Kraftwerk boxset: a little question

I've bought the new Kraftwerk boxset "The Catalogue" (with all 8 EMI album releases remastered, from Autobahn to Tour de France) in a flea market in Lisbon. The thing is, this is a promo edition, consisting on a white card box w/ 8 CDs in card sleeves and no book at all. The guy who sold me this guaranteed me that the retail version will not have any difference, apart from a barcode on the back. Can anyone confirm this?

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Saturday, 24 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, but are they the original german versions or the english versions?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 24 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds as booty as boots come

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow...didn't know there was a boxset in the works.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you know when this is due out? All I can find on the net is that some of the albums are getting reissued in June, but no mention of a box set.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Saturday, 24 April 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i cant imagine Kraftwerk would put out anything in white card sleeves in a cardboard box, i mean i know the like a mimimum of information on their releases but that doenst seem right.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 24 April 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like you have CD-Rs of the complete Kraftwerk catalog, which is not such a terrible thing.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I read a Ralf Hutter interview today, the rereleases begin with Autobahn in May or June, followed by Kraftwerk 1 (!), 2 (!!), and Ralf and Florian (!!!), followed by Radioactivity onward. As well as the digital transfer from the original master tapes, each record will have more complete artwork ... Hutter claims that their record company wouldn't spend the money on the fancier artwork and gatefold sleeves that the band wanted, so the new releases will look and sound as the band intended.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!

My god, THAT took long enough. The 1993 bootleg rerelease program of that and the Neu stuff finally is supplanted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 April 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

germanaphone also bootlegged the Harmonia records...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But how did they finally persuade Ralf to agree to release those early albums??!?!? Maybe compromising photos of him and his bicycle 'praps?

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

But how did this dude in Lisbon get such an early advance?

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 25 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

mark - it is well known that Lisbon flea markets are where it is at for pre-releases.

That and getting fleeced.

___ (___), Sunday, 25 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm willing to possibly eat crow later for saying this, but I will only believe this when I see it.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 25 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

First of all:

___, the Feira da Ladra in Lisbon IS a well-known place to find rare promo editions, and I had the possibility to bring home the promo for Beta Band's "Heroes and Zeroes" as well as "Supergrass is 10", Supergrass's 10 yr compilation (and it comes with a cool pin as well!)

Mark, some of these people are insiders of Universal and EMI and have access to these editions. Of course it is a crime to ask money for these, but well, nobody ever got caught yet, and we, common mortals who DON'T have access to promotional editions, even thank this possibility. And NO, THESE ARE NOT CD-R's. They are REAL EMI promo CD's.

Alex (and others), information about this boxset is already on their official site (I just checked.) Look in http://www.kraftwerk.com on the INFO space.

Ned, unfortunately, the box only includes albums from Autobahn to Tour de France. I checked your reviews of the latter albums, and got a little disappointed with the box...

DB, check the pics below. These are actual scans of my box. I scanned top and bottom of the box, and the sleeve for Autobahn, one of the altered covers of the lot. Only "The Man-Machine", "Computer World" and "Tour de France Sountracks" maintain their original cover, while "Electric Café", though retaining its cover, has its title changed to "Techno Pop" (the original title, I think).

Sorry for taking so long to post back.

___, the Feira da Ladra in Lisbon IS well known to be a good place to find rare and promo releases. The guy who sold me this was also selling promos for Beta Band's "Heroes and Zeroes" and "Supergrass is 10", the 10yr compilation of the british band (including a cool pin to boot), among others.

Mark, some of these people are insiders in Universal or EMI, where they have access to this stuff. Of course it is illegal to sell these, but until now no-one gave a damn about it, and we common mortals who DON'T have access to promotional editions, even thank that opportunity. And NO, these are NOT CD-R's, they are REAL CD's, complete with anti-copy technology.

