Let's get the ball rolling!

From COF:

The album is currently being planned for release on June 22nd or 29th in North America.

The video for the new single is being directed by Floria Sigismondi. She has worked with Incubus, Christina Aguilera and Sigur Ros, but also did 'Obstacle 1' for Interpol. Check out her website for full credits.

Curefest looks to be kicking off on July 24th in Miami, Florida. Main stage lineup is The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai

Holy shit.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't be sad, coz three out of four ain't bad.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if this line-up will also do the European leg.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that like "Do the Hansa" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That distant thump you heard was the sound of my heart shooting out of the top of my head.

Ow.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

They're gonna play the new single on the Tonight Show at the end of the month..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mind you, having seen The Cure at a 200-capacity venue recently, of course I'm not really all that excited by this...*ducks*

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, wait, main stage lineup? There's going to be a second stage too? Huh. Well, something to escape to when InterYawn comes on...

As for you, Charlie, yeah yeah yeah YOU'LL GET YOURS.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Envy is my radar.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

okay for real I'm following this tour.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Cure has set a June 22 release date for their 13th album, which is still untitled. The set is due via Ross Robinson's I Am imprint. Meanwhile, The Cure has some American appearances booked in advance of the album's release. They will perform on April 30 on The Tonight Show and then headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on May 2. Also, The Cure will play WHFS/Washington DC's HFStival on May 22 with P.O.D., The Offspring and Jay-Z, amongst others. Billboard.com reports that a full North American tour may run from late July to September, but that is still being finalized."

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-Z at the HFStival! Surely this means ILM has won.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I may be repeating myself, but may I gently remind you that they will play their new single on Jay Leno in ONE WEEK!!!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

AAAAAAAIGH I WILL BE SCHMOOZING AT A POST-PERFORMANCE PART (oh wait I have a VCR YAY)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

do we know what the name of it is yet? Also I guess this is being released on the ArtistDirect label?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's called "Please Join The Cure (Dan Perry)".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

with 'Just Say Yes (VengaDan)" remix on the b-side..

This is distributed by Geffen, no title yet, as far as I know. Ooooh, the excitement!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I just found this on COF "New Album - The Cure signed a 3 record deal with I Am Recordings/Artistdirect. Artistdirect went bankrupt though, so The Cure have terminated their contract and have now signed with Geffen. The album will be released on June 21st in Europe and June 22nd in the US & Canada."

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan is suffering from wishful thinking, as the single is CLEARLY called "That Ned Fan of Ours (Is An All Right Guy)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got it on good authority the new single is "Why the fuck? (are you all so excited)"

___ (___), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, you didn't write the new single!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, hold on a second, I think the new single is actually called "Fuck off".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be really excited about The Cure if they let Tolhurst back in the band (on synth, not drums!) and returned to the great psychedelic pop style that they were so good at during the mid 80s.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gier - isn't that like saying that Christmas would be exciting if you hadn't found out Santa didn't exist?

And therefore - not at all exciting?

___ (___), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

From PFork:

Though fans are concerned that Robinson's harder-edged style could detract from or overdigitze the band's trademark atmospherics, The Cure's decision to hire Robinson marks a step up from their previous two albums, which were produced by longtime engineers Paul Corkett (Bloodflowers and Steve Lyon (Wild Mood Swings)-- neither of which had much experience under their belt as full-fledged producers: Corkett had previously only produced for Suede and Placebo, while Lyon had only one production credit, for The Creatures.

So what do we think of this? Overdigitize the band's atmospherics??

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, if there's one thing I'm concerned about, it's the overdigitization of atmospherics.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I fear the digital crosstalk on the amp waves.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no time to fear. I'm too busy excitedly whispering "nyom nyom nyom" to myself.

Over and over again.

Muppet Boy, Friday, 23 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
So what are the odds that the album cover will be as awful as for Bloodflowers?
They really did lose the plot graphically/aesthetically since Porl/Patched Art left the ship.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

uh-hoh...

