this is probably my most anticipated of all year, even more than flip. supposed to be a double album and going back to old timey style. he's not going to talk about revolution or girls anymore i guess. i read something about how starting in the next few weeks he's going to debut a new song per week on funk flex's show. so we'll be hearing songs soon! speculate on whether it will be good or not.

ww, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait! It will be hard for him to top God's Son though, that's his best cd so far i reckon.

scg, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man i am excited for this, against all odds

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

every day i go to work and i see the little notice on the upcoming releaases bord and i get all giggly

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't even know the release date! how long do we have to wait?

ww, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

oh let me look it up for you!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, the website doesnt say. i will check tomorrow at work.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll speculate classic. anyone know who's supposed to handle production?

s>c>, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope every song sounds like Last Real Nigga Alive!!

scg, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm excited for this too, i love god's son!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone heard "street hop?" i think that it might be the first one from flex. i think.

s>c>, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to say something in my original post like 'i hope there arent a dozen last real nigga alives.'

i heard large professor, alchemist, dr dre, and some others i forget. scarface is supposed to be the only guest! other than the bravehearts, i assume

ww, Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"last real nigga" was cool, more for the information/backstory aspect than anything else. I would hate to have a full album of it though.

s>c>, Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i've seen the title as STREET'S DISCIPLE: NASIR OF NAZARETH too.

ww, Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

omg

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, you know why you can't find a street date? Cause Nas is stuck! He's only halfway through with the album, I heard, even though it was originally supposed to come out very soon.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently, he and Kelis have moved to Atlanta. Now Lil' Jon produced a track or two on the Bravehearts album so who knows what direction this albums is going to take...

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

he's staking out the week of the 4th of July as his release date now that 50 Cent's pushed his album back off that date.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Nas is a disciple of Mike Skinner?

Jole, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait! It will be hard for him to top God's Son though, that's his best cd so far i reckon.

wtf...

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee you don't have much of a learning curve do you?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't follow. (so no...)

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Did ILM ever coin a word for a hip hop rockist?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean you are STILL shocked that people are praising recent Nas and not genuflecting all over Illmatic (or whatever 2nd golden age classic you are shocked that more people aren't repping for.) How many times can you be baffled by this, man? Doesn't the surprise wear off after a while? ;)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Other than the obvious ILLMATIC!? question, I'd also hesitate to find worth in much of Nas' recent material, including God's Son. "Made U Look" and "Get Down" = wonderful songs. But the rest of the album...ugh.

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pete Rockist, Dan.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck the "2nd golden age," lets talk about how God's Son is a pretty mediocre album.

PS: What have I said that is hip hopist/rockist/whatever!?

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, being surprised that someone likes God's Son better than Illmatic is hardly unbelievable.

I'm not someone who thinks hip hop has sucked ever since 1994, so I don't see how you can label me as worshipping the golden age. Certainly I think 1993-4 was a peak period for creativity, but that hasn't kept me from appreciating crunk, Dizzee/Wiley, old school, etc. in any way shape or form.

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay whatever I am just making this shit up. You've never expressed shock over ILM's preference for recent hip-hop over older stuff. Happy?

BTW can I just say how clever "Pete Rockist" was? I hope no one else thought of that first (it's not coming up in any google searches so maybe not.) Heh.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

there isn't much i don't like on god's son. zone out, mastermind, and the cross only because of the terrible beat. the rest is some of his best.

ww, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"They're okay but I much prefer their first album"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

You've never expressed shock over ILM's preference for recent hip-hop over older stuff. Happy?

Haha I know yr being sarcastic but you are actually right here.

I HAVE, however, expressed shock that ILM has absolutely no interest in early 90s-era hip-hop.

Preference of current stuff has nothing to do w/ it...I LOVE current mainstream and underground hip hop!

"They're okay but I much prefer their first album"

Jesus christ...if its a better album its a better album.

