BULLYING?

I live with someone who has about 5000 records. He virtually never plays the same thing twice. However, in an attempt to educate me he always tries to make me guess what it is he is playing. Although this is apparently well-intentioned I find it stressful, and humiliating. What should I do?

Be all aloof and sarcastic: "I dunno...Abba?".

sdjygfdyjh@hg, Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not really sure there's a nice way to hell him to stop, but the next time he does this, ask him if he thinks you enjoy it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"to hell" = "to tell" ha ha ha, etc.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what does he listen to ??

so we can mock him

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Just try to have a normal conversation with him. Pay no attention to feelings of humiliation because you have your own interests and are your own person.

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I would just like to apologize to the people in my life who I've done that too. I never want to be that guy saying "GUESS!!! NO, JUST GUESS!!!!" again.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the extra o in "to(o)" stands for "oh christ, the memories."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

smack him around a little

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 24 April 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy owns 5000 records. He may be a dick, but no more than everyone else on ILM who owns 5000 records and CD's. These people are ubercool, so just be honoured that you're allowed to be in the vicinity of so many awersome records and take your humilation like a man.
Or just tell him that you don't give a fuck what he's playing, turn around, march into your room and play your own music at full volume just to piss him off.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

barry OTM. swallow your pride and do some more research if you can't identify the records.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

barry NOT OTM.

I think he's being a dick. ask him to stop.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

a guy with 5000 records means he has about 4600 crap ones. I feel sorry for this person.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy owns 5000 records. He may be a dick, but no more than everyone else on ILM who owns 5000 records and CD's. These people are ubercool,

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Just say "When I'm curious about what you're playing, I'll let you know." or "I don't know who it is, and I don't care."

bimble (bimble), Sunday, 25 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Do the right thing and tell him, "Look fuckface, I DON'T FUCKING CARE WHAT THE FUCK YOU'RE PLAYING!!!!! STOP IT!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!"

The direct approach is the best approach.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 25 April 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

You have every right to be irritated, but be grateful you've got a hoarder with a playful mind instead of a collector with a categorical mind. Better to feel like a contestant on a music-themed game show than a victim of the Spanish (limited edition picture sleeve) Inquisition of Never-Ending Lectures.

I say you parry with: "What do you think I think this is?" Or take up chess.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Sunday, 25 April 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"What do you think I think this is?"

Hahahaha

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 25 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid? -- You should just tell me to fuck off. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 April 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(Of course then it turns out that I really am the person referred to, doh!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 April 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Pawn a good chunk of his albums and then make him guess how much you got for them.

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Sunday, 25 April 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I sick, I like it when ppl make me guess what they're playing

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 25 April 2004 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

BanjoMania On the (Pawn) Money.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 25 April 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"What do you think I think this is?"
Hahahaha

OTM Debito, that's exactly what I was gonna say! Turn the tables on him.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 25 April 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn the tables on him

A fantastic pun [and truly accidental,] if I say so myself!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 25 April 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

look puzzled. tell him you played this game already. ask if he knows any others.

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 25 April 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I do this too. I think, not because I want to prove that they don't know, but because I want to know what and who they think it sounds like, to see if that will alter my impression. Like if I was playing, I dunno, MBV and asked what they thought it was and they said 'The Carpenters' I'd have to reevaluate what I think MBV sound like.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's prob'ly a curious, playful way to play the game and a pushy, dorkesque way.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for all the advice. Realise I probably made it sound worse than it is (and used a comma unnecessarily). I admitted in the first place that I was kind of ignorant about a lot of stuff, but interested to hear it, and felt I needed to be "educated". And he's not a dick, how dare you?

stupid?, Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

noodle otm

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)
