a question about R kelly

Would so many people be so eager to buy r kelly's records, so eager to dissasociate the artist from what he has done and so eager to swoon over his oevure If even one of the underage girls he molested were white?

robert lashley (brotherman), Sunday, 18 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't (and don't) have any idea what race the girls he's accused of molesting are.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The real scandal is that if he made a shit record none of us would listen to it!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I have always thought of his songs as rubbish. In fact I felt flabbergasted when I realised Arse Smelly had done 'Ignition (Remix)' because I actually enjoyed that a hell of a lot!

Hey Not Fire A Hug Not Here, Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

if he was a white artist who only went with white girls would you even have asked this question

half dread, Sunday, 18 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If he were green we'd all be talking about it like crazy.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

spare me with the OPWM sanctimony and answer the question.

robert lashley (brotherman), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(what's OPWM?)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Original Poster Wants Medication

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

so eager to swoon over his oevure

Even if the only one he was molesting was himself, R.Kelly should be beheaded for the lo.com.denom anthem that was "Feelin' on Yo Booty."

*gets willy out*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This is possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, the original question and anti-"Feelin' On Yo Booty" sentiment

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess you have a point though, people only condone R. Kelly because he "usually goes with" black girls. If he were often pictured w/ white women, no one would ever listen to him again, like no one ever listens to the Who anymore.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Who never wrote anything as pathetically embarassing as "Feelin' On Yo Booty," actually,

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything I've ever heard by the Who is more embarassing than Feelin' On Yo Booty.

Did they record that "just take them old records off the shelf" song or do they just seem like they did?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

everything after Tommy to thread too

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they record that "just take them old records off the shelf" song or do they just seem like they did?

That's Bob Seger....you dolt.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Seger is real awesome.

Generally, I mean

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"players wanna play, ballers wanna ball, rollers wanna roll" is more zen than anything that damn Baba got Pete Townshend to think up

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I knew it wasn't the Who, I just needed something to evoke how terminally uncool they are.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

if the musics good, its good, nobodys gonna stop listening to music that they like based on the fact that they dont agree with whatever the artist gets up to in his personal life (prince sucks his own cock, jacko molests little boys and well, the man has issues, RnB is full of freaks, maybe a more appropiete question would be if r-kelly was white or if it was a well known white artist faced the same chages hoe would the reaction be different. hes black, he likes black girls, it was the fact that they were only 13 that makes it an issue. most people dont even concern themself with the knowledge of what race the girls r kelly was with were so i doubt it effects anything, if you mean would the press..etc react if it were white girls i honestly dont see how this would effect things, its not like the eminem thing were the race was a issue so they noticed him more. its racism on your part for even thinking of this question, would it make a differce to you?.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Who Sings My Generation is actually one of the coolest records I've ever heard.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the court had yet to decide whether Our Kelly has molested anybody. Doesn't that make your original question libellous?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince sucks his own cock?

Awesome!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Feelin' on Yo Booty" is one of my favorite songs and not mentioning any anti-FOYB posters' favorite bands or anything but some post-punk bands I know of could learn a LOT from "Feelin' on Yo Booty" about not being pretentious.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean I'll take

this is my song for real, no doubt,
and the DJ's makin' me feel thugged out
as I walk you to the dance floor, baby get your dance on
put your arms around me, I'm feelin' on yo booty

over

We must dream of promised lands and fields
That never fade in season
As we move towards no end we learn to die
Red tears are shed on grey

any DAY, and I took honors in English literature, so um nyah.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no problems with bands/artists being pretentious. Cite any universally beloved artist -- Bowie, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, LL Cool J...whomever..... and chances are, humility is not their strong point. Being pathetic, however (ala the base and utterly crass "FOYB") is unacceptable.

Comparing R.Kelly to Killing Joke is like comparing New Tide with Bleach to "The Gates of Hell" by Auguste Rodin. One is product, the other is art. Apples and oranges.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Product isn't Art? That's Michelangelo screwed then.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, you're wrong - about Kelly being "product," at any rate. Kelly's artistry, transparent though it is (which is a strong point), is practically without peer. Dozens of people try to affect a similar I'm-just-makin'-this-up-as-I-go-along schtick, but with nothing like Kelly's success: why? Industry plot for Kelly to be successful? "The public is stupid," maybe? No; it's because he succeeds in sounding believable & authentic. This is no small feat in terms of writing; practically EVERY pop songsmith tries to sound natural & unaffected. Most fail. Kelly's so believable that people think it's craftless, but it isn't.

Having both seen the original of "The Gates of Hell" at Paris's Rodin Museum and used New Tide with Bleach, I think I am qualified to say that the two are more similar than you think.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

(I knew I'd get a fite outta this, even though I am a Killing Joke fan - but Kelly is a better lyricist than Jaz, any day, and it had to be said)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

OOOOHH, FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!

