"We need to understand rap, folks," Limbaugh told his listeners, in a mocking tone. "There's a lot of poetry and anger in this. Social energy. It's important. Look, it's one thing to say you like it,

we did this - alex in nyc agreed with limbaugh (shocker)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm unclear which sentences are supposed to be ironic and which are not. It seems he 'gets serious' with the sentence beginning "Look", but then the last one seems a kind of bizarre step backwards. I think I need to hear an audio feed of his delivery, because I can't imagine it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

my bad. I'm just trying to take some heat of Christgau!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

of=off, obv.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

He thinks Kerry's lying when he claims to have "intellectually examined" rap, as opposed to if he had claimed to actually like it? That doesn't make sense.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Not one of Kerry's better moments.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

what's so bad about it?

hstencil, Friday, 23 April 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

cuz 'white people listening to hip-hop' = 'hilarious' of course (also 'integration' = 'threatening')

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Rush's implicit point is not "I don't believe you, Kerry" but rather "I can't believe you tried to pass this off as something worth intellectually examining and giving any value to."

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea that "white music" needs defending. I don't actually like the idea, but I find it pretty laughable.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post with Huck

I like how Rush identifies rap as something in opposition to "white music" (whatever that is).

hstencil, Friday, 23 April 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"oh why won't someone think of Eric Clapton??"

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Charley Pride, Rush?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I thought the idea behind what Kerry initially said was good, and it was perhaps a bit unusual for a politician to say, but since he has a reputation as a guy who has few definable positions and will say anything to get a vote, it seemed pandering.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

this idea where politicians shouldn't pander for votes is kinda silly to me. And to pretend that Dubya doesn't do the same thing (not saying you're doing this, just that some people think this way) is revolting.

hstencil, Friday, 23 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Something tells me if Kerry had talked about emo instead of rap Rush wouldn't even have thought to mention it.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That last sentence...wow.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Something tells me if Kerry had talked about emo instead of rap...
Is Emo the white music Rush thinks needs to be stood up for? Because really, if any genre is likely to not stand up for itself...

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Emo wouldn't get laid as much if it didn't play the "woe is me, comfort me" card

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm standing up for getting laid.

hstencil, Friday, 23 April 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Stand and be mounted!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting out of this thread before I get pegged.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, how I'd lurve to see $asha Frere-J0nes put the smack down on that xenophobe-cum-asshat Rush.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

He's clearly a complete cumhat.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He's an asscumhat.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

A junkieasscumhat.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If we keep this up we'll get Kerry elected.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Kerry's comment might have been truer over a decade ago, when it was PE and Ice Cube. Nowadays, hip hop isn't just about anger and street poetry. It's about everything.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't vote for Bush come November, but I'm still waiting for one of Kerry's better moments.

nader (nader), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, this is classic. Yes, Kerry was pandering, and yes, that last sentence is ubelievably racist. "stand up for white music"--oh boy oh boy...

no opinion, Friday, 23 April 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Rush Limbaugh f/ Bill O'Reilly - "Stand Up For White Music" freestyle (Ludacris/John Kerry dis)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, 'stand up for white music,' what the hell is he talking about? Wait, I know what he's talking about Kind of like 'standing up for marriage.' Junkie.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Campaign manager to Kerry:

"Do you know why Bush is so sucessful? He's rapping about big
screen TVs, family values, 40s and Arabs. You're rapping about homosexuals
and Vicodin... I can't sell this shit."

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahhaa daps to N.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

rush limbaugh in racist moron shocka

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Its just another sign that in spite of rap's gigantic cultural influence in my lifetime, people still furrow their brow when a honky stands up for hiphop.

the other day I answered my phone at work with "whats really good" and black coworker thought it was hilarious for some reason. of course given that she's a stuck up rich girl straight outta clueless, I think I'm blacker than she is.

Zac Shipley, Friday, 23 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Zac.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Frat Suspended After Members Attend Hip-Hop Party In Blackface

ww, Friday, 23 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I like how the story text omits the important "in blackface" detail!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it because they is white?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

why is it not surprising that GSU is the location of this incident?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the other day I answered my phone at work with "whats really good" and black coworker thought it was hilarious for some reason.

Uh...

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Rush thinks rap is overrated because the media wants to see a black music genre succeed.

Curt (cgould), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

did Kerry intellectually examine "Rubber Band Man"?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 23 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah I love how that story reads:

Officials at Georgia State University suspended a fraternity after two of its members appeared at a Hip-Hop theme party.

The university's Senate Committee on Student Discipline ruled that the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, which is mostly white, violated the code of conduct for students during the party, which took place in late January.

Black fraternity members from Phi Beta Sigma complained to officials and the dean of students agreed with the Senate Committee's finding.

As a result, Pi Kappa Alpha's charter is suspended until December 19 and alcohol will be barred until May of 2005.

The fraternity must also issue a written apology to Phi Beta Sigma and participate in community service of Phi Beta Sigma's choice.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

HONKY STEP SHOW!!!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhhh white people!!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is Eminem this election year?

mcd (mcd), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am shocked that this didn't happen at U o' Georgia, whose frat system is notorious for this exact sort of bullshit (they still had antebellum days when I went there). GSU doesn't even have frat HOUSES, fer Chrissake. That's 90% of fratness-see "Old School"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I read that as "frat HORSES" and clearly, I need to go home and have a nap.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a college where the frats were all unrecognized by the school, and were fairly terrible. Even worse were the girls who lived in my dorm who decided that they would finance and be the members of a cheerleading squad, which the school did not have. They went out and got their own uniforms and everything, it was really cute/pathetic.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Once again I'm really glad I never went to college.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I went to Gear!'s school

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a college where the frats were all unrecognized

Initially I read this as "I went to a college where the frats were all uncircumcized"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

also i hope zac was joking with that post.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

jeez where's YOUR head at?

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no pun intended ha

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a Rubber Band Man?

a d adam (adam michel), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The white music that needs defending is RUSH! Get it?

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I read somewhere he took the phrase "white music" off the website transcript.

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'ma bust a Kappa in yo ass. (Wow, that was stupid.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 23 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

we did this - alex in nyc agreed with limbaugh (shocker)

Can I just say in my defense that I find Rush Limbaugh entirely reprehensible, and if you think I agree with him on many issues, you really don't know me at all

But, I do agree with Rush that Kerry was pandering. Sorry, but he was \

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 April 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll bet he secretly listens to "Tootsie Roll" though

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 April 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Kerry doesn't know how to do anything *but* pander. At least the current president *knows* he wants to rule the world.

What *is* white music? Marches and polkas?

Sorry for the excessive *emphasis*...I'm *sleepy* and very, *very* drunk.

Evanston Wade (EWW), Saturday, 24 April 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Rush thinks rap is overrated because the media wants to see a black music genre succeed.

please tell me i need my irony meter adjusted, cos if not, um, what?

g--ff (gcannon), Saturday, 24 April 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a joke about the Limbaugh/McNabb flap

http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2007/01/rush-and-new-racism.html

Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

UART variations (ex machina), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

tony dungy = crip (HE WEARS BLUE)

max (maxreax), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

That's pretty redundant form, as "There, I said it" is supposed to be understood at the end of every Limbaugh sentence.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 22 January 2007 18:29 (nineteen years ago)
