anyone dive into the Fugazi Live Series yet?

By which I mean this set of 20 CD-R releases. I can't imagine any universe where I need 20, but I'd like a few of them, but wondering if anyone has any that they particularly recommend or derecommend for reasons other than song selection.

doug (doug), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am resisting for now but eventually I'll buy two or three.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wow, this is great. I'll definitely get a few. It's about time they did something like this, they are a dynamite live band.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Fugazi didn't like it if you dived at their shows

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 24 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

boom boom

i might do this if they were dvd's

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'll get #20 for the tunes and the Peoria show for the frequent "Rap" tracks.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Fugazi live, but the prices - $8 to $10, I think, for plain ol' CD-Rs - feels like a rip, considering that's what Dischord usually charges for pressed silver discs, with sometimes elaborate art work. I understand it wouldn't have been as financially attractive for the band/label, but I wish Fugazi/Dischord had done this the right way, with much lower prices for a much lower cost (no art, no pressing, no studio) product. That said, if they lowered the prices by 50% I'd probably consider buying a bunch.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the eight bucks does include all the shipping and handling though...that makes a big difference...

I'll prob. get three... the first 87 one, then an early 90s and a late 90s one...very excited!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean 8 bucks is pretty cheap when you consider all the time and effort it takes to just compile the material, master, etc....plus do the website and all that....it's really more like 6 bucks plus S&H...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

$10 postage paid for a double disc set is a bargain, even if it's on cd-r - it's not like they are burning album tracks, these are first generation copies of performances that you can't get anywhere else.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

$10 for anything is a bargain. However, a blank CD-R costs, what, fifty cents? And no art? And straight from soundboard (no new mixing/mastering)? I love the idea, but it's still overpriced. Esp. considering Pearl Jam did more or less the same thing only a) offered hundreds of shows b) mastered them c) provided (admittedly simple) art and d) distributed them. Granted, Pearl Jam had Sony behind it, but still - if Fugazi wanted to, they could just print up, say, 1000 of each show and then reprint if things sell out.

That said, I'm sure I'll buy a few, but if they were proper discs and not CD-Rs I'd consider getting them all.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought the "5-7-99 KILKENNEY, IRELAND/ FRIARY HALL" disc but haven't received it yet.

andrew 'dean!' clay (deangulberry), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

got sent 'kuala lumpur 1996' this morning. cool packaging (lloks like a glen e friedman snap on the cover) and in jewel case, sound is AMAZING

stevie (stevie), Monday, 26 April 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the first time they are doing this, so they may not be sure of what the demand is, so they may be understandably reluctant to print a set amount of any of the shows.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe they should have just printed up, say, five shows instead of 20 and seen how they sold?

Anyway, I just bought a few. Stevie's post makes me pretty excited. The Fugazi site (surprisingly) implies the discs are half-assed efforts, so it's good to hear they're not as no frills as described.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that they just wanted to give fans a variety to choose from. There's some interesting setlists there, including a few containing songs that they've never released.

I ordered the 98 Canadian show. I'll post a brief review of the quality/sound here once I hear it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I got show #3 (Bielefield, Deutscheland) in the post on Saturday. The sound quality is pretty solid, as are the performances. Tho guy botches some words here and there (song could have been a work in progress at that point, tho) and his voice is in tough shape in a couple places. All in all, worth the $8, which is how much I remember the shows I've seen costing me, so it sorta makes sense.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Are any of you sharing this stuff on slsk?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

sweet-- get the ball rolling to rip off fugazi already. ace!

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's going to end up there one way or another, Jack.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And Fugazi are pro-p2p!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mom, all my friends are jumping off of a cliff -- can I go too?"

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yer right -- fuck Fugazi for spending all that time make available those shows. grab some candy, stick in your pockets, and run out the door before the clerk notices behind his copy of Chic.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack, I'm BUYING SOME.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You're still a vicious and heartless criminal. It seems.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack sees right through me. I'll stop at nothing to destroy Fugazi!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevermind the fact that I've purchased copies of every single cd and video that they've ever produced, paid to see them four times, and will certainly buy a few more live cds from them if I'm pleased with the quality of the one I've already ordered.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My apologies for thinking that it's important to fully compensate artists for their work.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack, if bootleg/unofficial circulation had just been invented yesterday, your surprise and shock here would be understandable.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Vol. 19 in the mail today. It's a pretty great show and all, but I really think that they should have made some effort to master these things before selling them - they aren't kidding when they say that the levels are all over the place on these things. I wonder if all of them have sound this erratic, or if I ordered a show with more quirks than others. It's generally a very good recording, but on several songs the guitars are far too loud in the mix (and drown out the vocals), and in "Target" (my favorite Fugazi song), the mix suddenly shifts about a minute and a half in, pulling the treble up and dropping some of the bass out. I think I may still get another, but I'm not sure. I'd like to hear a bit from other shows to get a sense of how they sound.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That said, the version of "Suggestion" from the show I ordered is fucking amazing.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like a good idea, but I'll wait 'til more shows come online. There are some that I'd really like (esp. the IPU Convention in Olympia) that aren't up at the moment.

mike a, Monday, 3 May 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
I just got the volume 20 disc in the mail yesterday. I had ordered it exactly a month ago. Sure enough, it arrives the day after I email them complaining. The disc looks alright. It has a text printed on the disc and then an insert with some Friedman photos.

The show itself is pretty good. The levels are for the most part alright. Or, I should say that they are consistent, if very low. I have to turn the volume up very loud to hear the disc, but at least there are no sudden spikes in volume that blow out my speakers. There is a mic on a large bell that is very loud though. The vocals could definitely be much louder. It basically sounds like you are at the show but you're off to the side and kind of far away.

Also, the package that I got was postmarked Los Angeles. I had no idea that this was based out of LA. I am also wondering why it took so long for me to get my CD since I also live in LA.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine was shipped from DC.

The thing I don't get is that I've heard a good number of unmixed direct-from-soundboard bootlegs, and they never sound as erratic and messy as these Fugazi shows. Why would that be? Is it just that they have terrible and inconsistent people working the mixing boards?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been listening to 20 all morning long and it actually sounds better the more that I listen to it. The volume problem is still there, but these speakers also suck. It is making me nostalgic for the hundreds of live bootleg cassettes that I have in a garage.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)