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(IMO obviously)

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to make a thread about nastradamus today but i can't now because i would look opportunistic.

ww, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankly I am baffled why you would think that none of us like early-90s hip hop.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

wahaa, I googled "rockist" and found DJDee discussing rockism in hip hop on another forum a couple weeks ago. What are the odds!?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, I think me and Sterling may have been accusing him of being a rockist a couple of weeks ago. Still I don't know why he would have been discussing it somewhere else.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You know we're just giving you a hard time Dee. I know I love Illmatic and I'm sure almost everyone else here does too.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously d they all love ditc and gravediggaz and like grouphome, all that stuff

ww, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I don't love Group Home. Ack. The other two are aces though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankly I am baffled why you would think that none of us like early-90s hip hop.

Obv. many people here do...I am recalling this thread, in which many ILMers seemed ignorant of music that I love.

Alex in SF, you like to give me shit, no?

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

djdee i don't think people are accusing you of shitting on recent rap from some high horse espousal of early 90s rap. you like "rubber band man" and madvillain, no big deal. it's just glib incredulity which is generally tired and esp. so if it's packed with the expectation that everybody should be aligned with more-tired canonizations.

scissors (Honda), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha look Chuck Eddy's taste are not representative of ILM (or anywhere else in the known universe.)

And I do like to give you shit, dee. You get so pissy and impassioned. It's very cute. But I've heard and love a lot of the records you rep on that thread.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not trying to force people to accept a canon or something! My "wtf" was more the suggestion that God's Son was that great of an album (I'd take "It Was Written" and maybe even "I Am.." above it, never mind Illmatic.)

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"They're okay but I much prefer their first album"
-- Dan I. (w1nt3rmut...), April 16th, 2004.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And I donno if it was just chuck...Scott Seward too.

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah no one argues about the relative worth of an artist's albums on ILM.

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

do you think street's disciple is going to be good d?

ww, Friday, 16 April 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Scott is SAYING that he loves 87-90 hip hop and he just hasn't heard much stuff from 91-95! He wasn't dismissing it, he's ACTUALLY wondering how he managed to miss it. Either way two people doesn't = ILM totally dismissing 93-97 hip hop.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 April 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

See, but (and here's my not-Pete Rockism cropping up) that Pete Rock and Large Pro have both been surpassed, their time is over, they haven't really added much to the hip-hop game in years. (Primo's still bangin them out of course).

djdee2005, Friday, 16 April 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the sample in thief's theme? it's something really obvious isn't it? understandable smooth shit that murderers move with!

Sunshine of yr Love

djdee2005, Friday, 23 April 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not "Sunshine of Your Love", it's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". those are kind of similiar riffs, though, so I can understand that mistake.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 24 April 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

but can you forgive it?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that's something djdee and I will just have to talk out in private.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

To discuss Pete Rock further, I think Petestrumentals and the Soul Survivor albums both have great beats (tho the rapping on Survivor sucks, sadly). He hasn't changed the game in a while or anything, but he's still making nice beats that I like to listen to. And what the hell is wrong with that?

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1486851/20040506/nas.jhtml?headlines=true

so now Street's Disciple is dropping in September as a single disc. sounds like a good idea to me, but then I think that probably every artist should go into an album shooting for a double, and then whittle it down to a single.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

since I'veh eard so much about Illmatic, I'll probably have to get it eventually. I just now got into the wu-tang clan, so with some artists I am behind the times...

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What an odd cover.

Thief's Theme had a really cool video that made me like the song more.

How does "Bridging the Gap" fit into ppl's anticipation for the album I wonder?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i love olu dara as a solo artist, but it sounds a bit gimmicky with nas rapping over a (slightly corny) blues riff on the song. still, i like it.

havent got my hopes up for the album though, dont think nas can reign himself in for a double album. i think it just means more space for the usual filler he loves.

DVD (dickvandyke), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

upthread al said it was gonna be a single CD - has this changed again?

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, i didnt know that.

DVD (dickvandyke), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

All the hip-hop ppl left...

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

first it was gonna be a double cd out in July, then he pushed it back and said it was gonna be a single cd, then it got pushed back a little more and last i heard it was a double again, but i'm honestly not even sure at this point. dk prolly knows.

the title track is my favorite of the stuff I've heard so far. i'm not the biggest Nas fan but i'm pretty excited about it. "Bridging the Gap" is kinda neat in the "I Can" edutainment style.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

great cover!!

i hope it's a single cd

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

im not expecting this to be great. nas has gotten better since and including the craply-titled stillmatic, but why am i expecting this to be another hodge podge? fingers crossed it wont be, of course, but more street bangers, less tupac collabos please.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

so has this leaked onto slsk yet,or just a few tracks?
ive heard the olu dara track, its a good laugh

robin (robin), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i love bridging the gap, especially that accelerating beat that leads from the chorus into the verses.

