Can your player damage your CD?

Anyone have any idea? We had a five-year-old Discman that was in pretty shitty order--skipped on most everything, even brand new CDs. But I swear some of those said new CDs would come out of the Discman scratched... If there's something up with the laser, and that's why it won't play normally, could that be damaging the discs as well?

And if I hit a big bump in my car and the CD skips, did that effect more than just my immediate listening enjoyment, or what?

Anyone have a clue about this stuff? It may as well be common knowledge for all I know...

If they're coming out of the Discman scratched, I think it's a mechanical scratching, not something done by the laser. Open the lid and spin the CD manually ... does it spin stably or does it wobble? What about if you jostle the Discman a bit?
The laser in a CD will start to wear down the data contained on the disc over time, but skipping shouldn't have anything to do with this, unless you leave the CD skipping in the Discman for a long time.
