It's reported in this week's People that Andre 3000 and Big Boi have begun work on turning Speakerboxxx/the Love Below into a movie musical set in a Southern speakeasy during the 30s. Shooting is set to begin this summer.

I am already foreseeing how this film will work... it will be mostly terminally boring self-indulgent misogynist twaddle with one moment of brilliance. Actually, that's the film of The Love Below, the Speakerboxxxxxx film will be kind of solid and dependable but not particularly inspired.

seems to me that if it's horribly bad it will be entertaining for sheer novelty/camp value. And if it actually works as a musical then it will be amazing. Either way it's win/win for the viewing audience.

(as for Prince Among Thieves, I would be likewise super-excited if Prince Paul managed to get it made into a movie, as was his original intention. That seems more and more unlikely, as time goes on, which is too bad because I'm sure it'd be better than whatever Outkast come up with, since it's actually designed as a self-contained story).

and Jess it only counts as a musical if it's performed on-stage or on the screen. A record is not a musical. And Wild Style, Breakin, Krush Groove are not musicals either, they're films about hip-hop with music in them but they aren't structured as musicals (characters singing through staged scenes, etc.)
