Is it me or did Black Does just whip out a f`cking Gamelan like nothing in the middle of Miles of Smiles?

I MEAN THIS SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD, AND DEFINATELY SETS THEM OUT FROM SOUNDING LIKE SOME SHITTY WOLF EYES SIDE PROJECT.

But don't you think it was a fucking wastle to leave Hisham's awesome drumming behind (indeed letting him leave the band), using it for only that one break with the manipulated drumming?

Hmm, I think I'd like the new Black Dice EP if the old Black Dice was still chugging along and making songs built around his drumming like on Beaches.

Where did they get a honking Gamelan?!?! This would be a pretty sick sound live!

I haven't heard it. Is it a recording of a gamelan? I read it described as their "musique concrete" piece.

Tim Ellison, Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the b-side better, but I would

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon and Ian should start a band called Lightning Belt....

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

God i didn't even notice that typo :(((

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think they actually play a gamelan but there's a lot of 'tapes' stuff on there. also, another album---with hisham---is coming out in june

duke roll, Monday, 19 April 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

just saying, it's not so hard to find gamelan players in Brooklyn. It wouldn't surprise me if it were an actual ensemble. Not that I've heard the record, mind you.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And yeah, I wish Hisham was still drumming with them.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

just downloaded Creature Comforts.

meh so far

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

toby (tsg20), Monday, 19 April 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not so hard to find gamelan players in Brooklyn

?

Russ, Monday, 19 April 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not like they found a marching band either. think it's all tapes.

Beta (abeta), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing wrong with tapes, of course. I do love a marching band, though.

Russ, if you ask around a little, you can find anything here.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to book a (good) local gamelan band at some point...if anybody knows of any.

Russ, Monday, 19 April 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone know any bands using gamelan? I know Yoshimi mentioned that she likes to use some gamelan when she mixes OOIOO, but I bet you could make some cool music with electronics + gamelan....

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

There are loads in Indo.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me that I need to listen to this.

lisafrank! (deangulberry), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone heard Creature Comforts yet? Or heard material from it live?

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

*whistles*

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone know any bands using gamelan?

Barnacled use gamelan percussion on some songs...

*whistles*

thanks...but I wonder if I could book a show that would pay them what they would (probably) want...

Russ, Monday, 19 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen Barnacled play with the a gamelan....

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're looking for a wild record featuring gamelan in a Western music context, check out Don Cherry's Eternal Rhythm. Good stuff; the gamelan playing itself is a bit clunky but still imparts some appropriately zonked atmospherics. Sonny Sharrock brings his guitar freak-out stylings along for the ride.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe somebody should define gamelan...because I thought that gamelan groups use lots of different pieces of percussion, and I swear I saw Barnacled play what I thought were gamelan instruments.
I think you can hear it on the Barnacled 7" too...

Russ, Monday, 19 April 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

gamelan just means 'ensemble,' y'know, as in semantics...

Beta (abeta), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a presentation on Gamelan today. My (not very thoroughly and researched at the last minute) outline is availalbe upon request--gamelan is an orchestra combining gongs/chimes, many xylophone-esque metallophones, zithers, the suling (bamboo flute) and sometimes the rebab (middle eartern spike fiddle, single string, played sitting down). also sometimes GIANT DRUMS. often a chanting male chorus
or solo female singer. the non=percussive instruments handle the lead melodies while the percussion plays crazy overlappy/interlocking/cyclical melodies in the background. structure is maintained by the big drums & big gongs, which are the bassiest sounding instruments. they signal changes in the song (otherwise riffs could be repeated ad infinitum)

umm.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

also, russ, e-mail me about getting barnacled to play. i can talk to 'em and see how much they would want. i've been thinking of trying to book a bunch of providence bands down here sometime soon, just because i miss home.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a killer book / accompanying CD called Worlds of Music - lotsa great (though unfortunately edited) gamelan pieces on the CD, and the book offers a great overview (tells the differences between different gamelan performances, kinds of 'instruments,' etc)

I'm pretty sure Mogwai lifted a sample from the CD on Come On Die Young too

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've done 2 shows for Barnacled.
I think they're amazing.

I was just wondering if there are any gamelans based in Brooklyn/NYC, likely to play a 'DIY'/'underground' show with noise/improv/psych/etc bands.
My guess is that a group like Gamelan Son Of Lion has a hefty guarantee, tho I could be wrong.

The show I was hoping to find a gamelan for is already booked, but hopefully something will come together in the future...
One person already wrote to me off list.

Russ, Monday, 19 April 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

kayrock is a gamelan player, that's him on the new oneida album...

xxx

stevie (stevie), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

duke treetop, Monday, 19 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

WAS IT RAMAYANA MONKYE CHANT? I TALKED ABOUT THAT SHIT AS PART OF MY PRESENTATION. FROM BALI?

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it had a really short name that that sounded like the gutteral noise we made...
