(sigh) I guess it's time I checked out Les Savy Fav

All thru college, all my indie roommates were going bananas for this band. They'd travel distances I considered insane to see them. The little bits I heard didn't impress me, but then, I was much more of a Wire snob back then.

I've heard so many good things, I feel like I oughta buy this singles comp, since P*fork gave it such a great review. Give me five songs to download to convince me to buy Inches tomorrow. Or tell me why I shouldn't. Really, what separates them from all the other slightly spazzy cock-rockin indie bands out there?

they've always seemed to me like a slightly artier fugazi.

fjsdk, Saturday, 24 April 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

bingo. like a Vice magazine-friendly Girls Against Boys

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 24 April 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

POV LSF!

"We've Got Boxes" from The Cat and the Cobra
"Wake Up!" from The Cat and the Cobra
"Hide Me From Next February" from Rome (written upside down)
"The Slip" from Go Forth
"Pills" from Go Forth

x-post -- uh huh, yeah, sure.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 24 April 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i do not like this band.

ian johns0n, Saturday, 24 April 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

they are great. i just bought the singles comp today.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

most of the indie cats I know big-up these guys, but they didn't leave much of an impression when i saw them live (admittedly shows are pretty much the worst way to introduce yourself to a band's music). the singer's a memorable loony, tho - when he came into the audience and hopped around, the sweat went flying off his backhair and onto me like so much dewy grass

valley of the lawlz (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 24 April 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

POV:
1) "Blackouts on Thursday" no question
2) "Je Taime"
3) "Cut It Out"
4) "Wake Up!"
5) "In These Woods"

A year ago I would've agreed with the haters, but for some reason this band just grows on ya. Plus, Frenchkiss had the good sense to sign Ex Models, so they can't be all bad.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 24 April 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend who now listens almost exclusively to nu-indie (constantines, franz ferdinand(and he had the audacity in highschool to reproach me for preferrring the pixies over credence!))loves the shit out of them and assured me that even if i didn't love their records seeing them live would convert me. it didn't, but their singer is a memorable loony; at one point he was dancing onstange with a potted pine tree. he also looks completely different than i thought he would based on his voice; he's hulking and bearded

jklsdf, Saturday, 24 April 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i am so completely shocked by strongo liking les savy fav that i hardly know what to say.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit I didn't expect praise from him either!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dishonest Don II" is total genius.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 24 April 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

haha john sometimes i wonder how you get around in the street with those blinders on

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But in my case, you already knew. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

a horse is a horse of course of course

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Les Savy Fav is very friendly to non-indie ears, I think. Especially the last album, the Rome written blah blah ep, and the singles. I can't really get into anything before that too much, but I understand it would be more enticing to Jess's post-hardcore ears.

Of all their songs, I can't recommend "IC Timer" enough

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo you are assuming that I actually leave the house

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

John, are you posting that from the record fair?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

record fair is next week Ned - this weekend is reserved for the highly edifying activity of arguing with Calum about Suede

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well done sir. (Hey wasn't I supposed to send you a CDR copy of something? I forget what though!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

IC Timer is immense yeah, I love that little stuttery bit on the second verse.

What's the singles comp called?

ferg (Ferg), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Inches

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard much but I dig "Adopuction" and some other tracks on Go Forth. Artier Fugazi sums it up pretty well.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I also hear as a major ingredent in LSF, 6FS -- especially in the earlier material -- (which i suppose isnt surprising what with LSF's Providence roots and J. Ryan, Rick Pelletier and James Murphy being responsible for the recording of LSF's first single).

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

jack otm.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I think it's kind of funny how some sources of reviews are treating Inches as an album when it's more like Singles Going Steady -- I just don't see any cohesiveness as one piece in Inches -- don't get wrong -- it's great as a collection, but an album it ain't -- i don't care how much planning went into the "series".

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it probably doesn't help that so much of the latter half has appeared elsewhere already in various forms.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Thye have their moments, inc "Dishonest Don".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Holy living Christ, I just saw them play on a boat in Sydney harbor. Jesus, I haven't been to a show like that in a very long time.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 21 November 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 21 November 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm amazed nobody mentioned "Reprobate's Resume" upthread.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 22 November 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Reprobate's Resume" would have been mentioned if I had remembered the name. Also, "Our Coastal Hymn," "Hold On To Your Genre," "The Sweat Descends" and "Meet Me At The Dollar Bin."

miccio (miccio), Monday, 22 November 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

Will I like this band?

the next grozart, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

they've always seemed to me like a slightly artier fugazi

This hits the nail on the head. Although LSF's singer is high-pitched indie in a Doug Martsch kinda way, as opposed to Fugazi's bellows and snarls.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

Never really seen that much common ground but eh. Not played the new album enough to get into it but very glad this band are still kicking around. I was gonna try and go to a secret gig in London last Sat but I stayed up all night beforehand :/

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

and also, since you could claim this for any number of terrible bands, they are very good at being a "slightly artier fugazi. "

xpost

four years pass...

I like them, still
