Brother JT - search&destroy

I'm a fan of all eras, but if forced to whittle it down, I have to say search:
Music for the Other Head -- the greatest of the freaked, confused, ecstatic records

Spirituals -- my favorite mellow, singsongy summerjam record

Original Sins: early singles comp on Spare Me -- amazing eighties acid garage rock

JT live in person -- I've had the pleasure of seeing him literally dozens of times. It's ALWAYS worth it, despite the inconsistency. Worst case, you see a truly odd, inspired musician on an off night.

Destroy: the fact that he never tours.

I think the worst case in a live setting was when he took his pants off the time I booked him.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ouch. I've seen him the once at Terrastock II -- sang a great song about a moon pie, and it was a pretty fine little set. Also enjoy the four albums of his I have so far, and indeed Music for the Other Head is most grand.

yeah, the pants have been known to come off...sometimes to the benefit, sometimes to the detriment of the world.

Search: Dosed and Confused (a decent approximation of the live experience)
Rainy Day Fun and uh the other one on Drunken Fish (Come On Down?)
Way To Go
Original Sins: Self-Destruct (recently re-discovered this one and it is just killing me)
that fake movie soundtrack he did, Take Off Zebra Baby, is pretty cool, too.
What can I say, I love the guy.

Oh shit! Forgot Doomsday Rock. Essential!

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

don't get me wrong, I like him a lot. And the de-pantsing was pretty funny. I only own Original Sins stuff, unfortunately.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Original Sins albums fine, but I like the stuff after much more -- I think you should check some out, you'd probably like it. It's always cheap used, too.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I probably would, I just never got around to it. Maybe now that I'm working again, I will.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

destroy. boring records, saw him live and it was like seeing fred flintstone do a beefhearty blues/gospel impression for 40 eternal minutes.

i haven't heard the original sins, but i'll give them a shot.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Just want to throw some weight behind the fact that the Sins' "Self Destruct" is a monster of a record. Especially "Do It" and "Rise." I got that shizzing on the casette and need to get it on the CD playing machine so I can feel its rockingness again soon. Dang. Saw the Sins play the Middle East in Philly back in the day. Hace muy calor, si si.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"music for the other head" lp is great, also I have this weird live album I bought at a show, I can think of the title, which helps you exactly zero

I saw him play w/ oneida as his backing band, it was great

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have the Original Sins' 'Self-Destruct' and the 'Coca Cola' single. While I could live without the latter, 'Self-Destruct' is excellent. Didn't Peter Buck produce one of the other albums???

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: "Meshes Of The Afternoon" LP on Twisted Village

(In fact, if anyone wants to part with a copy, email me off-list)

Russ, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like Music For The Other Head. Then again, I haven't heard it in years - maybe i'll throw that one on tonight as I barbeque for the 11th straight day in a row and get quietly drunk

i really like Rainy Day Fun - no one's mentioned that one!

What's the Original Sins tune that starts out "kill the pigs, trip out, ALTRIGHT!!" or something? that one rules

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Acid is groovy, kill the pigs!" that'd be from Possession, on the Big Soul LP, I think. I liked the Peter Buck-produced one, too, "Move".

pauls00, Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Possession is also on the Spare Me singles compilation, Skeletons in the Garage -- which I think is the greatest single Original Sins album. If you can find it.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, by the way, Russ -- if you email JT from his website, you can get Meshes and the first Twisted Village album [I forget the title] on a CD-R direct from the man himself.