Alex, please check http://www.kraftwerk.com and look for the INFO folder, where they already have info on this box. (I just checked.)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 25 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What kind of sense does it make to release a remastered version of "Tour de France Soundtracks"? Didn't that come out, like, last year or something?

jazz odysseus, Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, shit, I thought the first try to post had failed. Well, there it is.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I thought the same (about Tour de France)... Probably they just repaired some glitches from the first edition. ;)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's finally coming out the way they had originally wanted it.

jazz odysseus, Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What do the other remasters sound like? I don't think I really need this, but I'm curious.

jazz odysseus, Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I would buy this on VINYL

Acid! Polizei! (ex machina), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I really haven't got to listen to it... I'm finishing my "To Hear" pile, and probably I'll be able to say something on Tuesday.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, maybe tomorrow, I'm listening to a lot of stuff today.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Autobahn cover.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm only interested in the first three albums. Although the Germanofon bootlegs suffice, I would like remastered official releases. I don't believe Barry Bruner about the first 3 albums being rereleased, though. Where is this alleged interview you read?

Also I notice the dreaded EMI "Copy Control" logo on the scans of the boxset. I refuse to buy crippled, copy protected CDs. Damn you EMI!

kjoerup, Monday, 26 April 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The interview was in NOW magazine, which is a weekly Toronto entertainment paper (Kraftwerk played here on Friday).

Here's a link

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That boxed set looks really really pretty.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

..they already reissued the first two albums midway last year, i know cause ive got copies on vinyl...

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Barry - you were right. Odd that the first 3 lps will not be in the box. And there's still that dreaded "copy control" garbage. Oh well. Guess I'll just stick to the Germanofons.

kjoerup, Monday, 26 April 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

..i guess they could be bootleg's though - i'll check when i get home..

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, turns out mine are on crown records, an italian imprint.. bootleg?

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 26 April 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

happy to know i'm not the only one who hate the COPYCONTROLLOGO garbage.... and i'm not happy with the new covers, except maybe autobahn, which really is the original 1974 Vertigo only UK cover and i always thought was better than the european cover...
... let hope the japanese does some good work just like the minilp versions of the cds with great original cover art and without any COPYCONTROLLOGO shit.

francesco, Monday, 26 April 2004 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post - Francesco added the year. I feel happier now)

Altered Autobahn front cover? I'm afraid that was actually the original cover of the Vertigo UK edition, before being adjusted to the painting at a later date.

Maybe I don't kniow my flea markets, but I would like to think I know my kraftwerk.

___ (___), Monday, 26 April 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Altered Autobahn front cover? I'm afraid that was actually the original cover of the Vertigo UK edition, before being adjusted to the painting at a later date.

The painting of course was the original German cover and thus the cover approved by the band itself.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 26 April 2004 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pretty sure it was a delayed cover to get the completion of the painting, was it not?

___ (___), Monday, 26 April 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno about that, but I'm pretty sure the band had nothing to do with the blue cover, if that matters, it is a better cover but suspiciously close to the Traffic live album that came out not long before it.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hopefully i can sell my boot ralf and florian to some sucker on ebay now

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops delete that post

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

All the covers are on the official site, on INFO / The catalogue, though the cover for "The Mix" is a negative of the one I have in the box. I will hopefully find the time to start to listen to it today and have an opinion about the remaster. Mind you, I never heard this before, so it won't be an accurate analysis...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk has been using that blue Autobahn logo both in the visuals during their concerts, as well as on the tour t-shirts that are being sold during the shows. I'll put my thoughts on the concert on another thread though.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything to do with the fact that W.Bartos is in the rear view mirror on the Autobahn 'painting'?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oops. W.Flur I meant.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahah they should have re-painted it so that he was actually in the rearview mirror, but standing on the side of the road!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

But what happened to the original Radio-Activity cover? The original T-E-E cover (possibly the greatest cover design ever)? The original Mix cover? Ralf and Florian trying to rewrite history again, I guess (eg: Ralf, during a recent interview: "Who is Flur?").
I'd love to think that R&F's tunnel vision isn't too narrow to allow the first 3 LPs to be included in the remastering package, but I fear it's unlikely.

harveyw (harveyw), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll ask again if these are the german versions or the english language versions (I'm assuming they're german; maybe the english language versions weren't even released anywhere other than the US. Unfortunately they're the only versions you can find easily here).

