Anyone heard this? LOve Mushaboom...

sonnyboy, Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Mushaboom" is really catchy... it actually reminds me a Jim O'Rourke song. Unfortunealy, a lot of it veers a little too closely to Norah Jones territory.

eight months pass...
i like the album, but 'inside and out' (the beegees cover) is gorgeous, i cannot stop listening to it....can anyone recommend stuff similar to this? i've heard keren ann and such and I'n looking for stuff that's more disco-ey and not so french pop, but anything along these lines in general will do

manuel (manuel), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

her voice is amazing. i love her track with kings of convenience (the build up).

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is possibly the best album released last year.
Or Pretty Toney. I get confused.
Manuel: Mirah.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the Beegees cover is fantastic. I've always loved the original, but this tops it.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to the album once and thought "mushaboom" is the only thing worth bothering with, and then listened to that on its own all year. Beginning to feel this was a mistake...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah well, there you go... I actually think "Mushaboom" is the WORST track on the album. Too twee by half. I also share the Norah Jones reservations. However, her cover of "Love You Inside Out" is indeed a beaut.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

When is this getting a US Release?

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the track at the end 'now at last', mainly cos it sounds like she's going to start singing 'moon river' at any second.

BTW: It was Best Alternative Album of the Year for the Junos.

can anyone recommend stuff similar to this?

It is exactly the same as Julie Doiron And The Wooden Stars (Juno alternative album of the year in 2000).

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the songs are tres sexy in a girl-from-ipanema kind of way.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Secret Heart" a lot lately.

Waking Up Onstage at Jumbo's (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

why in the name of god did I listen to that Mushaboom cover?! my ears are scarred.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, I didn't think it would be possible to strip away that much of what I liked about the song. Somehow it's all gone. Thanks Bright Eyes!

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"I screwed up the first verse"

Is that all?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It kinda reminds me of Shatner's cover of 'Common People', minus the joy it brought me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW: It was Best Alternative Album of the Year for the Junos.

And she won "Best New Artist". Six years after her first solo album.

Vic Funk, Monday, 4 April 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

After many months and plays, I've had a major change of heart about this album. Everything that I originally thought was Norah-Jones-twee now sounds lovely and fresh and delightful. Including "Mushaboom", dammit. Definitely one of those albums where, even though you don't altogether take to it, something makes you keep playing it regardless. (Same thing happened with "Want Two".)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I had thought 'One Evening' was the Bee Gees cover!

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 29 April 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it is.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that this matters, but man, the US version's cover art is awesome. It makes me like the album a lot more... even though I haven't heard it yet.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i would probably like this a lot.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, "one evening" is the bee gees' cover? i thought "inside and out" was... lemme grab the liner notes

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 29 April 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

aw damn. this is an advance and doesn't have proper writing credits...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 29 April 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

inside and out is the bee gees cover. the whole second half is covers, actually..

derrick (derrick), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "Inside & Out" is the Beegees cover. John is obviously smoking something.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

She was unutterably charming live. The non Let It Die stuff was fab, too, including some fun live sampling tricks.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yes. The pills. The pills.
my bad.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"One Evening" is smooth. It sounds like it could be the beegees. She has a sexy voice, but sometimes the album kind of bores me. Other times I dig it. It's certainly not offensive.

Do you think she's going to get big in America? Is she going to get marketed like a hipster Dido? I'm looking forward to seeing her live.

Maggie O'Connor (unmitigatedhilarity), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised she's even made it on Interscope.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 30 April 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Feist live is the best show I've seen this year. By far. Better than Lil' Jon.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
she performed recently on morning becomes eclectic. quite amazing the grimace she makes when she sings. most of the songs could have been a capella. her voice really is astounding. very expressive and soulful. one of the most musical voices i have ever heard. it shows that she trained it in choirs. i don't know what to think of her album. i put it in the cellar with all albums i don't really care for. maybe the mainstream-muzak component is too strong for me. like some people said upthread when comparing her to norah jones. something is missing in the song part and her phantastic voice can't make up for it. she was really charming during that performance btw.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 2 July 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

"Inside and Out": single of the year.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 2 July 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Just saw her live yesterday in Toronto for free on the harbourfront. Good gig -- unexpectedly good guitarist -- but I still prefer disco-Feist to Norah-Feist.

Jesus, that Bright Eyes track, though.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 2 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

disco-feist seconded

manuel (manuel), Saturday, 2 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

The Harbourfront gig was awesome. I hadn't heard much before and was really impressed by her vocal and guitar abilities (especially vocal) and her band. I liked how she used the processing on her voice too. She rocks quite a bit harder than Norah (whom I also like), no?

So does she do more disco gigs as well?
