...how can I have this done? Are there good places that will convert each of the tracks to some more easily manipulated digital format? I can't afford to buy a machine, and I don't know anyone with access to one.

Here's one company I found that will do it:

It must be a super-obscure 8 track for it not to be cheaper just to get a used copy on LP or CD. I thought 8 tracks were mainly just issued for mainstream stuff. What is it, Girolamo?

buy one at a thrift store for $5

It's an eight year old master recording of a local Baltimore band.

Wha'? People were recording 8 tracks 8 years ago? I think I have been thinking about the wrong thing. 60s/70s rival to the compact cassette? Do you mean an 8-track reel to reel tape that's in some kind of cassette? I'm confused.

Yeah, he was recording on 8 track. I don't really know much about the format, but I imagine it's just the next progression after a four track.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So it's not like these things?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 24 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. I know he said 8 track cassette, not 8 track tape. I have no idea about these things, though.

I assume you mean an 8 track recording made on a normal audio cassette on a Tascam 488 or like device. You might have to actually track down the device and use it to bump to digital or whatever. Or maybe you can bounce tracks out throught the insert jacks? They go for about $800 or so? I haven't used one in years.

Often times when eight-tracks were in general release as a retail format, an album's sequential listing of songs would be rearranged from the original version so that songs wouldn't have to be interruped when the tape skipped from one track to another

Now there's an opening sentence for ya.
