I used to d.j. the Thursday morning slot at my lamentable college radio station (this was back in the mid-to-late 80's, mind you), and I'd often start the shift with "Running Up that Hill" by Kate Bush or something off Skylarking by XTC.

you have to clarify here. have you stayed up until 7am, or have you got up at or around 7am?

for the latter, the fall, as you might forget that it's 7am, or at least be infused with the hateful spirit to get you through. if you have stayed up all night, then by 7am you should have reached catharsis and, as the sun comes up, you should insist on complete silence. either complete silence, or hank williams.

"7 AM Juilander Sheer" Cornershop. Appropriate whether getting up or still up at 7.

In a DJ context, countryish stuff has worked for me - Wilco, Edith Frost, Gram Parsons, etc.

if you're rising and not too bitter about it, put on smallville by tobias thomas as you get out of bed and leave it playing while you go about your morning routine. it's like coffee with a little amphetamine kick thrown in to get you a-movin'

Re: Matthew's post, Gordon Lightfoot works exceedingly well after being up all night.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

At a party where myself and four friends stayed up, the entire double vinyl of the Country Teaser's 'Science Hat Artistic Cube Moral Nosebleed Empire' was the only thing appropriate. We were all pretty much insane by this point.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

lee hazlewood & nancy sinatra - some velvet morning
david bowie - bombers

pher (pher), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

'Ludwig' by Blur. Starts gently, then turns into vaudeville.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Up all night - the entirety of Kenny Dope's "Favourite grooves" tape works well for me (melba moore - "90% of me", "misdemeanours", "black gold of the sun", Jose Feliciano - "golden lady", that kind of stuff). That or Bronski Beat.

Just got up: M83 - "Run into flowers", Schneider TM - "Reality check", Junior Boys - basically brittle, pretty, synthy things...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 22 April 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

For me, after having stayed up all night albums by Morphine works pretty well. I think the country stuff mentioned could work either ways (waking, staying up). I just find it fascinating to think about music that could be listenable at a time where you are either god damn zombie-sleepy or totally euphoric by too many hours without sleep. Any more suggestions about the latter kind?

Rush Rhees (Rush Rhees), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I have spent the past few weeks ironing shirts in the morning to Bonnie Prince Billy / Palace (depending on which one falls to hand first).

It should really always be the Today programme though.
