WHY DO WE DO "Classic or Dud?"

It's a question worth posing. Most of the time, the poster already has a definite opinion, and if not, they're certainly leaning more one way than another. In all my time here NO ONE strikes me as meek, or as the kind of person that allows the population of a message board to truly sway them, or tell them what to like or dislike.

Search and Destroy has a valid function - for folks to get a sort of 'primer' for bands they may not know much about - or for you mixtape geeks out there.

But what's the point of the C or D category? Seriously? Is it to get a consensus? and if so, who cares?

I've posted many. I could tell you why I do, but first I would like to hear the ILM take on it.

this is a discussion board. it appears to be an effective way of starting discussions.

it's a meaningless red herring really; it's just to get people to talk.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not completely meaningless. it's a simple way of asking, "should i buy this alleged classic album i've heard so much about?" which isn't quite the same question as search & destroy.

There's about four "C or D -- C or D ???" threads where these ideas have been explored ... but yeah, I do believe it's just a convenient launching pad for discussions.
A "Metallica -- C or D" thread and a "Metallica Suck -- Who's With Me?" thread would likely generate almost identical discussions.

or even just search for an existing metallica thread instead of believing that your opinion is important enough to warrant its own thread.

we've done this before

wow and here I thought i was starting a revolution. This whole 'questioning the foundations of ILM' thing

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread seemed a lot more exciting when I thought it was about "What We Do"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, dont ask me how i jumped to that from the title

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

'Classic or Dud' as a formulation actually harks back to the proto-origins of ILX in alt.music.alternative, where those of us who were a 'core' group for lack of a better term evolved it as a starting point for threads there. I think we just thought it was fun.

"what we do" is, in fact, classic

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)
