Green from scritti politti founded rough trade records. Am I the only person who was unaware of this?

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Green aware of it? Or Geoff Travis?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

my whole world is collapsing around me

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

dadaismus-dont mock, inform, have I just gotten my wires hopelessly crossed?

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't one of the UK superclubs set up by the guy out of Haysee Fantazee?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

their is no love on this board

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

*I'm not trying to mock. He might have been involved in the formation of Rough Trade but I've certainly never heard of it before. Geoff Travis was the main man, as far as I recall.

(*I almost typed "I'm trying not to mock", that would have sent out completely the wrong signals!)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I mean it's a BIT hard not to mock a BIT but one thing might be the formation of indie labels, esp in the socialist collective times of whenever might I guess not be that clear a thing

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, of course i forgot the socialist collectivist aspects of RT which precluded them having a mainman as such and allowed them to rip off bands in a more ethical manner.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

o.k sorry, it was the first I had heard of greens involvement and I had always thought it was some other fella (though the specific name I did not know). So it rermains possible but unlikely.
The thing is that Scritti Politti (who i like but my mates hate) came up in the pub last night and a friend mentioned that a member, whos name he later confirmed to be Green, was married to the sister of a teacher at the school where he is a classroom assistant. Occording to her he was a (not nessaserily the) founding member of Rough Trade
peace

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's certainly possible as Scritti Politti were one of the first bands on RT (I think?) and part of that Westbourne Grove... uh... nexus. Sticking my nexus out a bit on that one howeva

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Enlightening RT reading right here.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that Denim lyric?

"Rough Trade in '77
Just hangin' round the shop
It's more like a hippy joint
It ain't much cop"

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickb I stand corrected

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"he was a (not nessaserily the) founding member of Rough Trade"

That's a load of skank bloc bologna.

mike a, Friday, 23 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

is scritti politti the best band ever?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

If I remember my RT history, many of those early singles were co-releases - "Skank Bloc Bologna" was St. Pancras, "Aerosol Burns" was RT/Cells, and I think "Ain't You" was a similar situation. Maybe that's what Green means.

mike a, Friday, 23 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yes scritti politti is the best band ever

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Seconded

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

good, that's what i thought.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

green gartside = most insufferably pompous knobhead i've ever met. shame, he was a hero b4 then.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Insufferably pompous knobhead maybe, but still the best band ever.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Lukey, thanks for posting. I just wish you had put Scritti or Rough Trade in the title of the post as I would have read it sooner!

I was toying with the idea of buying Songs To Remember a few weeks ago. Cupid & Psyche is a classic. I like "In and Ought the Western World"...not "Messthetics" so much. I guess I'm worried I'll regret it if I get Songs To Remember.

bimble (bimble), Sunday, 25 April 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Songs to Remember is closer to Cupid & Psyche than any of their other albums.

Also, it's compulsory to own "Jacques Derrida" and "Gettin', Havin' and Holdin'".