From COF: "have you seen the album art yet? it's awesome, it's a crayon/water color drawing by a little kid maybe 3 or 4 years old. it looks like something that would be hanging in a kindergarten class on white lined paper, it has 4 figures (all totally different sizes and styles) on it and the heart with an eye and wings. The Cure dips across the top in black with a yellow star around the "C". Then under that is the cure written again in red marker.

I'm guessing the middle figure (which is the biggest and mostly black with scarlet alien type eyes) is Robert, with stick arms and legs."

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 17 May 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all for that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, crew, are you ready for this?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh. I like it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: The Cure vs Basement Jaxx

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
And now... the lyrics!
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ChainofFlowers/thecurelyrics.html

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert's frenzied lyrical recycling continues at speed!

"The Promise" looks somewhat rubbish in written form, but the Coachella bootlegs atest to its greatness. Hopefully the rest will follow suit.

Muppet Boy, Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

why hasn't this leaked yet!!!!????!?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they hate you. (They hate me too, sob.)

The last time a high profile album didn't leak almost up to the release date was Tool's Lateralus -- I think it only emerged two or three days beforehand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, this is getting strange.
As strange as the fact that the official website doesnt even mention that a new album is coming out in 3 weeks..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

so who will see them this summer? i will be at the nyc and boston shows in july/august. BOTH on SATURDAY nights !

kephm, Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

When are they playing LA?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

August 27, with more dates possible.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

argh, i'll be gone by then..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm planning on the seeing the Nashville stop, but I have to strategically time my arrival in order to completely miss Mogwai.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've come to the conclusion that the new single is one of their best post-80s single, only rivalled by 'The 13th' and 'Never Enough'.
Insanely catchy driving music for a sunny day

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

do cure fans ever forget what robert smith looks like?

http://www.gulfcoastvillas.com/thecure/gallery/robert/robert1.jpg

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

if only he still looked like that

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Naming songs after keyboard commands C/D?

Dud.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmh not sure about 'Us or Them'...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right, this is exactly the In Your House melody.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

with the lyrics of Play For Today...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i will just wait for the album, as i always do, still not too worked up over it.

kephm, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

drums on never = drums on hanging garden

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Never is great. Love the breaks with the claps

There's something about the vocals, really reminiscent of his 80s singing style.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay 20 seconds in and I AM IN LOVE.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

"Lost" is seriously one of the best songs they've EVER RECORDED!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Judging from "Labyrinth" and "End Of The World", I think my big complaint about this album is going to be about how the instrumental music is muted compared tot he vocals.

That aside, WOW. It's like _Wild Mood Swings_ never happened (so far).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(BTW Either exposure has mellowed me to "The End Of The World" or it does actually make sense in the context of the album. Also I think my mixing fears are due to the audio stream.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I have serious fears about the mix but will wait until I hear the real deal to judge.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll patiently wait to have the crispy-creamy CD in my hands.

Same here. At this point it's like opening up the Xmas present a couple of days early. I R patient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

VH1 can eat a bag of greasy dicks for their suckass buggy Media Player embed. (Although on the plus side I've now listened to "Lost" about five times and IT IS FUCKING GENIUS.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GOD The clarity on the MTV site is about 8 bajillion times better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm halfway done downloading it!!!!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I got it, hit me up!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

in 320!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-hoh, it seems that Curiosa is in trouble...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What have you heard?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not much, DeRogatis hinting that Curiosa could be having the same problems as Lollapalooza: http://www.suntimes.com/output/entertainment/cst-ftr-lolla23.html

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

OH NO

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So that means the Cure just shrug and redo things with an only-them tour later leading to 3 hour sets HURRAH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet sweet Lordy Lord. I am now the proud owner of The Cure!!!!!!!!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice. Which of the eight million editions in particular?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Euro De-luxe, sir. I couldn't be bothered waiting for the Hong Kong super-enhanced version. I'll just complete it with the single(s)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The folks at Ideal Copy are selling the Japanese starting on Monday, I'm going for that one, 14 tracks. Does the HK one have even more, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Clear Channel's Gelman agreed with this dire prognosis. "Whether it's the $3 gallons of gas or the tired artists or the bands coming around for the second or third time, it all hit the fan at the same time," he said

haha $3 gallons of gas gets mentioned but not ticket prices.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no no just joking on that one! Hmm maybe I shd have waited. Oh well, whatever.
Nice to see that more money has been spent on the packaging this time around than on BF.

xpost

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no no just joking on that one! Hmm maybe I shd have waited. Oh well, whatever.