Sympatico (shmuel), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the current release date for this?

6/7 December.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 25 October 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
http://www.sonymusic.co.uk/uk/disc.php?id=12519?=eng&cat=517724

snippets can be heard there. beats are mostly utter shit.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

http://governmentnames.blogspot.com/2004/11/nas-u.html
So um this is like the greatest thing ever.
He makes what would be an annoying lecture from those old "Nation of Millions is the best album ever" heads sound thrilling and interesting in a way most rapppers cant. The old school isn't washed in brown, it was a time where everything was on edge!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to say how great the cover posted about looks. Wow. Too bad this album is probably gonna suck though :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

did you listen to the song?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Not yet. At work.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That track is sorta weird, particularly the last few bars. It seems sort of pointless. The beat is so-so.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The beat is awesome, it sounds like the drum cuts at the end of Rakim's "Microphone Fiend" as if being heard from outside club doors. (Credit for half of that sentence goes to dlk)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the strange dedication to Rakim? He's not dead, and it doesn't really make him out to be a great hero in the song either. I'm baffled by this track.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

huh?

at sixteen son was watching him
mesmerized, respect, not jocking him
was so amazing, besides
he came onstage with lasers in his eyes
walk with me now, unauthorized biography of rakim

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why he'd have to be dead to do a tribute to him.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

For dramatic reasons.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

at sixteen son was watching him
mesmerized, respect, not jocking him
was so amazing, besides

Ok, well, it still strikes me as an odd track nonetheless. And is he really gonna do one for KRS-One too?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

He's rocking Atomic Dog!

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

there are some good tracks on this album, notably the rakim one but on the whole this is awful and horrible disappointment. i love nas but most of these beats are terrible and totally corny. a real shame.

adam west (adamwest), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard a couple songs but so far I haven't been disappointed at all - "American Way," "Thief's Theme," "Nazareth Savage," and of course this track are all great...

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ironically enough, Nas sounds like he's imitating Talib Kweli's flow on "The Makings of the Perfect Bitch."

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
So, it's out, any thoughts? I just bought it, at the first listen it sounds quite good. I love it when Nas gets emotional (instead of getting thuggish), and on this record he's emotional a lot. The beats are mostly good too, quite different from what's going on in the mainstream right now. I think Salaam Remi is very underappreciated as a producer, he does a great job here.

According to Rapreviews that weird female rapper "Scarlett" that's on two tracks might be Nas himself with his voice masked... Does anyone know if this is true, sounds pretty weird.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

As usual, it would have made for a much better single disc.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's weird, both discs are only about 45 minutes, so if Nas would've cut out a few tracks, it would've made for a very very good 70-minute disc.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

we talked about it a lot here already:

i want to thank nas for another shitty album

and yeah, the 'female' voice on "Sekou Story" and "Live Now" is definitely just Nas pitched up. she/he even re-uses that "cause I'm my owwwwn master" bit from "Bridging the Gap". so far I really like the album. there aren't many glaring weak/dull parts and I think he actually benefits from being able to stretch out and establish a mood over the course of that many songs. most of his albums are too short anyway.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the first half of the first disk, and the first half of the second, are really good. kelis' "that's the american way" chorus doesn't really work. The track with his dad becomes annoying quick. there are a few r'nb tracks towards the end of disk 1 that don't achieve much. but overall, really good.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

My favorite part of this album is on the song "Street's Disciple", where Olu Dara comes on in the chorus and intones "...disciple of the projects!", thereby implying his own deficiencies in providing for his young son.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 01:53 (thirteen years ago)

come on, man

Smif-N-Westurns (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 02:00 (thirteen years ago)

i mean, it's a pretty good track anyway. it sounds like it tried to copy the feel of "Reunited" by Wu-Tang.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 02:10 (thirteen years ago)
