I just threw Acquisition in the trash, and the latest Limewire is disappointing. I couldn't get iSwipe to work properly. What am I missing? What's the latest peer 2 peer for Macs?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

nicotine.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! no results on versiontracker and when i googled it, the results were amusing--nicotine patches and such...and adding .com led me to a tax-free cigarettes website. surely this thing is a figment of my imagination...

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

er, kill me now...
nstall the Apple Developer Tools

Install Apple's X11

Install Apple's X11 SDK

Install and configure the latest fink

Enable fink's unstable path

Download the nicotine.info file and put it in /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/net/

Type fink index; fink install nicotine-1.0.7 in your Terminal

...wait a few hours...

Start nicotine from an xterm window in X11 with /sw/bin/python2.3 /sw/bin/nicotine

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well. it's the best. you asked for the best, right?

Newbies have no fear: although this document has evolved over time to be quite long, I wrote this guide with you in mind! The following is easy, it just takes some time. But for a music lover on a Mac, there really is no alternative.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well i get stopped at step one: where the hell do i get Apple Developer Tools and do I have to pay for it?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

As I look here:http://developer.apple.com/tools/macosxtools.html
it is unclear which of these I need.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

its not osx but have you treid soulsek classic?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ok Soulseek quits itself, so *that* goes into the trash.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Scroll down the page cutty linked and it will tell you exactly where to get everything you need. It even says above the bit you cut and pasted "1.1 Short Version for Expert Users." The long version that holds your hand every step of the way is right below. It really is easy. There's even an executable file you can download that will do most of the work for you, once you've installed the developer tools (which come with your OS installation CDs, by the way, but are also downloadable from Apple). But as already warned: it takes hours.

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I should also mention: if you're on a dial-up, don't bother.

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Install both XCode Tools v1.0 CD and Xcode Update v1.1

I'm stopped dead by this. No installation CD + no login to Mac Developer site therefore can't download.

Suckage.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You can register a Developer Account for free. Hate to get all repetitive and pedantic sounding, but all of this information is on the site cutty linked:

"Note: If you do not have access to the Panther installation CDs, and you don't have a shiny new Mac (with the XCode installer on the harddisk), you could always download the XCode Tools CD from Apple's Developer Connection. After registration, log in on Apple's Developer Connection and click on Download Software in the left menu and then on Developer Tools. From there, download and install both XCode Tools v1.0 CD and Xcode Update v1.1 (15.3MB). You will also need to download the X11 archive (Panther only). Follow the steps above accordingly."

etc.

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hate to get all repetitive and pedantic sounding, but all of this information is on the site cutty linked

that's why i stopped talking. orbit aint reading.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"After registration" ack.
Sorry to be so dense, i saw the billion dollar price tag and didn't notice a free version.
Still pedaling....

I'm reading, but i am not familiar enough with it for me to make sense out of WHAT i am reading. file under "stupid end user tricks".

i have my strong points, but installing software ain't on of em

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

and also, i have a somewhat nonstandard setup here. For example, when I see:
'The XCode Tools installer packages are also on any new Macintosh that ships with Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" preinstalled. The packages are located in Applications/Installers/Developer Tools/.

You should find and install both the packages DeveloperTools.pkg and DevSDK.pkg. Follow the steps above accordingly.'

I had no such folder. So I made them, in the App folder. Then the installer said my computer "didn't fit the requirements for installation". Well it's Panther. It's not all me not reading, it is that my computer doesn't seem to conform to their instructions.

So I will check free disk space, sequence of installation etc etc and this sucks.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicotine still has issues. I think I get fewer results with it than the Windows client, and can't browse files on a lot of users. (This may just be a basic Windows-Mac compatability issue)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

milo, sounds like a port forwarding issue

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Poisoned. It's a simple download, most reliable I've found.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Kill me now.
Just do it.
You know as a cook, I can say these instructions are like recipes--you have to have some knowledge about cooking to use them--too many assumptions. Like where the hell is the computer LOOKING for the developer tools. I put them in the folder that that the instructions say are designated for them, and still they don't seem to be installed, Shoot me now. Yes I am stupid, stupid, stupid end user.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the dev tools is an executable installer. just cook them anywhere on your computer, and someone else with set the table and feed everyone.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The installer says the table doesn't meet its requirements.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

make sure you have the dev tools for panther and not jaguar?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

having been reduced to tears by my failed attempt at software installation, i am now going to close the damn lid on the laptop, have a glass of burgundy and hope it's magically all better when i open it up again later. even though it won't be *sobs*

Here were my choices:
Xcode Update v1.1

The Xcode 1.1 update provides overall stability and performance enhancements to Xcode IDE, as well as improvements to debugging, workflow, the Xcode build system and CodeSense. It is recommended that all users of Xcode install this update.
[downloaded this]

Xcode 1.1 Assembly Rule
The Xcode Tools Assembly Rule plug-in provides a build system rule to allow processing of assembly language ".s" files. Installation of this plug-in is recommended for all Xcode 1.1 users requiring assembly language source files in their projects.[not this]

