As 'research' for reviewing the Keane album, I went to their messageboard. God, I hate people.

look here.

(Kate, you'll love this.)

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

how strange.

i've seen copies of Keane's two pre-Fierce Panda EPs go for fucking stupid money on ebay. their hardcore fans are a curious breed.

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Busted have just noise" - man, if they did, imagine how much Kate would love them?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Busted Play the Jesus and Mary Chain Songbook" - Now there's an album.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i have never heard anything by keane. but descriptions of them make them sound dullsville.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

keane were manufacture (timeless boohooing..) and started off supporting pop idol and fame academy people -- they were the support act for david sneddon, etc. then they got signed and were reshaped in the form of the new coldplay. the majors did a single with fierce panda and then boom! keane have a lot of money running on them -- almost like victoria beckham money-like.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what is this thread about? people liking music and people disliking music?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow is wat Doomie said right? I never knew that. I love keane but love Busted way more, (I have a varied taste in music unlike a lot of those ppl on that board). And Busted will win, obviously.

Grace, Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

grace, it is true.

you love it because keane are like outdoor sculpture. designed by the record company and a and r to be loved by all. inoffensive and bland.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The new single sounds like a cover / as if I've heard it before but I can't put my finger on it. I'm afraid this might mean they have a way with melody.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus if they're really manufactured why did they pick a singer who looks like a fat Danny McNamara who's been beaten up by a cricket team?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i've got a keane demo before they became coldplay-lite. the pressure on them is this: if it does not reach number one, it will be considered a failure.

omg, nick. its just common knowledge.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it is. I'm just intrigued why they picked such an ugly.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

#13 with a bullet.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, im suprised. I thought manufactured bands couldn't be credible?? But Keane are considered to be credible right?

Grace, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, busted are more credible than keane. but really you should just buy an earlies single.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not round here. Credibility is a pejorative anyway these days. And an illusion. Ugly != credible. Credible != good.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Busted formed themselves with a magazine advert, aye.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

keane are toploader. busted maybe crap but they still will keep on going because they believe in the music, maaaaaaaaaaaaan..

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

there are no winners here.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just intrigued why they picked such an ugly.

The kind of people Keane are aimed at are suspicious of gorgeous people, for possibly obvious reasons.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess credibility doesn't really mean to much anyway. I still love Busted even though they're manufactured. I guess I just don't really care about it any more. What sort of people are Keane aimed at then?

Grace, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

our demographic; the malformed, preferably with localised deformity to the cochlea.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'of' the cochlea, biggins, not 'to'.

you're fired.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted aren't 'manufactured' though, that's the point. They write their own material, the two short ones recruited the tall one via an ad in Melody Maker or NME or somewhere indie like that, the tall one has a sideproject that sounds like Biffy Clyro, blah blah blah, "we're a rock band, not a pop band, manufactured pop is rubbish" soundbites.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

No Busted are not manufactured like say hearsay were, and I guess loads of bands that are not considered to be manufactured auditioned for members. It was just the descriptions they give of huge queues of guys lining up to try out for the band that made me figure they were. But all that doesn't bother me,I like the music so I don't see the problem. The tall one is Charlie by the way, its nice you didn't refer to him as 'the one with the eyebrows' which kinda gets on my nerves now!

Grace, Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

When John Squire formed The Seahorses he auditioned dozens and dopzens of singers, drummers and bassists.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, this has cheered me up completely. My brother constantly slags me off for liking busted, but now i can tell him all this and he'll never be able 2 slag them off again!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Im impressed! I spent monthes trying to convince friends that Busted arn't a boyband. I think when I gave up telling everyone that they were different I kinda gave up thinking they were different. Thats a great review. I bookmarked it.

Grace, Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"my bizarre desire for Busted to decide that their career arc from now on will mirror The Beatles in every way"

You know, I've had this exact same fantasy - that Busted will tire of the teen-pop market and become relentlessly experimental, consuming huge amounts of lsd and withdrawing from touring in exchange for artistic integrity... well, I can dream...

Ollie (stickthrower), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I will tell you my story again.

At the beginning of last summer I was forced at jobpoint to take a car journey with an A&R guy from one of the big megagiants of the music industry and a certain guy who'd been on Top of the Pops a bit to go and do something somewhere.

Over the long, long, long, journey we covered many topics, including a hilarious converstation about "music downloading on the net", why exactly Pete Tong was STILL so very vital (I was biting my fist by this point) and upcoming bands. A&R (who was wearing a trucker hat and a t-shirt advertising an 80's toy range, I shit ye not) stuck the Keane demo on the stereo, it was currently the "hottest" thing doing the rounds.

The debate that was raging was wether or not they should be forced to have a guitarist join the band as the mighty brains above were unsure whether Joe and Jenny CommStudies104 would take to them if they didn't have at least some guitars on there. I can't remember what the Hat and the Twat thought exactly as I was too busy singing the bassline to Love Your Money by Daisy Chainsaw over and over in my head in some attempt to keep my sanity. The bands choice of first single had already been discarded in favour of that monstrosity that came out a while ago.

Next up was how they were being promoted. Keane were to play as many Student Balls as possible, although it was important to make sure they were not exclusively Grad balls as what was required was return custom from Joe and Jenny. Yes, they hooked up with David Sneddon's management to do this.

But really. The simple fact is that they're on a promotional arc, as every band is whether big or small. Yes, they're manufactured in the sense that they have come from nowhere to going on a carefully selected promotional plan. But what else do you expect? They signed the big deal so they're getting the big treatment.

There's hate to fire off here, but not at Keane themselves on the grounds of "being manufactured". Pudding faced chumps they may be, aural candyfloss they maybe, but they're just going through what you've got to do if you want your band to be superhuge these days. Don't bother going and gigging, mixing with different bands or doing anything organic and ground level. Your big labels aren't looking there. What they want is a demo that sounds 90% like last years thing, they want you fresh with absolutely no knowledge of how "der biz" works, and they want you, erm, keen.

If you want to direct your hate somewhere then direct it at the process. Then come to the realisation that its YOU, yes that's YOU reading THIS that should do something about it. Now that the Great Indie Label Buyout has run its course and everyone is owned by the same three moneyliths there is absolutely no structure in place for the kind of organic non-manufactured additive-free music of which you seek. There aren't the labels, the venues, the press, the promoters and this has had enough time to settle now that there isn't the AUDIENCE for it. Them there kids aren't looking, they know not of this organic music of which you speak. This situation ain't going to resolve itself on its own. Your choice is either to continue to sit in the gallery shouting at the stage or get out there and do something. Your choice.

name thyself please, Kanye fan. it isn't Mr Kulkarni, is it? something about the "Joe and Jenny" references recall Neil's digs at Warwick University students in MM nigh on ten years ago.

(all that being said, i've got a nerve to say that, seeing as i am rather transparently a certain R. Carmody)

phoebe dinsmore's bastard nephew (robin carmody), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Manufactured bands are great. You know, like the Temptations, the Pistols, Public Enemy, etc etc.

There are still plenty of genuinely independent labels putting out great, indifferent and shite music, Kanye fan. Also, I hear there's this thing called the Interweb where lots of completely independent artists can get worldwide exposure for their music without even pressing it on plastic discs.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and multi x-post:

When John Squire formed The Seahorses he auditioned dozens and dopzens of singers, drummers and bassists.

So how the hell did he end up hiring those pot-plants?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the keane single sounds like 'something changed' by pulp and 'driftwood' or some other travis single.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Something Changed" is one of the most perfect songs of all time and Keane wish they had a millionth of Pulp's stardust.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like it.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the b-side of the first keane single on fierce panda is a really good song