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

>i'll ask again if these are the german versions or the english language versions

yes need to know this, badly. TEE through CW in particular.

if one of the main selling points of the forthcoming seperate reissues is 'expanded packaging', this boxset isn't going to have much more than curio appeal.

also nervous about those 'bonus' tracks. there are some great alternate mixes from singles that need reissuing (the stripped down 'computerwelt' 12" mix, yay) but the idea of tacking them on to the end of the disc makes me cringe. the albums already all end perfectly.

(Jon L), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the albums already all end perfectly

ABSOLUTELY TRUE!!!!!!
ina aperfect world they just have to put that very few (3?) 12" and some alternate b side (like the japanese version of "number" plus some unreleased in a CD apart, and leave intact the perfection of those LP, beginning with the original cover, ending with the tracklist. There should be a law to make that Artist does not mess with their back catalogue (to reWrite history!!): some sad cases: Zappa (i wish i can put uncle meat bonus disc up his ass, but is dead), Ozzy Osbourn deleting bass and drum from first albums and rerecording dodgy new backtraks, Nurse With Wounds, Beatles... many more i suppose

francesco, Monday, 26 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa, I didn't even realize that ozzy did that to those two albums on the last reissues, what a fuck-up.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

to kyle and milton: From the tracklist, I can infer that these are the international (english) versions, and that there are no bonus tracks at all.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

poo

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything to do with the fact that W.Bartos is in the rear view mirror on the Autobahn 'painting'?

Wolfgang Flur is sitting in the back seat. Emil Schult is in the rear view mirror. I think.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
So what the hell happened with this boxset and series of remasters? Also, what is this 'Minimum-Maximum' live CD/DVD thing that is advertised on their website?

I saw 1 and 2 on CD in Other Music the other day, and bought 1 since I had good memories of listening to the vinyl at HStencil's legendary taco party. I'm not sure if it's an authorized release though.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually this seems as good a place to note that they are performing in the States again at the end of May/start of June, as detailed here -- DC, NY, Detroit, Chicago, LA. See you there?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

how might one find out what the deal is as far as getting tickets?

Word I heard from my friend Will, who tracks all upcoming shows, is that they go on sale this Saturday, 10 am.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you!

dan (dan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to the Chicago show.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Both DC shows are on sale at tickets.com, $40 + fees

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what's on Kraftwerk's riders but it seemed an eternity before tickets for the Seattle show last summer were available. I guess it depends on the venue.

This is turning into Chinese Democracy...

Any word on this? I saw this up for download on a torrent site today, and considered downloading it to see if the remastering was well done or not.

This was and still is more like Buttfuck Parlour Time than it is Chinese Democracy.

I got the 'Catalogue' promo box well over a year ago. The remastering is NOT well done. Unless of course you like your old Kraftwerk CDs with shitty new covers and with just enough noise reduction to squeeze the life out of the music.

If these ever do come out, you're going to want to hang on to your old CDs.

Hot Hot Heat (Hot Hot Heat), Friday, 6 October 2006 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

0xDOX0RNUTX0RX0RSDABITFIELDXOR^0xDEADBEEFDEADBEEF00001 (donut), Friday, 6 October 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe that's what taking so long. Cleopatra needs more time to screw things up until they are *just so*.

you know what, I don't even care about those albums anymore, I'll go listen to Cluster instead

frogbs, Friday, 4 November 2016 16:14 (nine years ago)

Fair point. Discovered Cluster about the same time as "Moon shaped pool" came out, and well.. It's not Radiohead's fault, but.

Mark G, Friday, 4 November 2016 16:16 (nine years ago)

But, you know what? I just 'remastered' them myself off my old original vinyl albums - the six UK Lps (sort of)

1. Kraftwerk
2. Kraftwerk 2
3. Ralf&Florian
4. Autobahn
5. Exceller 8
6. Elektro Kinetik

(First two are on spiral Vertigo, the double album. The last two were "greatest hits" that Vertigo still had rights to, the last one was just before the rights revered back to R&F).