Xcode Tools v1.1
The Xcode Tools 1.1 release is a complete installation of the Xcode development tools. It requires Mac OS X v10.3 for installation, and can be installed over any existing Xcode 1.x installation. See the Read Me document for more information.
[this]

Xcode Update v1.0.1
The Xcode Update 1.0.1 addresses an Xcode IDE issue that could potentially lead to data corruption or the loss of files particularly when source files contain illegal characters. It is strongly recommended for all Xcode 1.0 users.
[and this]

Xcode Tools v1.0
Xcode Tools version 1.0 include gcc 3.3, Interface Builder 2.3.4, AppleScript Studio, updated documentation, performance tools. NOTE: Requires Mac OS X v 10.3 or later.
[i downloaded this first}

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Make sure you are installing Xcode v 1.1 and NOT Xcode 1.1 UPDATE. The update assumes, of course, that you already have another version of Xcode installed (which you don't, obv). Also, the file is in segments (for reasons I don't fully understand). When you click the "download" link, it will open a FTP connection, which will appear as a new drive in your finder. Copy EVERY FILE in that drive into a new, empty folder on your desktop. Then double-click the first in the series, called Xcode_Tools_1.1.dmg.bin, and it will automatically create a single .dmg file, which you then use to install Xcode.

xpost - you want the third one in that list. Forget about the rest.

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, you chose the right one. when you click to download that, it mounts a network folder on your desktop called SEGMENTS. you need to copy these files to your computer (option-click on segments, choose copy, paste it someone). then you have to unstuff all these files. then you need to mount the disk image for Xcode tools v1.1.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

matthew, you are a good man

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

*sniff*

"Fink 0.7.0 Installer cannot be installed on this computer.

A root directory /sw exists. Please see the Read Me file for update instructions, or for information on installing Fink on a separate volume."

I am off to the burgundy....i will mail luscious baked goods to anyone who leads me to a solution.....

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And just so you don't go getting too hot and bothered, keep in mind -- you are NOT going to be downloading any music tonight. This will take at least a day, and might take a couple of days, all told. If I remember correctly, those damn segments take a really long time to download. And Fink takes about an hour to optimize. And then Nicotine and its required components take maybe SIX hours to compile. If you are, like me, operating on U.S. time, I'd recommend going to sleep after you do step 2.3, then do step 3 first thing in the morning and it'll be ready to use when you get back from work.

Thanks, cutty.

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops. Xpost. Does this mean you got the dev tools installed? Good. Now...

Why in god's name would you have an sw directory already on your computer? Are you the admin on this computer (i.e. is it yours and yours only, or are you using someone else's computer)? Because if there's an sw directory, that would usually mean that Fink is already installed...

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't you AIM me and we'll figure this out... owl_of_minerva (.Mac account)

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, scratch that. I'm going to bed. Here's what you should do in the meantime. Open a terminal (this is under Applications/Utilities/). Type this:

/sw/bin/fink

If you get a message that's some variation on "Command not found," then I'm really confused and I have no idea what to tell you. Because I can't think of a program other than fink that would create a root directory called "sw." I almost want to tell you to delete the fucking directory, but that seems a bit rash....

BUT, I'm assuming that the fact that you have an sw directory means that, for whatever reason, you already have Fink installed on your computer. In which case, type the following:

/sw/bin/fink selfupdate

(you'll have to type your admin password)

If this runs, then choose "rsync" as the update method and let it do its thing. After an hour, you should be ready for step 3 on the page cutty linked (I'd recommend using the automatic install script that you can download).

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Monday, 19 April 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the help, it really is appreciated. I don't have the intestinal fortitude to mess with it until tomorrow I think. I've had my fill for the evening.
Thanks again!

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I love nicotine but it goes down all the time. I can't go a few days without getting "Can't save config file, I/O error(24): Too many open files" messages, and then the thing crashes or loses all my prefs the next time I connect.

Little help?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Moron's Guide To Soulseek on OS X. I'm working on it right now. It's taking a long time but it's easy so far.

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Soulseek just fucking quit itself on startup so I gave up and moved it to the trash (under OSX3)

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbit, don't feel bad. I couldn't figure out Nicotine myself. Too complicated; can't be bothered. I'm still using Limewire and am reasonably happy with it, but I'm not a crazy huge downloader or anything.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I started Nicotine then decided it was too much a bother...to much installing, too much messing with the system, blah blah. I like limewire, instead of downloading obvious hipster collector items, it makes me think of more obvious popular selections I should probably listen to. That and I go to record stores and listen and buy music there.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes, exactly.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a new self contained nicotine application bundle that might be a little friendlier for those of you running 10.3 (panther), available here:

http://nicotine-app.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl

i think all you need is apple's x11 distribution. no fink, developer tools, etc.

random lurker, Monday, 19 April 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

random lurker you are a god. email me your address, cookies will follow.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

While you're at it, could anyone please address my issues here?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Although that bundle from random lurker looks very attractive...

JoB (JoB), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I downloaded the bundle (already had X11) and it looks fine but it won't connect. Any ideas?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

you have to enter a username and password before it can connect.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it worth (in terms of downloads, not ethically) paying the $5 to slsk?

