Holy...I think I'm going to lose consciousness at the mere thought...
they're only the best band in the history of the universe and he's...no slouch himself, particualarly as a producer...I can't breathe.

It's probably just a rumour. Damn April Fools.

If it's half as good as the last one, it'll be brilliant.

This means, of course, that Liz Fraiser must give up her left thumb. HOW CUM ALL THEZE BRITS HAVE THEZE PAX W/ THE DEVIL?

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh. Leckie and Street produced two of my favourite albums of all time, and Eno is just god.

If this isn't true I'll MAKE it true. With a pointed stick.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

duke goldfinger, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

they should just produce themselves, for chrissakes.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god selzer is up too

duke too, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I sense disaster in epic proportions... At this point, either they should just produce it themselves or get somebody completely foreign to their sound/genre (a la Cure asking Ross Robinson).

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

This kind of shit will only work if E2E4 re-enters the UK Charts at #1 and stays there for as long as the longest dick forest tree. Insomnia: nice to meet cha.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

they should ask phoenix to do it, or air

I think this might be a hoax. NOOL tends to be a hive of rumour, however there are some insiders around that site too, so you never know....

Dr.C, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You might have heard on Radio 4 that Eno was also recently drafted in to work on the new Archers theme tune. The story is here. Ho ho ho.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Crikey!!! Wot would Eno do for the Archers theme tune!?!?! It'd probably sound like a croos between the Windows 95 opening music and a cow mooing!!!!!

Eno was actually supposed to produce Technique but that fell through.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i think eno needs them now more than they need him

Yeah, what with them being on a commercial high and having churned out a plethora of brilliant songs in the last 10 years and still being really relevant and all... [/sarcasm]

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hur, not like Emu has, then?

sorry, 'Eno' I mean.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I hardly think Brian Eno's ever been on a "commercial high", so the comparison simply ain't valid. Thing is, he just carries on in his own merry way, whereas NO have meant nothing since they released Technique.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Eno has produced for James in recent years so really this news is 'ehh...'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i made a couple of phone calls...seems it's true that he's been approached, but not certain to happen. So we're none the wiser!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah — with respect to the "need to do it" argument, I don't really see Eno's press agent telling him what an important thing this is to do for his "career".

('TECHNIQUE' : my favourite pop album of ever ever).

piscesboy, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"whereas NO have meant nothing since they released Technique"

pretty subjective. a whole lot of people were into the very last one (only2-3 years ago?), and moreover i bet they actually do a lot better than you might think commercially, albeit in a more worldwide scenario (many bands do). and eno's the one who has been putting out crap for ten years...(the robt. wyatt work notwithstanding)

duke surprise, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think gillian is out of the band permanently, she didn't participate much for a while because they had a young child or something, but it didn't sound like a permanent thing (so, I don't expect corgan back on the next one).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

every NO album since Brotherhood has had at least one classic song, and since you can always find the record used a month after it comes out, I say, KEEP going! even if their records are just one great single and the rest filler.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

Sorry for being subjective on ILM. I won't let it happen again.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

whereas NO have meant nothing since they released Technique

"Regret" means a whole lot to me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

_Get Ready_ is their second-best album after _Movement_.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Get Ready was terrible.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost as bad as _Movement_ (sorry Dan).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

noodle, i certainly didn't think you were aesthetically wrong in being subjective. but the fact is they still do well. and that eno doesn't have too much to show for himself from the last ten years either way.

duke laid back, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Dan, except for the last two words of his post.
I thought Gillian had some sort of illness that neccessitated the long-term break from the band (and therefore, the long-term sub of Billy Corgan).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

_Technique_ is an incredible album, as well. Beyond that, NO really should stick to singles because their other efforts don't work as a coherent whole, whether it's due to sequencing, song selection, or awful, awful mixing.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Get Ready had nice pictures of girls.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It also had ten great songs on it.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That never hurts!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

**_Get Ready_ is their second-best album after _Movement_.**

Venga Dan, cheers to you. I don't believe I've ever actually been in a situation where that thought has come to me, but by god, you're right!

Dr. C - I've been reading your posts and I gotta say someone who's crazy about Crispy Ambulance AND Chic AND thinks "Dragnet" is the best Fall album is a lot more than just okay in my book.

bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Get Ready didn't sound like a New Order record to me. It sounded like they were following, not leading, and it sounded too much(and hell, looked too much) like a 90s brit-pop record.

If people really thing Get Ready and Movement are New Order's two best albums, I'd assume those people appreciate New Order more as the post Joy Division brit-pop new wave band then as the influential dance act that mixed excellent new wave pop songwriting with cutting-edge electronic dance production styles.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, frankly the first description sounds more entertaining, see. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I was introduced to New Order via "Pretty In Pink". I heard and loved "Shell-Shock", then picked up _Substance_ when it came out and fell completely and totally in love with every song on it, especially "True Faith", "Subculture", and "Temptation". However, when I got to the albums, I discovered some shocking things:

- When they differed, the _Substance_ versions of the singles were almost always better than the album versions. In fact, the only instances where this wasn't true were "Temptation" and "Confusion".

- In particular, the _Low-Life_ singles were FUCKING UNBEARABLE on the album and completely ruined the experience for me.

- _Power, Corruption & Lies_ starts out strong but then fades into a shapeless, uninteresting blur halfway through the album.

- _Brotherhood_ never even made an impression on me; I might as well have never even heard it for all I remember of it.

- _Movement_, _Technique_, _Republic_ and _Get Ready_ all have a focus running through the albums that is just not their on their mid-period albums. I don't think it's an accident that at the height of their popularity NO was largely considered to be an excellent singles band; in fact, given their extreme club focus it would be more surprising if they didn't focus on their singles over their albums.

