Peter Hook is the worst singer ever. Except for "Dreams Never End", on which he is awesome.

Can anyone explain how this can be? I'm at a loss.

Context, time and luck. And he is indeed pretty damned great there.

where's the love for "seven reasons"? he sounds like someone else on that song, can't remember who..

Context, time and luck
Except that this phenomenon applies to live performances too, so I think we have to rule out luck.

I actually did get the LTM reissue of the Revenge stuff earlier this year from Mr. Nice -- it worked better than I thought it did at the time!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

wait Ned you didn't have to like pay money for that stuff or anything did you

it seems that latterday factory "sound" seems fresher than ever lately. i've been listening to the railway children "reunion wilderness" album recently too and frankly i'd have expected a 1987 release so have dated far more. it's the same with the Revenge stuff

*assumes thoughtful look*

I mean next you'll be telling me that you actually own The Other Two...and You or something

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Well DUH. And I even listened to it fairly recently too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently picked up a used copy of the "Pineapple Face" 12", and it doesn't sound half as bad as I remember it. The "In Peace.. In Peace.. (we'll) Always live in peace.. we'll live in Peace.. in Peace.. Always.. Always" part, as well as the rather underwhelming singing is thankfully eclipsed by a rather stunning electronic pop dance bassline not unlike "Fine Time".

you people have a disease

of course the only reason I can recognize this disease is that I myself own the Gun World Porn record, so hey

ONE OF US

DB and I both know a feller named Craig DeGraff from our KUCI days. Ran into him last week at the Sparks show -- he works for Rhino now and is apparently trying to put together some sort of Factory overview collection for American release. He's very much aware of the LTM reissues and James N., who he thinks rocks. Dunno if this will be something like Palatine or not, or even if it will ever happen, but he's trying!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard about this too. i gather the initial idea was a straight reissue of Palatine but that was thought to be a little too hit-free..

FINALLY I HAVE VINDICATION FOR MY UNYIELDING STANCE THAT REVENGE WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY DECENT

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are you again?

(He said while listening to Ogre shred his voice as various metallic noises clang in the distance.)

Well Hooky was varispeeded by Hannett on DNE just like Curtis was on the JD tracks, so that might explain why he sounds different and better.

Revenge - some classics, definitely. For example, the two tracks with Phil Cunningham and Roger Lyons - Televive and The Wilding are ace, as are Deadbeat, Little Pig, 7 Reasons, State of Shock and Pineapple Face. On these, I think his melodic gifts battle their way through. On much of the other other Revenge stuff the murky mixing and over-complex arrangements swamp everything....and some of the thumping drum sounds are bloody awful.

On the subject of Hookys singing - he used to sing a few other songs live in the v.early days of New Order - I think there are tapes of him singing Mesh around. (I probably have one somewhere..) Also he sang Doubts Even Here on Movement. There's also the songs that Steve Morris sang live and in the Western Works studio session - I've heard Ceremony and Homage with him at the mic....and there may be others.

I will also stand up and proclaim undying love for The Other Two and You. Two absolute classics in 'The Greatest Thing' and the utterly magnificent 'Selfish' and the rest is v.good apart from the weedy 'Movin On'. TGT is a real trojan horse....a deceptively *lite* opening, holding, waiting on the same chord, then on the 'She says the strangest things...' line it all falls into place. Selfish is the inverse - pop perfection from the off, revealing the 'No sense of reason' melodic hook but holding the vocals back the first time around for effect. Gill sounds fantastic - utilitarian yet elegant, plain yet pretty, in charge yet vulnerable.

"seven reasons" could turn up on the Matinee label and nobody would have batted an eyelid. i think the Windmills' Ray Thirlwell has based his entire musical career on that song.
