Simple, really--I just need you to answer this question with the first answer that comes to your mind. Don't think about it, just give the first thing you think of. Also, be sure not to read anyone else's response for you give your own, since that will render your answer useless. I'll try to leave enough space between this intro and my question so that no one else's answers appear at the top of the page. And obviously, if you already saw this question in the Sound Opinions forums, please don't answer.

Name a band that is a famous one-hit-wonder.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, shit, the large space didn't show up--probably precautionary measures against scrollers. I'll just have to post a bunch of times to cover the space.

It may be in Stockolm, Cindy. I hadn't heard of another hit by the Standells in this area, but Dr. Hook had:

Please Mrs. Avery
Cover of the Rolling Stone
Sharing the Night Together
and probably others... In the US.

I thought of Black Lace first. But then I decided they probably had two hits. The same thing happened with Musical Youth.

My third thought was Beats International.

blame it on the bassline!

(but i don't think it matters, pace my previous comments, whether or not our nominees really were one hit wonders or not. i get the impression from the question that your personal perception is what matters here. potential here for a whole series of future threads, actually!)

webcrack (music=crack), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead.
-- chuck

hee hee. and that one raises the basic question: what exactly IS a one-hit wonder anymore? radiohead are one (is one?) in the u.s. in the classic sense that they've had exactly one top-40 song on the billboard hot 100. but they've also had a top-40 hot 100 sales chart hit with "knives out" and a major rock-radio hit with "karma police." i've owned three editions of joel whitburn's top pop singles book (aka the bible) and each new edition makes my head spin a whole lot more with all those strange little superscripts next to so many chart numbers. i yearn for the pre-superscript days. but, in this superscript age, what makes a hit a hit?

also, though i already logged my answer to this question above, i can't help but add that the band that popped into my head immediately after seeing chuck's answer was:

the flaming lips (a pure one-hit wonder, with new superscripts in the whitman book!)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh. i meant no superscripts! thus, they are pure.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

King Harvest sang "Dancing in the Moonlight" even though everyone in the entire world, including the members of King Harvest, think that Thin Lizzy did it.

I'd also make mention of Sophie B. Hawkins in this thread, but I don't wanna get sued for twenty bucks either.
