So apart from Cocteau Twins, Dif Juz, Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil, who has/had that "4AD sound"?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Some Felt and House of Love records are 4AD shimmery - I'm thinking "Allergy" by HoL.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

don't we essentially do a version of this thread every week?
can someone show me a NEW shoegaze band
recommend me some lost shoegaze classics
Shoegaze tracks for smoking, staring out the window, and watching the fog gather at 3am
shoegaze?

admittedly these are all "shoegaze" threads, but they will suffice and give you lots of other recommendations.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the new blonde redheard album (on 4AD) kinda has a vers. of the 4ad sound.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think of 4AD as "shoegaze". The Cocteau/Dif Juz/Dead can Dance sound is different. I remember that when they signed Lush and Pale Saints (and the Pixies of course - and Throwing Muses too), it was a shift away from their most recognizable sound.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Siguar Ros has that 4AD sound. But 4AD bands are now grumpy old people, so they don't deserved to be compared to Sigur Ros.

Will you two just get onto AIM already?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

is that the label that signed the Trenton Seamonsters? I liked their early stuff, but they lost the plot after the Brixton Shuffleboard Uprisings

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

evidently our Ned really likes the new Cass McCombs

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm trying to aim for the nu-4ad sound so they'll sign us and we can be the new Unrest

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Cocteau Twins.

SLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes you can see in the "can someone show me a NEW shoegaze band" thread where I had mentioned Voyager One's latest album "Monster Zero". But I had neglected to mention in that thread that this album actually impressed me more in the sense of being a real '4AD-soundalike' than in the sense that it was "shoegaze". By that I mean, I don't think all or even most things considered "shoegaze" can be fairly compared to 4AD, but the Voyager One somehow managed to capture that 4AD sound, and that was a big part of why I liked it so much.

bimble (bimble), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that (to mention them again) Independent Project Records (RIP) are almost the exact midpoint between the 4AD 'aesthetic' (as it were) and the nu-shoegazer side of things.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I like hearing Voyager One when they catch me off guard, like being played on someone's radio show... but I could never bring myself to listen to, and buy, a Voyager One album. They are wonderful people, but every song is just trying to out Kevin Shields itself.

However, I'll happily marry Voyager One's music if it means I don't have to listen to another note of Los Halos ever again. Now, that's a band that is crushing and maiming Shoegazeland for me, day by day. I'm surprised Strongo hasn't had to listen to them in his store and gone on a vicious rant about them yet, given they are Philly folk after all.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you should hear Slowdive.

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 22 April 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Bel Canto!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 22 April 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Modern English, early on. Passage, maybe?

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a second Voyager One album then? I just have what I guess is the debut.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the micheal brook/pieter nooten record on 4ad is one of my favorite albums ever

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Rachel Goswell is now on 4AD and I just got the promo this morning.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, "Monster Zero" is their second one, Ned. I heard the first one later on and didn't like it much, got rid of it.

bimble (bimble), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

matt elliot?

robin (robin), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Rachel Goswell is now on 4AD

Uh, when *hasn't* she been on 4AD since Mojave 3 got started?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is her solo album finally coming out?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It would seem so. I've got an EP called The Sleep Shelter EP here.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 23 April 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Intriguing! I've been lamenting her very limited presence on Mojave3 records, so I'm pretty excited about this.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

AMG is listing a Rachel Goswell LP, 'Waves are Universal, to be released on 22 June.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It has to be better than the Neil solo album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the neil solo album is wonderful. not as good as the last mojave 3 album but better than the preceeding two

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I would completely reverse that -- for me it was the dry gulch before a brilliant fourth album. The live instore I saw him due for said solo album was SOOOOOO worthily dull.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i can see that (dull) but even mojave 3 live is not exactly a thrill a minute.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

This I will grant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Mojave 3 live. Gives me a nice, fuzzy feeling.
Rachel doesn't have a lot of songwriting experience, so I'm not sure how interesting her stuff will be, but we'll see...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Lead and Thoughts and Spears might satisfy your Dif Juz cravings. but only their first album.
early Eden and the Changelings have their DCD moments

general 4AD sound?
After the Flood - Seattle supergroup v. much in TMC vein.
Ruby Blue (Rebecca Pidgeon's old band)
She Never Blinks (Stephen Vitiello's band)
M-1 Alternative
Mumbles / Drowning Pool
have Hugo Largo and Lowlife been mentioned yet?

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Breathless were / are ok in a Modern English kinda way, plus they get extra props for having Gary Mundy from Ramleh on guitar.
Cindytalk
Durutti Column?
Collection D'Arnell Andrea were a French take on Cocteaus / Dead Can Dance, with a cimbalon player I think.
The first Drowning Pool album was pretty 4AD but by "Aphonia" they sounded more like Can (this is NOT the metal band of the same name obviously).

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Drowning Pool reverted to that 4AD sound on 'Two Clouds' (released as Mumbles, on Viva Records). unfortunately, they had also picked up vocalist Kelly Ray in the interim. music's great, but Ray adds nothing to their sound.

'Aphonia' should be reissued.

good call on Breathless, though i'm not sure what 4AD band's sound they most directly recall. more of a "general vibe" things. and Mundy has easily been the best thing about the last two albums.

And Also the Trees always seemed like one that 4AD let get away.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I had a Mumbles song on a comp. The singer sounded like Andy Bell from Erasure. It didn't work.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

CINdYTALK flirts with the 4AD sound. but someone enthralled by the Cocteaux, Dif Juz, DCD and TMC isn't necessarily going to take to "Everybody is Christ," "Circle of Shit" or "Muster" like a pearlydewdrop to a vineleaf.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Doctor Death IV, right? oh man. talk about a label that wanted to be 4AD. i wonder what became of Woody C'LM.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Friday, 23 April 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I saw Slowdive enough times to remember that Rachel can't sing. But hell, that never stopped Madonna being in tune on her records, so...

Lead and Thoughts and Spears? Is that one band? I've got more than enough Dif Juz cravings, so I guess I'll have to check it out.

Drowning Pool's "Aphonia" is a classic. I remember when they recruited that vocalist and became the Mumbles...it was so stupid because the vocalist they had on their first album sucked, too! I wish they'd done at least a couple of albums like Aphonia. Who told them they needed a vocalist in the first place?

I feel guilt about not checking in with Breathless of late...Between Happiness and Heartache was the last time I listened and even that was excellent.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend Cindytalk to anyone who isn't into industrial noise. I sold my copy but I have met people who flipped over it.

I think I came across Dr. Death somewhere on the web not too long ago...can't recall now what it said he was up to...a radio show maybe? That might have been it.

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 24 April 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel guilt about not checking in with Breathless of late...Between Happiness and Heartache was the last time I listened and even that was excellent.

The most recent thing I have from them, from 2000 or so, was actually a pretty good dive into drone/spacerock ala Loop/Spacemen 3, though still clearly Breathless stuffage. *checks around* Ah, my review...
