like when you hear a sample in its original context and you realize who sampled it? that is what we are doing here?

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! And these have to be first time discoveries for you as they happen! This is an ACTION thread!!!

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i was awake enough to remember!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh when i first saw pulp fiction, when "son of a preacher man" came on the soundtrack i was like, "'hits from the bong'?!?!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in a middle eastern restaraunt and they had a tape on of dancey middle eastern stuff, crazy fun stuff, and the bulk of it was John Holmes by Renegade Soundwave.

there's so many, though...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 25 April 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, are we separated at birth? You're the only other person I know here who likes UMC's "Fruits of Nature", Magazine 60's "Don Quichotte", and anything by Renegade Soundwave.. or at least will publicly plug them online on a regular basis.

The source: XTC, Explode Together
The sampler: Tlot Tlot, Pistolbuttsatwinkle*atwinkle

The source: Art of Noise, the ZTT era
The sampler: Prodigy, Firestarter

Plus an honorary mention to Warning by Green Day, for stealing Picture Book by The Kinks.

(Film Dialogue: "See if there's a black-and-white that can do a driveby.")
The source: Die Hard (Bruce Willis movie)
The sampler: Ice Cube, "Say Hi To The Bad Guy"

Source: Funkadelic "Get Off Your Ass And Jam"
Sampler: Public Enemy "Bring The Noise"

Source: Jimi Hendrix, "Are You Experienced?"
Sampler: Cypress Hill, "How I Could Just Kill A Man"

This was a weird one: I'd heard the Hendrix song hundreds of times, the Cypress Hill dozens, but never connected the two until one night I was listening to "AYE?" thru headphones after a toke or two.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

brian, maybe, but I think our tastes aren't as uncommon as we think, only for our relative age group...not that I know how old you are. I think the internet has changed things drastically and many many younger kids seem to more easily identify with oddly differing things, now that a)many genre walls seem to be falling and b)people like us keep writing about stuff on the internet. When I first stumbled on some 20 year old guys website that listed him as loving both Bobby O and the Desperate Bicycles, I was dumbfounded. I mean, I know lots of hi-nrg disco lovers and I know lots of DIY punk lovers, but didn't know many who somehow were wired to like both, but now theres many. Maybe I'm crazy to think this, whatever.

Somebody's mentioned this on another thread, but it freaked me out when I first heard it:

Source: Can - "Turtles Have Short Legs"
Sampler: Parappa the Rappa, Level 2 - Driving Test

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was like 16 we were watching the the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I recognized a tiny little bit of incidental dialogue (the female lead going "kirk, help!") that Nine Inch Nails had sampled for some song. My friends didn't care (even though they were huge NIN fans and I wasn't so much), but I was so proud of myself.

yesterday, a clint mansell soundtrack (dont ask why), and its............................LIL JON - THROW IT UP!

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 25 April 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard about or noticed the Parappa thing, not suprising as I wasn't familiar with that song when I was addicted to that game some years ago. Is it possible if I go back and listen to Driving Test that it'll make me hate that wonderful Can song, considering I really hated that fucking moose driving inspector?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 25 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I stopped hating the Moose once I'd beaten her. Now the Chicken TV Cook, she was evil.

Source: David Bromberg, Sharon
Sampler: Beastie Boys, Johnny Ryall

Just heard this one today. I feel like I must have noticed this before, but was shocked to hear it when I listened to this David Bromberg CD today. I hadn't listened to it in 6 or 7 years.

Source: Galt MacDermott- coffee cold
Sampler: Handsome Boy Modeling School- the truth

I'd listened to "the truth" many times for a couple of years, then late one night a few months ago I heard "coffee cold" on the radio; I kept expecting the vocals to start.

chad (chad), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Though it's not sampled as a part of the actual song, there's some Sublime song that begins with a bunch of random noise, including a few seconds of the Minutemen's "History Lesson Part 2" where you hear D. Boon sing "punk rock changed our lives." I was surprised when I first noticed it.

Serya (Z_Ayres), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

djdee2005, Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a track (can't remember which one) on the clairecords comp "atlantic flowers" that samples and loops the intro drum part of "she's lost control". the problem is they've edited it poorly so it seems slightly out of time, which was not a problem mr. morris suffered from

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lil Jon sample is from the Requiem For A Dream soundtrack. It's odd how so many people were ABSOLUTELY RIVETED by the film and started using the song for their own movie edits - I've heard it in at least 3 different extreme sports video trailers, the video yearbook for a friend's high school, bizarrely used in an ad for http://www.tiffanyteen.com, a vodka ad, and anything involving getting pumped....WITH CLASS.

That is, assuming Praga Khan sampled it from ZF and not from the original sermon.