Eh, in the age of downloading it doesn't mean all that much I suppose but hey. I just like knowing I have all but one track from the whole thing on the disc!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I know. I'm not really into re-compiling albums with odds and ends on mp3...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

Okay, I know I go through a ridiculous hyperbole phase every time The Cure releases something but SERIOUSLY "Lost" is one of the twenty best tracks they've ever done and possibly one of the ten best.

Imagine a Cure album made up of opening tracks:

10:15 Saturday Night/Jumping Someone Else's Train
A Reflection
The Holy Hour
100 Years
Let's Go To Bed
Shake Dog Shake
Inbetween Days
The Kiss
Plainsong
Open
Want
Out Of This World
Lost

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a recording of the Coachella gig and Lost does indeed sound like a great tune, look forward very much to hearing the album/cd/whatever you call them these days.

mzui, Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine a Cure album made up of opening tracks:

What a HORRIBLE album. I couldn't even imagining creating a CDR of that to listen to or anything!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG AN ENDING TRACK ALBUM!!!!

Three Imaginary Boys
Seventeen Seconds
Faith
Pornography
The Lovecats
The Top
Sinking
Fight
Untitled
End
Bare
Bloodflowers
The Promise/Nothing Left/(insert fave tracklisting here)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Opening track album: "Welcome to my world, it's a bit intoxicating in its own way but I do have my moments."

Ending track album: "OH GOD THE PIT THE YAWNING PIT, DESPAIR AND EMPTINESS STRUGGLE AGAINST THE VOID oh wait dancing cats neat! DOOOOOOOM."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned OTM. I'll give it up for the back-to-my-thirties rage in some of the vocal performances, but, that's about all the blood Ross got. Lots of Bloodfowers rehashes.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

A TRACK FOUR ALBUM!

1. Another Day
2. Accuracy
2. In Your House

= "I'm feeling sorta queasy."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, well......I'm still waiting for the proposed 15 cd box set of all the european radio sourced concerts from the 1980/81 tours.

Oh wait, that's in my head...

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what you think Ned is OTM about, Chris; it seems like you're talking about completely different things.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's talking about my takes on the first/last song albums.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so his second sentence (which seems to be about _The Cure_ itself) has nothing to do with the first one?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

This is where we enter the realms of authorial mystery.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan's opening tracks comp >>>>> closing tracks comp

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW Smith apparently reckons the 12-track version of The Cure is the real one and the others are just annoyingly short or inconveniently padded

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I've listened to it once and half and I have to say that I'm inclined to agree with the 'best album since Disintegration' hype. They managed to come up with something really dynamic and urgent, something that was missing IMO in their last three albums. It's varied but doesn't feel forced like WMS, pretty close in spirit to Head on the Door.
Most fan reviews I'd read so far complained about the poppy middle part, but apart from 'alt.end' these are probably my favorite songs so far (esp. 'I don't know what's going on').
I have a feeling VengaDan is gonna be in rapture over 'Us or Them' which condenses 'Watching Me Fall' into 4 minutes of pure rocking goodness.
And the closer 'Going Nowhere' could possibly be my favorite Cure song since 'Homesick' (to which it is pretty similar).

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

From personal experience, I can say the average Cure fan is pretty annoying - more interested in mirroring his "tortured" inner self in the songs than actually listening to the music.
The new album is good, really, I listened to it twice and I'm pretty satisfied. A couple of songs are genuinely great and most of the remaining ones are good too. As Dan wrote, _Lost_ is just amazing.
Again, I don't think it's possible ask for more to a band with a 25-year long career.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably better to continue this here:
The Cure 'The Cure': Intial thoughts, C/D?
