it's driving me crazy, but i know "float on" bears a strong similarity to another tune and haven't a clue what it is. anyone else notice a similarity?

"YMCA"... it's in the bassline

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 18 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it sounds vaguely like "Attractive Female Wanted" by Rod Stewart

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's on Blondes Have More Fun

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

it doesn't sound like anything else to my ears. It was just playing on the radio in the car and, with the weather being all nice and stuff, it sorta made my day

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

to me it sounds like a faster version of the song that precedes it on the album ("The World At Large"), but that's probably not the one you're looking for :)

I love it, but I just can't stand how my brain mixes it with the Rod Stewart song when I think about the two tracks.

Its disco.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The album's really growing on me. it's a spring album whereas M&A was a fall one.

Elliot (Elliot), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Float On" is the only good song on the album and I am already sick of it.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

sucks for you

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I am quite pleased with myself, thanks.

two months pass...
That "alright, already" part sounds like "Come On, Eileen" to me.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw a bunch of reviews of "float on" that were all like "omg! mm in talking heads shockah wtf?!?"

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The second half shares a melody with James' 'She's A Star'.

I reckon.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

People it sounds a LOT like FF's "Take Me Out" come on now!

Having forgotten its similarity to "Attractive Female Wanted," I'm really upset this post got revived.

In a not-specifically-melodic sense, I definitely think it sounds like the Pixies covering the Talking Heads. Part of why its one of the best songs this year.

modest mouse's "float on" sounds like....

...shit?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Brock's singing on that tune sounds a lot like Robert Smith circa The Top. Just sayin.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

People it sounds a LOT like FF's "Take Me Out" come on now!

I'll agree with that. Plus the intro section of "Take Me Out" sounds like it could be a Strokes song.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Strokes sound like Television!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 21 June 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The vocal delivery is early Byrne meets Black Francis (on those shrieking high notes: "I backed my car into a **CCCOOOPPP***car the other day") but the rest of the song is neither. And, incidentally, it beats the Tom Waits impersonations that come later in the album.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 21 June 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Tom waits aping is pretty dire.
