Oh, if it hadn't been for the Pixies we would have had no Nirvana, Blur, Stump, Outkast and even for sure no Franz Ferdinand...

I don't buy this at all.

This is actually not a pop at the Pixies, but surely an Idea who's time has come, manifests itself in a number of places and ways.

In the same way "I'm Stranded" and "Blitzkrieg Bop" happened without reference to each other...

stump?!?!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(you're throwing yourself off the scent there)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh when will someone release 'Quirk Out' on CD?

mzui, Friday, 16 April 2004 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you SEEN the price of "Fierce Pancake" on CD, on Gemm?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrrrrrr......

On a more pleasing note, I've since found out that my Blue Plastic CD copy of Julian Cope's Jehovakill is worth upwards of £70. Nice!

I'd give anything to hear Bit-Part Actor in digital quality..

"If it were not for X, there would be no Y" is faulty and flawed logic when it comes to cultural events, due to external events. If it had not been X, it would have been someone else filling the cultural vacuum that produced Y.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Stump emerged about the same time as the Pixies?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Stump maybe just had the edge, in terms of their being written about in the papers for the first time etc: When they *formed* is anybody's guess.

mzui, Friday, 16 April 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ignore the Stump ref. I was being faceit)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

stump may even have been pre-pixies

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Your mistake mark was being too clever for the likes of us - remember who you're dealing with here!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When I see a picture of Franz Ferdinand I get all irrational and 'Paul Calf', am I alone in this malady?

mzui, Friday, 16 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Stump - Formed 1982/83 First release 'Mud On A Colon' e.p. 1986.
Pixies - Boston 1986

mzui, Friday, 16 April 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm wish I'd said "Beatles" instead now...

Taking sides : Heavy Irony vs Light Irony

(I actually don't mind discussing Stump though. I have a virtually unplayed Fierce Pancake LP taped on my minidisc in front of me. And I used "Charlton Heston" in a show I put together with/for a dance show in/for a turkish nightclub. But that's another story)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i try not to look at pictures of franz ferdinand lest it makes me hate them

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Light Irony for me every time.
Heavy Irony = U2 standing in front of banks of TV screens with burning crucifixes.

mzui, Friday, 16 April 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Does the fish have chips?"

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Light Irony = mentioning Stumpin this thread title.
Heavy Ironing = mentioning Beatles in this thread title.

Sorry to be a retread, but what exact idea were the Pixies a manifestation of?

Rappist Monk (NickB), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Quiet verse with prominent bass line/ Loud chorus with lots of yelling

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I think a lot of this stems from numerous Cobain interviews where he admits almost holding back "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as a single, which, of course, could very well have kept Nirvana from mass success. He apparently felt "SLTS" sounded too much like the Pixies, and was crippled by indie guilt. Or something.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Same reason he didn't want "Come as You are" a single. He knew he was ripping off someone.

But let's face it; if we didn't have the musice we had ten years ago, we wouldn't have the music today.

Aja (aja), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

my Blue Plastic CD copy of Julian Cope's Jehovakill is worth upwards of £70.

WHAT TEH FUKC?????? I've got that one!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i do like how no one has expressed any shock over the "outkast" in this thread title

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I never even noticed it, to be honest. I only looked at the thread b/c it said "stump"!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

how do I get off the bus?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious as to how Franz Ferdinand is thought to sound like the Pixies.

Tim Ellison, Friday, 16 April 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No, without the Pixies, he wouldn't have decided to become a musician. (Well, that's what is thought.)

Aja (aja), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is "he?"

Tim Ellison, Friday, 16 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Franz Ferdinand

too bad we aren't talking about Franz Stahl. : (

Aja (aja), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of don't see the word 'Outkast' on ILM anymore.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole thread was started bcause of the goodol' NME basically celebrating 10 years of Nirvana crying.

The "Franz Ferdinand" was their inclusion, not mine.
