what i'm listening to - new shit from badly drawn boy and the earlies

new badly drawn boy -- fantastic piece of plastic, produced by andy votel, regardless of what you think of andy's records, this new record, man, what a difference a votel makes! it reminds me of the first album but with more soft-rock touches and the psych-funk flutes -- and by the sounds of it, votel has finally extingushed his jean claude vannier string obsession on this one. think - trashy-paris-early seventies drugs exploitation soundtracks mixed with morricone. yeah, its folk-rock but different, y'know-like.

the earlies? man o man. i think that something could come out of this band, the first band to utlised the warp back catalogue as an influence by still remaining like 21c monkees or something. they are producing the new micah p hinson album -- with laptop italo-progtronica dude gavouna doing string arrangements -- maybe a collective of musicians to actually do something interesting, again? like the millennium's begin...?

Hello doomie!! I got yer email. Will reply this weekend!!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

hello norman!!!! cool!!! what do you reckon??? this could be really good fun....

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

track six is like an extra track from the komeda soundtrack to polanski's cul de sac...!!!

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the earlies must have come out of my head as the perfect doomie band!!!! love the electronically phased big-as-the-word-fuck on a sunday morning -- dexy midnight runners horns and the eastern drumming...!!!! the backwards vocals!!!!

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

norman!!! i'm taking off at the mo' but email me with plans and documentation!!! this could be - dare i say - cultural significant or just plain weird..!!

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd kind of given up on bdb. i liked one or two of the songs on about a boy - that's his best record, the others are boring and bland in the worst way possible. i don't know if i'd be bothered getting this, but perhaps i am wrong and he has improved.

the earlies i have never heard of, but sound semi-interesting

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

holy shit! the creepy bush sample and the david axelrod/electric prunes choral voices emphasing how fucked up bush is... wotta a cool protest song. sort of like the last bobby conn album.

'i thought that if you had an acoutic guitar it meant that you were a protest singer..'

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i gave up on badly drawn boy after have you fed the fish -- loved the first album, about a boy -- a few songs but the new one?? its brilliant. its almost making me want to buy the white album.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

is anyone at all ever convinced by these posts?

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 17 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the earlies

pah. this, again, seems up the essential dullness of ilx.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha. the above post -- missing words. i just woke up from a nap to the blandness of ilx. my bad. anyhoo. i'm outta here.

doomie x, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I was just gonna say...this sounds pretty convincing to me. (Isn't that what we're supposed to do around here anyway--ideally, at least? Convince one another and/or be convinced.) Gwaan Doomie...preach it, won't you?

M Specktor, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

As Badly Drawn Boy defines 'bland' anyway...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Am I about to type this? Yes I am.

I just downloaded "Mornign Wonder" by The Earlies. Doomie, I kiss you.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 May 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But you're still a cocktwat. There, normal service is resumed.

I kiss you again next time I play it, which will be, oh, ur, NOW.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta agree with you there, Sick...what a great f'in song. Pity it's the only thing of theirs I can find...

M Specktor, Monday, 3 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it hurts me too always be right.

doomie x, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Got some more songs by them, pretty good, but not as good as "Morning Wonder". Looking forward to an album.

You do realise that they're not actually much different from The Postal Service or Junior Boys or any other of about half a dozen bands who do that indie-with-a-laptop thing? And that they sound almost exactly like Yo La Tengo would if they were remixed by anyone on Warp?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i can vaguely imagine what yo la tengo crossed with warp would be like, but you can certainly bet your ass Morr would put it out

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i have nothing but earlies love. and they sound nothing like the postal service!

doomie x, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be astounded if I could like anything by BDB and/or Votel (most of whose back catalogue I sold, has like, 1 good remix to his name) for longer than 15 mins. The Earlies I'll investigate one day.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked the first BDB album, but I've been totally nonplussed by everything since.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

he's right about the earlies. BDB i haven't received yet. who's doing it, doomie?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

some friendly, marcello..

have you heard memory band adn jody wildgoose? jody sounds like a warp-inflect acid damaged skip spence!

doomie x, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

have received both but so far have only managed to listen to the Memory Band - and was very impressed.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hey you know what's a good votel/bdb song, 'my friend cubilas'! i used to love that shit. how did i get here

prima fassy (mwah), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

you should crack open that jody wildgoose ... tis super!
