Kill Bill soundtracks/score

So the soundtrack is available, w/Volume 1 containing several RZA tracks (he's got zero on Volume 2 tho). It doesn't look like they'll be releasing the proper "score", a la Ghost Dog, maybe because there isn't one...? Can anyone shine any light on how much music the RZA actually contributed to the movies? Was it just incidental music plus a couple themes here and there...? Cuz looking at the soundtracks it looks like the RZAs involvement was strictly marginal.

There was some cool RZA music during the Crazy 88 scene, but I don't think it's on the soundtrack. The only piece of his on the cd that I can remember is O-Ren's theme, with his rap over the top ("This is for O-Ren Ishii/Half-Chinese, half Japanesey").

having just watched both movies recently there seems to be a fair amount of creative mixing in the movies - totally different songs segueing into each other - which I had assumed was the RZAs doing. But lookin at the soundtracks I think I may be dissapointed in that a bunch of that stuff won't be included. Like the weird bionic woman siren theme that sounds when the Bride's about to kill someone...

It is included, it is the theme from "Ironside".

Quincy Jones! what the fuck.

On the dvd RZA says something about how he and QT sampled all the sword hits, screams, etc. from old martial arts movies, I thought that was cool. After he said it I could definitely hear how they have that quality.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Quincy records are a gold mine for funk breaks!

What struck me about the first soundtrack is how only the (amazing) intros of a lot of the tunes were used in the movie, but the full versions get all soggy and go on and on (esp. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, and to a lesser extent the piece with the huge drums and horn hits during the slow-walk scene).

Yeah! That's what I liked so much about the music in the film itself. And this is probably GZA's main contribution (sadly the cd is unmixed). I mean, I love the idea of GZA being into NEU! but then I read an interview with QT where he said he specifically wanted that NEU! track because it was used in one of them 70s kung-fu films. Bit disappointing really.

i have the volume 1 soundtrack and think it's pretty great. the sword hit (i think) and some other samples are actually hidden tracks at the end. volume 2 didn't look as appealing--and there's bound to be a set someday.

Bought the DVD of Vol. 1 at freakin' Tower while in Seattle, and wonder now if I couldn't have beat that 19.99 price. Yes, I am cheap. Anyway, musical content: features on the disc include performances by the 5.6.7.8's.

The Charlie Feathers song in the new one is cool...

You could have saved the full $19.99 by just waiting for the Special Editions of Kill Bill 1 & 2, or even the two-pack apparently being readied for Christmas. Triple dipping in full effect, y'all.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll bet RZA has more krautrock records than Tarantino, but obv the NEU! pick was just a reference to Master Killer Or Return to the 36 Chambers or whatever Gordon Liu movie used that for the "oooooh oooooh danger is gonna happen now" theme regardless of who picked it. The soundtrack to the second one is definitely less "all over the place" and less fun, but you can't go wrong with most of those Morricone picks.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and I flipped out when I saw that Luis Bacalov's "Summertime Killer" would be on the Vol 2 OST.

Also, the RZA ode to O-Ren track on Vol 1 isn't his beat, technically; he just rhymes over an unaltered instrumental of Bixio-Frizzi-Tempera's "Three Notes in Black".

Goddamn I want the Rodriguez score so so so bad. Especially the plaintive "Theme From Budd"* (as heard accompanying the "that woman deserves her revenge so on so forth" monologue)

*not actual title, maybe, though who knows

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And come on, not including Isaac Hayes' theme from "Tough Guys" (as heard in the hand-to-hand segment of the Pai Mei fight)? Insane!

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i gather rza's role included suggesting the music for the film as well as composing it

robin (robin), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(meaning him and tarantino probably sat around smoking joints and playing each other records)

robin (robin), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I can die happy if I learn which one of 'em got the idea to use Zamfir

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I could never work out which scene they used Neu in and I've Watched the DVD three times to check already - cos I got it for about $3 in Chiang Mai last year. No extras but I've had it for the last 5 months.

tigerclawskank, Friday, 23 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That scene during the Huge Fuckin' Swordfight at the House of Blue Leaves: at one point there's a Shaw Brothers zoom to O-Ren, as she sneaks through a door. In the background is a brief snippet of "Super 16".

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers and is the track "battle without honour or humanity" brilliant or brilliant?

tigerclawskank, Friday, 23 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it was RZA. he was sitting in a chinese restaurant when he heard it on their system. there was much "this is exactly what i'm looking for. part oriental, part western" gushing in the Making Of featurette on the DVD.

meeker, Friday, 23 April 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

doesnt the new one have a zombies cover on it?

emma, Friday, 23 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

sorta - pop triphop remix/reworking of "she's not there" - think "standing outside a phone booth with a quarter in my hand".

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i like the second better (same with movies), though it may be just cuz it's newer.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, you forget to mention that the remix/reworking is by MALCOLM MCLAREN

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i've had the cd in my car the past few days, and if i'm rushing to class or some other 'stressful' shit i'll go to that track in pure yuppie 'calgon take me away' relief escape pod mode - SO corny. i LOOOOOOOVVVVED "standing outside a phone booth with a quarter in my hand" too so this is a weakness of mine.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That ain't a weakness -- besides, that "Standing" song was the only good thing they ever did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

SHOCKER

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, you forget to mention that the remix/reworking is by MALCOLM MCLAREN

I was dumbfounded when I read that in the credits. I thought the song was lovely...it's a remix of who exactly? Maybe I'm just predisposed to liking it because I love the Zombies song (for a little while I didn't recognize it), though shouldn't that make me predisposed to hating it?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 23 April 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The most scandalous oversight from Vol.1 soundtrack was not including "Nobody But Me" by "The Human Beinz".
