Certainly the man can sing it, and he does look very good in that suit of his, BUT...

doubts. I just can't work it out if this is really quite lovely, or deeply so-so, or somewhere in between. It's not terrible. But... I dunno.

My take:

The area is coldplay/keane country. But there is a lack of pretention and bullshit. It's simply a song about getting away.

Coldplay Scientist : "Came up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry. You don't know how lovely you are". Yeah, try that on your girlfriend/wife that you've seriously pissed off and she'll be like "Dont give me that flannel!"

Keane "Somewhere only we know" : Walking sadly down country paths that have fallen trees that stare at him knowingly. Mmmm very pretty. I get the overriding suspicion that the guy has not done this really, just pretending and writing a letter to his girl about it.

Wolfman "For Lovers" : Catching a train to get away together, they see quite a few doing the same thing. Simple, straightforward, and possibly true.

Shake down.

'writing a letter' 'to his girl'

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what, it's really about glue sniffing in alleywways?

No, this is his chat-up technique.

OK, we broadly agree.

(For a moment there I thought it 'could' be about secret hidey places where they'd share their stash. Its that line about 'the branches are they looking at me' that bugged me, then just now I thought, Hey Drugs paranoia.. suddenly it makes sense! )

Well, I've added Wolfman & Doherty to the Rolling Best Singles Of 2004 thread anyhow. I think it appeals to my inner soppy bastard quite well.

I suppose it's more a case of "Look at me, I'm sensitive," vs. "Y'know what? I fancy a ballad. Go on then." where Keane & Coldplay are the first ones and Wolfman & Doherty the second.

It's turning into a bit of a Gary Jules thing for me now.

I really liked it when they first started to play it on the radio, but now it's been overplayed so much that I have to turn it off whenever it comes on. So ask me in a few years' time

i haven't heard it much so it's still kinda ok

Pete Doherty is the anti-Coldplay. I love that guy. I hope The Libertines will put an end to people buying Coldplay CDs and the band will stake their rightful place as biggest band in the world. The song is classic.

DUD x 10 to the maximum.

'Washy Windy' is what I have come to call it.

I use it to describe all music that is quite strummy M.O.R boring pop. I had to invent the term to describe what I don't like about Coldplay, but what I do like about Radiohead back in the days when Coldplay were the new Radiohead (what the fuck was that about?).

i think it's pretty good adolescent indie. it's really a love song for 14 year olds. this kind of thing was around a lot c.1996-7 and it seems to have vanished really, most chart indie these days seems to be more grown up, mid 20s music. i'm glad this was a hit, i like the idea of young couples listening to it. it's very obvious and very corny but that's all good innit.

I'm afraid I'd still have to say no. But then I think the Libertines are a bunch (or, at least the two that are "the band") of hateful little ratbags, and no, I don't find that the appealing thing about them. It just seems forced and, well, dull.

and under the old rules, this would be on Top of the pops this week.

But, no.
