I'm more concerned with how to stop it. Bahaha...I kid, I kid.

ddb, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it starts with someone saying "THIS THE NEW SHIT" and announcing himself as "DJ SO AND SO" in a hyped manner, with delay effects on his voice

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Because the bassline from "Good Times" just wasn't long enough, dammit.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

more seriously....you should look up DJ Kool Herc from the Bronx....that's one of the usually accepted "beginnings"...although I'm sure that's not quite accurate, and maybe someone else here could give you better info...

other names to google:
Afrika Bambaata
Grandmaster Flash
Fatback Band - King Tim III

'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' has some fascinating history in it.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Best summed up with a quote from someone off FallNet: (or at least paraphrase, I can't remember it exactly...)

'The other night my father came over to my house and I turned on the computer. Immediately 'Totale's Turns' (1981) started coming out of the speakers. "I didn't know you listened to hip-hop" he said'.*

So Mark E. Smith invented it.

*Any retardedness in the writing of this paragraph is entirely my fault.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sasha, scarily enough, Coldcut kinda claimed that very fact in an interview they did around 1989 after "What's That Noise?!" came out.. then again, it may just have been B.S. to help give props to Mark E. for the guest appearance on "(I'm In) Deep".

You see, when hip and hop love each other very much...
