Music for a fifteen year old

I'm sure we did this before but I couldn't find the thread.

My little brother's always listened to the music I play and normally says whether he particularly likes something or not - generally I'd say he tends to be pretty good at spotting the same things as i like in music, so i thought I'd make him a cd.

He's recently been getting into skateboarding with his mates and was playing an indie skate video the other day. I nearly leapt out of my skin when I realised they were playing Beefheart, Pavement and a whole bunch of other decent shit on this video, so I decided to theme this comp around what I'd want to hear if I was a 15 year old skateboarder. Something fun, something funky, probably American-sounding, diverse, funny, silly in places, definitely hip or obscure (but not to the point where you fall off the ramp from the weird noises).

Anyway, so I blended the tracks best I could using Acid Pro to make it feel like more of a mix, cutting out some of the bits that go on too long and adding continuity to the bastard.

Here goes:

1. beastie boys - alright hear this
2. david holmes presents the free association - don't rhyme no mo
3. smashing pumpkins - tribute to johnny
3. chris morris & osymyso - bushwhacked
4. two lone swordsmen - brother foster through the phones
5. add n to (x) - metal fingers in my body
6. beach boys - catch a wave
7. bill wells octet - wiltz
8. pavement - motion suggests / false skorpion
9. the pioneers - na na hey hey (kiss him goodbye)
10. kyuss - supa scoopa and mighty scoop
11. bad manners - can can
12. mos def - jam on it
13. the cadets - stranded in the jungle
14. depeche mode - just can't get enough
15. nora dean - barbwire
16. perrey kingsley - space farmyard
17. sonic youth - mildred pierce
18. venetian snares - einstein rosen bridge
19. lloyd price - coconut woman
20. beastie boys - ricky's theme
21. aphrodites child - four horsemen
22. the silver jews - honk if you're lonely
23. the upsetters - untitled instrumental
24. nirvana - school
25. osymyso - fiver to bigwig

bleach is your best bet if you're putting a nirvana song on there though, so good choice.

Kyuss was a good idea! Some Fugazi might go well on there too. Maybe some Black Flag? Bad Brains? Les Savy Fav?

Albums I would have loved when I was 15 and skateboarding:

Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, One Word Extinguisher
Nas - Illmatic
Mos Def - Black On Both Sides
M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts
Four Tet - Rounds
Can - Tago Mago
Wire - Pink Flag
Aphex Twin - RDJ Album
Aesop Rock - Labor Days

When I was 15, I skated to...

Misfits - Static Age
Fugazi - 13 Songs
Operation Ivy - Energy
Television - Marquee Moon
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Wu Tang Clan - Enter 36th Chambers
A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
Lightning Bolt - Ride the Skies
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...

I'd recommend all those, too. This is making me all nostalgic like.

You're like 18,19 then?

Switch "Honk If You're Lonely" for "Buckingham Rabbit." That line that goes "When you're 15 you wanna look poor"'s too good to pass.

Just get him The Descendents "Milo Goes To College"

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fix up look sharp" should be on there. Obvious choice an all, but what good skating music...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 22 April 2004 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

How 'bouts a little JFA on there...early stuff only. Also, some 7 Seconds. A big second for "Milo", too.

Buster (mokey), Thursday, 22 April 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)
