I publish the banns of deleting a track from a recently imported album, in case it turns out to be a grower

When I'm copying to iTunes a CD that's either new or which I don't know very well, I often think "This song's crap - I think I'll delete it straight away so that it doesn't spoil my random shuffle sessions". But I'm always plagued with doubt. I listen to almost all my music through my Mac these days, so if I say 'no' to a song now, I may never get to hear it again.

So the idea of this thread is for people to post such tracks and for other people to step in and say "NO - DON'T DO IT! IT'S A GROWER!" (and try to convince them why).

So, from Kelis's Kaleidoscope - the final track 'Wouldn't You Agree'.

Should it go? Am I just not in a smooth R&B mood right now? I think it's the Justin Vince bits that are really putting me off.

Doesn't it ever bother you that you don't have the whole album in there?

I lsten to all my music through iTunes and iPod and I worry that any sense of "albums" as a whole is slipping away. But maybe that's just rockism, I don't know.

Also-how exactly does the "shuffle album" function on iPod work?

It kind ot bothers me a bit, but the crappy tracks on random bothers me even more, and I figure I have the original CD there if I want to get all rockist about it.

How do you mean, 'how does it work?'. It just.. does!

i have ALWAYS wondered about that!!! (xp)

I've never got around to trying 'shuffle albums' rather than 'shuffle songs'. Does that play a whole album in order then pick another album at random or does it mean it shuffles tracks within an album? I was talking more about iTunes itself, really. I tend not to use shuffle on the iPod so much, as it wears the battery down more.

half of the mp3's I have are just barely clinging to my hard drive on the premise of being potential growers. I'm too kind to the lot of them.

I totally misread your question, adam! Sorry. I guess I'll try it out when I next charge my iPod.

You should keep "Wouldn't You Agree", it's not amazing but is by no means bad, and it is a grower.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn.

I thought that when you finish one album, it would then cue up another at randow...but it doesn't.

So what does it do?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i never liked "woulndn't you agree" until the last time i listened to it! so, uh no, keep it. i hardly ever delete mp3s.

Did it play the tracks on the album you heard in order, or at random? Did it just stop afterwards or go to the next album, alphabetically?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what was this thread title supposed to be?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It is correct.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(it's a church thing, you wouldn't understand)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, banns, that's right.

it was in spellbound.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It was, but the judge pronounced it unfairly.

Well I'm still hanging onto 'Wouldn't You Agree' for now, but now the fate of seminal art-rock classic The Velvet Underground & Nico hangs in the balance. To be honest, I've never given a stuff about 'European Son' and 'Black Angel's Death Song' and when importing these yesterday, I failed to include them. Can anyone convince me that I should go back and add them?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My (untested and pretty untestable theory) about the shuffle/album thing is that iTunes will use the album column to shuffle instead of the individual song one, the only possible difference being that shuffling by album excludes playing two tracks from a same album in a row.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

'European Son' and 'Black Angel's Death Song' are two of my favourite Velvets songs, fullstop, let alone on that album. Well, not so much Black Angel, but European Son rocks like a truck and besides, has that amazing breaking glass breakdown bit.

But I can understand why one wouldn't like them.

With albums I know and love, skipping tracks seems perfectly alright, cause they've already had the chance to grow or not grow. I've proved to be wrong with growers on a couple of albums I've recently aquired but I'm not saying what they are cause I'll get laughed at.
