Recommend me something different

I'm not bored with the records in my collection, but for the first time in my life my record collection has halted, and my listening is growing stagnant. My buying of new albums, etc, is slowing, but my hunger for new music is still as intense as it always was. Initially, I recently decided to do a retrospective sweep up of all the artists I had neglected to buy the first time round, to see if I had missed something. So I bought some Felt, some Bowie, etc. But I realised that I hadn't explored these artists before now for good reason. In the eighties, I had opted to buy Desret Wolves, The Brilliant Corners and Loft instead of Felt, and I now I knew why - I was happy with my original choices over Felt. Futher, I have always unwittingly liked artists who claim to be influenced by Bowie, but when I finally got round to checking Bowie out more fully, I found I didn't think he was as great as many of the artists he's apparently influenced - the ones I had bought over the years. My retrospective sweep up was not entirely without fruit - it did give me Nico and Ian Dury, who I now adore, but I've decided the future is the answer. Can people recommend me something different - anything, any style - twee, bleepy, literate, bathetic, under produced, over produced - so long as it's enduring.

I'm already big on Beefheart. But that's the past -- I mean something way, way into the future ...

to me anyway, those records have tracks which always sound quite fresh and weird and alien and exciting. i'm guessing, for some, there may be signs of dating on those records. worth a listen, if you don't have them, for sure.

Isn't this the point when people usually decide to "get into jazz"?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's when you're 18 and feel like getting into red wine too.

Oh god, my folly.

Got Dat Politics - through a Momus recommendation on this board, and they are really good.

busta rhymes aphex twin and susuma yokota I missed in the nineties, when I was too busy getting Squarepusher. Could sweep up these, and probably will do, but I'm interested in startlingly new things, and if that takes me beyond bling bling and even sound dust, so be it.

Isn't this the point when people usually decide to "get into jazz"? haha funny you say that!

I actually didn't mean to sound overly snarky. I do sorta like jazz and all.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Give up listening to music so much, concertrate on your work, get a good job, send your kids to private school. It's over.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd need far more clues to start giving any sort of recommendations; however Brilliant Corners + "get into jazz" does kinda scream:

I don't quite understand what 'enduring' means here? many things are best heard a few times, and maybe never again. also I recommend going to more gigs, search for any venues round yr town/city (if there's anything).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yes, Red Rose last Sunday - Tim Hodgkinson skronkin' up a storm, damn!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that how you view buying improv recordings, Julio? Are you cool with listening to most of them once or twice and that's it? Not that it's a bad attitude or anything, I'm genuinely curious.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"I recommend going to more gigs, search for any venues round yr town/city (if there's anything)."

Argh, I've wanted to hear Observing Systems for months. I've never seen it and ordering from their website is fucking expensive...I've got a friend on tour in Europe who said he'd pick it up for me, hopefully he comes through with it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a gorgeous album Jordan, I've actually just (today) received it (and a lot of other T&TT stuff) from their website (I live in the Netherlands, so shipping isn't that expensive), after getting completely hooked on a d/l of Observing Systems (it's on slsk). If you don't have slsk I hope your friend will deliver the goods!

I ordered most of the stuff on vinyl, but I have the debut and EA1 EA2 on cd. If you're interested we could perhaps trade?

willem (willem), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my friend has it all on vinyl too (Youngblood Brass Band btw, I think they just played a few dates in the Netherlands last week?).

I'll mail you about a trade, thx.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

He's in Youngblood Brass Band?!? A lot of their stuff was nicked from their van after their gig in Rotterdam at the Motel Mozaique festival! I hope they've been able to get some new instruments, as it seemed to be a bit of a problem (being a sunday and all). Have you heard from him yet? (I wasn't at the festival, I read about the theft on a blog)

willem (willem), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, seems like everyone's heard about that shit. Yeah, I can't believe it. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to any of them, but I hope they figured something out.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

''Is that how you view buying improv recordings, Julio? Are you cool with listening to most of them once or twice and that's it? Not that it's a bad attitude or anything, I'm genuinely curious.''

yeah, listening once/twice to an improv record is no problem to me, this kind of stuff is really good for the one 'rilly rilly focused listen', actually.

Then again I've never really listened to 'normal' albums again and again over a week like some ppl seem to do (and even if i wanted to do that now, I wouldn't have the time). I do try to just focus and get as much out of it in 2-3 listens when i first buya rec, and I've been getting into just listening to one/a few tracks at a time and then just stopping.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ami Yoshida's solo CD, 'Tiger Thrush', on IMJ. and when you figure out how to enjoy the experience of listening to it, please tell me.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

''and I've been getting into just listening to one/a few tracks at a time and then just stopping.''

and finishing it later, its what i meant.