A thread comparing R Kelly and The Who, and nobody's posted this image yet...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Honestly speaking, I'm not really that bothered by R.Kelly. I do think "Feelin' On Yo Booty" is remarkably lacking in any semblance of restrait or subtlety...but maybe that's the point. In any event, I feel bad for the man. He's clearly gifted, and if any of the allegations against him are true, it's a true waste and a trajedy. There are certainly worse culprits (musically speaking) than R.Kelly out there (although if I never heard "I Believe I Can Fly" again, that'd be just fine with me). I sheepishly admit to not entirely hating "Ignition (Remix)".

Why are people taking potshots at the Who? Why must everything be about race?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking for "Feelin' Gently on Yo Booty (Subtle Mix)" right now. It thinks its on the Japanese import single, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing that I remember most of that track is the finale in the video, wherein Kelly is inexplicably in a boxing ring (I think) with Li'l Kim draping herself libidinously over him, and Kelly punctuates the "boo-ooo-teeeees"s by zealously pointing at Kim's protruding posterior......just in case we were somehow missing what he was singing about. Ah,.....CLASS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

More likely it was just in case we wanted to see another tight shot of Lil Kim's behind. . .

(. . .which we did, of course.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Kim....as well as her oft-featured behind....are IMPLAUSIBLY overrated.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Awww that's means. She's cute. Anyway she gets big points from me for looking like she actually she eats and doesn't immediately puke afterwards. That's worth getting ahem behind.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

means?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Fire-Honouring Alex I haven't seen that video but it sounds to me like an old Madness video, i.e., one that isn't really takin' the whole music-video thing too seriously, which can only be a good thing, as videos are stupid

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

They ruined that Who cover with the "Deluxe Edition" shit...is nothing sacred?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

as videos are stupid

Very true.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevermind R.Kelly, J0hn MET BRUCE FROM `MAIDEN!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dismissively calling R. Kelly "product" belies a willfully disingenuous view of R. and of pop music, period. Kelly consistently takes bizarre and original directions that would generally be considered counterproductive to conventional mainstream success. "Booga booga booga booga booga booga boooooty" is hardly by-the-numbers "product"; it's insane and daring and memorable and succeeds solely because the man is dope.
There's certainly no sin in acknowledging that it's not your cup of tea, but pooh-poohing it away simply because it's popular with fourteen year old girls and twenty something hood rats is elitist, stodgy and silly.
Also, re: initial thread topic; I wanna piss on you, yes i do.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wow.

I wanna thank you and all of the good progressive white folks on this post for reminding me that liberals can be vile fucking bigots too. You are just creative with your shit. I applaud.

Man, you seen some of the plastic sugery disasters pix of Kim lately? Scary (and sad, too cuz she was cute as a button circa Jr. Mafia)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Lashey: come again?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, what the heck did you mean by that?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

This entire thread might as well be in Urdu for all the sense it's making to me

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Forks lashley isn't listening to anybody & so means nothing: he posted a question with a very specific agenda (onset of thread), ilm had its own discussion fairly unrelated to his racist posturing, then lashley came back with a predictable "urf warr warr I KNEW IT" etc

lashley's "point": "R Kelly gets away with it because he's BLACK! 'Reverse racism' o no!" etc

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I know Michael Jackson is weirder, but they're both pedophiles. Interesting that R. Kelly's album sales didn't sink like Jackson's, but then again, Kelly's music is a lot better.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Thinking out loud here for just a moment. Can't we hate each others' tastes without bringing race into it? Can't I disrespect R.Kelly because he makes bad, shrill, overwrought music and lyrically embraces the lowest possible common denominator in a blunt, crass and tasteless manner and, allegedly, likes to relieve himself on underage girls? Aren't those reasons enough to dislike the man, regardless of the colour of his skin?

And can't people yawn at The Who because they're well past their prime, refuse to go away and are single-handedly to blame for the dire phenomenon that was "the rock opera"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

R. Kelly's album sales didn't sink like Jackson's, but then again, Kelly's music is a lot better.

DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING WE HAFF A WINNAHHHHHHH

x-post Alex read the original post. The original poster "brought race into it" by posing a distinctly racial, & I'd say racist, question. He could have hated (I would prefer "hated on," but that's me) R Kelly without dragging race into it, yes, but he chose not to.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

also blame Jethro Tull for rock operas at least as much as the Who: just because they weren't as successful doesn't mean they weren't just as vile

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Would so many people be so eager to buy r kelly's records, so eager to dissasociate the artist from what he has done and so eager to swoon over his oevure If even one of the underage girls he molested were white?

I mean, really, how obsessed with race has a person gotta be to come up with shit like this?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Good points, J0Hn.....apart from the hated/hated on bit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ha Alex I'd knew you'd hate on that :)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I need no surface nor supporting foundation for my hating. My hatred knows no constraints nor gravitational parameters.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

would you hate him in a box? would you hate him in your socks?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

therefore I think you must spearhead the term "[to] hate through" which will expressive an all-pervasive hatred - after all, you don't wanna hate on/through prepositions, they're what makes the world go around/over/under/through

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)
