Beck vs Baby D

Just saw "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" last night and was shocked to find that the main theme was a heartfelt indie-soul cover of Baby D's (other) rave classic "I Need Your Loving"!

Just found out it was by Beck too!

If you were a director and had to choose a rave anthem / indie-ballad combination for your new head-screwing blockbuster what would you pick?

(sorry that's a bit random isn't it? :)

A friend of mine does a cover of Ian Van Dahl's Castles in the Sky in a Manner similar to Will Oldham so I would have Will Oldham cover that in and Ian Van Dahl style.

I thought this was going to be a C-Man thread

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My pick, meanwhile, would be 'Sesame's Treet' done by The Mountain Goats

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i need your lovin was actually first done by NRG, and baby d then did a cover (i believe there was also a trance version by marc et claude, which wasnt very good).

the big vocal section from the nrg record was taken from The Korgis ~

There was a local band in Northampton that used to do an acoustic version of "Better Off Alone" by Alice Deejay. That was shit, but then again, so was the original.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to do a grunge cover of Mr. Vain (Cobain-esque screaming on the chorus - loadsa fun) and have been known to do Let Me Be Your Fantasy on acoustic.

There's precious few songs like that you can do. I blame it on those Fifth Lead sounds. Far too jazz fusion to play on the guitar.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There was also that Oakenfold cash cow 'Not Over Yet', which was originally by fourth-rate Pavement copyists Garlic

the fall doing pulp fiction

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

We had some terrible pub band at an office party do a version of 'I Like To Move It' which actually ended up sounding like Clock DVA. Fucking triumphant!

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I was going to go for Will Oldham too.

Bonnie Prince Billy plays Oceanic's "Insanity"

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha strongo's reply

Beck's cover is piss-poor i think. the Korgis original is okay. the Baby D cover of NRG's cover is weak really, certainly the weakest Baby D single (more love for 'So Pure' please). that said, in a taking sides i actually choose Beck (hair alleigance mofos)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i mean lil john doing euphoria

this must happen

Bonnie Prince Billy plays Oceanic's "Insanity"

I can't be the only person to misread that as something by Bonnie Prince Billy Ocean.

The Beck record is so damn weak, the chorus just collapses on itself each time it gets to the end like it's a bridge made of wet cabbage.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

From now on, my name will be Bonnie Prince Billy Ocean.

Imagine "Love Really Hurts Without You"...

jaja

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

L'il Jon doing "Euphoria" would be the greatest thing ever.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear Beck:

Remember how to scream? Like on "Sweet Sunshine"? Start doing that again.

Sincerely,
Nate

dear beck..remember when you sympathisd with poor folk?

mullydrunkfuck (gaz), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i would've liked eternal sunshine a lot more if the music wasn't all so shitty

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

There was also that Oakenfold cash cow 'Not Over Yet', which was originally by fourth-rate Pavement copyists Garlic

It was the Oakenfold cash cow that was the original, but one of the Garlic guys wrote the song.

I always fancied that Turin Brakes should do a cover of Modjo's 'Lady'.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 29 April 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I like Turin Brakes, but the song'd suit them.