- IMO, the beginnings of the decline of The Hacienda marks the beginning of them rediscovering how to put together an album.

I wouldn't know about the Britpop comparison because when Britpop was at its height I was listening almost exclusively to drill n bass. If Britpop had actually sounded like _Get Ready_ to me, I would have paid more attention to it.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Temptation and Confusion weren't on any albums!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well no shit they weren't, but the original 12-inch versions are completely different from the _Substance_ versions.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear New Order,

Please work with John Robie, now that we all know he came up with the good shit, not Baker.

Love,

John Rocca

two weeks pass...
Well I guess not:

Pitchfork:
New Order Get Ready for New Album
Has it been eight years already?
Cory D. Byrom reports:
MTV reports that digipop sequinsizers New Order are already gearing up to begin work on their follow-up to 2001's Get Ready. This shows surprisingly speedy resolve for the notoriously molasses-paced band, as the gap between 1993's Republic and their previous outing was like a really long time. (Do the math, scholars.) The group has enlisted hotshot producers Stephen Street and John Leckie, both of which fetch top dollar in their field, as together, their track record spans work with John Lennon, Pink Floyd, The Smiths and Radiohead. New Order are hoping that each producer will be able to highlight the band's strengths in different ways, ultimately producing a varied and uneven result. (Wait, our words, not theirs.) There's no word on a release date yet, but if you're really, really, really, really patient, one will be surely revealed someday.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a sequinsizer? Is that when you go to the MacDonald's drive-thru window, ask them to supersize it, but the kid in the booth mishears you and applies the Bedazzler to your Big Mac instead?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's got to be some kind of joke, are they trying to be as MOR as possible? My suggestion: DFA.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooky has been playing a track from the new album at DJ sets he's done. I heard that there's loads of guitars on it, definitely not MOR! I'll hear it over the next few days, so will report back.

Speaking of Barney, has anyone heard the Ride track called "BarneyS" that was one of those extras from the Ride box set? Hearing Ride do a New Order impersonation was kindof cool, I think, and it's a nice tribute.

i've just taken five minutes to read this whole thread (i didn't exist in april). now, new order are my favouritest band in the whole widey world, but what the fuck is with the get ready love? if there's a lazier, more half-assed will-this-do effort out there, i've yet to hear it. i mean. rock the fucking shack. jesus WEPT.

but here to stay kicked 17 shades of ass in all its various forms. like someone else said: that is what the new album needs to sound like.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

funny to see ROC in a thread about eno since he refers to them in his 1995 diary 'a year of swollen appendices'. entry for feb 9 says: 'spoke to pete burgess about ROC stuff for Finch'. reading back it seems eno was asked to supply music to this (Nigel) Finch for a tv doc about stonewall. apparently eno too busy so he asks ROC to supply it - did it ever happen? no further mention of it far as i can tell

ken bailey, Friday, 7 January 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Ready had some naff parts, but can you really argue with:

Crystal
Primitive Notion
Someone Like You
Run Wild

???

I suppose you could, but I wont. I love Get Ready and am pretty damn excited about the new record..

From neworderonline...

Jan 06, 2005 - 8:48:13 AM - 2005 is a big year for New Order. Promotional copies of their upcoming single, titled Krafty will be sent to radio stations on January 24th.

The single is scheduled to be released on March 14th, but this date isn't fixed.

Their upcoming album, Waiting For The Sirens Call is scheduled to be released on March 28th in the UK.

Phil Cunningham is also reported to be a full time member of New Order from now on, replacing Gillian Gilbert.

Jan. 24th is only 14 days from now. Breathe...

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 10 January 2005 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

WHERE'S THE APOSTROPHE, BOYS?

Waiting For The Siren's Call? Come on now.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 10 January 2005 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently, they couldn't decide whether to make it 'Waiting For The Siren's Call' or 'Waiting For the Sirens' Call', and Peter Saville suggested it should be neither.

Waiting for the Sirens?

Call New Order!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 10 January 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Waiting For The Sirens Call is a very un-newordery title.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 10 January 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

mind you, so was "get ready".

i dunno. how can i be so massively unexcited about a release by what is (used to be?) my favourite band in the universe? i mean, i wasn't exactly hyped about "get ready", but it still managed to be more of a letdown than i could ever have imagined.

however, i remain willing to be proved wrong ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 January 2005 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

remember elton john got married to renate, his publicity assistant in 80's .
anyway
retro 9/10
technique 8/10
republic 7/10
get ready 6/10

every album from brotherhod - 3 brilliant songle and 3 gr8 songs that could be singles.

spo0oker, Monday, 10 January 2005 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Waiting For The Sirens Call sounds like a title Sisters of Mercy would come up with.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 10 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

for some bizarre reason it keeps making me think of the line "waiting for the death blow" from "100 years" by the cure. i think this is my mind trying to will the new NO album into sounding like "movement".

i would LOVE it if the new album sounded like "movement".

but it won't. like the last one, it will almost certainly sound like members of electronic, revenge and the other two having a jam and wondering where the old magic went. (answer: it left with gillian. but i've posted long and hard about this in other places over the past five years, and i have work to do, and i'm going to shut up now.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

er, five years? sorry, that's bollocks. two years, or whatever it is since "get cheddy" came out.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This album better be really fucking good. I'm sick and fucking tired of disappointing new dance albums.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a crap album title, though, with or without the apostrophe. Though I like that the single is called "Krafty" - maybe you get some free cheese when you buy a copy?
