROOPP's Yellow6 and Amp retrospectives are tops in both presentation and comprehesive-ness-osity. v.glad to see they're still a going concern!

any possibility you could post the tracklist, Ned?

Yeah both the other RROOPP comps are pretty great when it comes to detail, this appears to follow in the same vein. Good liner notes and essays as well.

right on, thanks! really looking forward to this one - disc three is the kinda thing i had pined for awhile back (and think even emailed the band about..they replied basically "yeah whatever someday maybe - just buy the damn vinyl, fuckbag cheapskate"). and now, i'm re-hankering...off to revisit Manual and previous, yo!

(I Just) Died In Your Asshat Tonight, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

On the one hand, given the number of thrills-free krautish instrumental rock snooze I've seen lately, maybe these guys were before their time

On the other, pretty surprised that anyone really remembers them fondly enough to want a 3-disc retrospective, but seems Asshat Tonight did, and apparently I haven't heard those 3 EPs - got on the bus for the Earworm 7", found diminishing returns for a few releases after that, got off the bus - so maybe I will eat my words if I hear this

Sorry, guess it's rude to wander into a thread about a not particularly huge band and be less than glowingly positive, haven't had my caffeine yet this morning. Very interested in the AMP and yellow6 reissues though

I admit I always appreciated them more than loved them but I did like how they helped give a refreshed identity to Mute in the late nineties pre-EMI sale. If anyone was going to sign them to something bigger it was going to be Daniel Miller. And hey, I did end up with all the albums.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

I liked their first album a lot, I remember being disappointed by Are You Earthed, but it's been a *loooong* time since I've played their stuff. At the time I thought they were going to be like the more strictly krautrock Spacemen 3, which didn't quite happen. Glad to have my memory jogged, and I'll be checking out the compilation if it hits Rhapsody. Not sure I'd pay a lot to hear it...

two years pass...

Was Land Observations' Roman Roads any good? (James Brooks solo).
