Kids these days (I felt old when...)

I felt old when I went to see Elvis Costello in Oxford and Memphis and the only other people interested in getting close to the stage were over 35. I swear, out of the 200-300 at both shows I was at, I would say that at most 150 of them were interested in getting close and listening and they were the old folks who got tickets. All the young dudes were hanging in the back, sipping on their import beer, and chatting away through the whole show. It was quite confusing to me really. This must be backwards. I though the young people would be there for the music and the older folks would be there more because it was "the place to be seen" that night. And I've seen the same thing at Reigning Sound shows around town, so it's not just because Costello's fanbase is mostly sporting walkers.

What moments have you realized that you were getting old, and that you "just don't understand kids these days" in musical situations.

when you think you've got cataracts every time the dry-ice is slightly overdone.

(of course, dry-ice can not be anything but.)

since when did old folk want "to be seen"?

I take it you've never ben to Oxford, Ms...

and Mike, any idea where I could score two for EC's show tonight? I'm willing to pay good $$$ (but not stand in that ridiculous line just to be turned down when they run out)

I felt old at a Slipknot show on Monday night. There were kids running around who I swear were 12.

The feeling even snuck into a piece I wrote here.

The first time I went out when Richie Hawtin was spinning and the dance floor was so full of kids standing with their arms folded watching Richie play records that there was no room to dance, I was like "WTF?" Now I don't even bother to go anymore because it's always like this.

First time I saw kids crying unselfconsciously and yelling out the words to an emo band.

My inner 16-year-old Pavement fan didn't know what the fuck was going on

Actually, I feel young and ahead of the game, still very full of piss and vinegar when I read about kids like:

Hardcore, as defined by Travis Leblanc, an English freshman, is a type of music with a couple of distinctions from metal. There is a chugging beat, which you dance to, "crazy" tunings with many dissonant chords, and a screamer, a singer who can "growl and shout his head off."

Moribund old people -- rock critics, develop cataracts and must go to glue factory.

Talking to somebody else and not paying attention is probably the only way I can listen to Elvis Costello.