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a new - good - soulseek client for OS X:

http://chris.schleifer.net/ssX/

Don't say I never did anything for you.

lykvun stratta, Thursday, 30 December 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i get the xterm prompt in the top left, and nothing else

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 December 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i have that schleifer one, running, sort of. i'd like to try the nicotine one though, if i could get it up and running

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 December 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

try deleting all preferences then, thats the miracle cure for most nicotine problems (detailed here - nb the xterm window /= the terminal, which is in the utility folder in aplications). restart nicotine and leave it running for an hour or so. if that doesnt work either, stick with ssx until the slsk forums are online again.

:| (....), Thursday, 30 December 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

lykvun stratta thanks

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 30 December 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm quite content with nicotine, but I'll certainly give that other one a try. Might see if it's possible to try them side by side and compare the differences (search results, user browse problems etc).

Bloody good stuff :)

random lurker, Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

trying this new schlieffer one. i don't like the layout at all yet. so used to nicotine.

but i'll give it a run.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

eek, the search results window in this program is disgusting!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it only gives me the first song on any album i search for?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i'm warming up to this. working quite nicely now, and it's amazing to not be a slave to nicotine's round-robin queue-ing anymore.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

make sure Nicotine users check "I can receive direct connections" (if you can). It makes a world of better

Ganbare Goemon (ex machina), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

JoB (JoB), Friday, 31 December 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I like SolarSeek because it's small, fast, and OS X native. But then, I do not use 1337 SoulSeek features (I have no problems browsing, however).

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 1 January 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

soulseekx has stopped crashing in the new beta and it is now brilliant. ok so the pulldown menu in the new search window

:| (....), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

... is way inferior to nicotines 'remember' checkbox; also 3-4 times the memory usage. but it has features features features.

:| (....), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(the most important of which would be the configurable colours in the prefs because the default theme is HIDEOUS.)

:| (....), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't had much luck with nicotine. I really prefer limewire. I don't care if it's not hip.
also you can dl via IRC. i haven't had much luck with that though.

Holly (an appletross), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried Limewire again recently. What a horrible, bloated piece of software it's now become! It slowed my mac down more than Photoshop does. Acquisition for me (weirdly, it seems to return more results than Acqlite these days, even though they're basically the same bit of software).

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'd try one of these slsk clients but none seem to work with 10.2)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never been able to get acqlite to do a thing other than sit there looking crappy. acquisition, on the other hand, is lovely. which reminds me: i need to pay for it. yus.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

So about ssX -- I've downloaded the latest beta, running it works fine (logs into my username and connects to the server), but I'm not getting any of the names of the folks in my list for Nicotine. Do I start from scratch all over again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Has anyone been able to upgrade Nicotine 1.0.7 to 1.0.8? Because I can't figure it out. My 1.0.7 has become a nightmare to use, incredibly slow and non-stop weird messages in the bottom menu.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 26 February 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry if i sound like jw here but USE SSX ALREADY. it can send files now and remember searches. ok you have to re-enter your userlist manually but its well worth it.

bass braille (....), Saturday, 26 February 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I lost my user list recently anyway (no idea how). That's it, I'm heading to ssX.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 26 February 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ssX RULES.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 26 February 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it but i can't seem to download albums all that much. :-( probably because my upload fldr/itunes is practically empty? just got a new imac g5 so am importing CDs now. YAY. :-)

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Saturday, 26 February 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

USE SSX ALREADY

i would but i don't have panther. i'll stick w/ limewire for now, even though it's search function is horrible. "here's some results relating to your search, aaaand here's a thousand other results too that are unrelated except that they might start with the same letter of the alphabet."

eman (eman), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
Have there been any new, useful P2P programs for Mac OSX since February?

I downloaded and installed SSX, but unless I type in "Beatles", it doesn't
really get many results, or any.

For examples, my last two searches, for 50,000 Fall fans can't be wrong, and
Songs about Fucking, yielded no results whatsoever.

Zach S, Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

well, you are obviously doing something wrong then.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough. Maybe I'm not using the correct search terms.

for the Fall, I put in "Fall Can't be Wrong" (reasoning that typing in '50,000' might fuck things up since a lot of people don't put commas into their filenames)

for Big Black, I put in "Big Black Songs About Fucking"

Anyone else care to try those and see if they get results?

Zach S, Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

you haven't updated the program since february? are your ports forwarded?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

I just downloaded the program a few days ago.
As far as ports go, on the preferences menu I have 2240 designated
as the server port, server.slsknet.org as the address, 2234 as the preferred
port under the "connection listener" section, with an alt. range of 2235-2240.

Zach S, Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

are you behind a router?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm..yes I am. I didn't think about that. It's weird though,
I still get results when I search for things (such as the aforementioned Beatles).

I just don't get get results for slightly less famous bands.

Would a problem with the router let some search results through and stop others?

Port forwarding help:
http://www.portforward.com/

You'll need to forward the ports to get the best results for P2P. It'll still work if you don't, but not so well. The above site has pretty detailed instructions on how to accomplish this for most every router out there.
