This is the thread where you help me improve my music collection, or at least one small corner of it

OK, here's the deal. I've always been proud (smug) about the diversity of my musical tastes. And rightly so: compared to most people, the variety of tunes I enjoy is indeed quite impressive. But, compared to many (most?) of you ILXers, I'm lagging behind. Now, my CDs are alphabetized; and, alphabetically, the two-letter combination of St-Su features the greatest array, among any other two-letter combo. So, I want you to take a look at what I have, and decide what I need, and recommend a suitable artist/band beginning with "St" or "Su." Tell me your favourites: If you feel I need some reggae, for example, maybe there's a Steel Pulse LP you love, so recommend it. Which Sun City Girls LP is best? Suede? Stereo MCs? Whatever: if you love it & I ain't got it, endorse it! (And don't bother mentioning Suicide, which I'll buy someday, or Superchunk, who suck.)

Now, here's what I've already got (and I will accept no scorn regarding Streisand/Styx/Supertramp!):
Stalk-Forrest Group, Carl Stalling, Status Quo, Steppenwolf, Stereolab, Isaac Stern, Rod Stewart, Alan Stivell, Stockhausen, Stone Roses, Stooges, Strange, The Stranglers, Stravinsky, Barbra Streisand, Strokes, Strunz & Farah, The Styrenes, Styx, Sugarloaf, Suicide Commandos, Yma Sumac, Donna Summer, Sun Ra, Supertramp, Supremes, Surf Guitar Greats

All right, now it's your turn. Broaden my horizons...NOW!

FUCK the Streets. They are garbage.

Please, Myonga, I beg you: don't listen to these tin-eared Brits.

You would fuckin' HATE the streets. I'm not trying to be a dick, but I know you would hate it. I know that 'cuz you have good taste. I've noticed your posts; you definitely understand the band dynamic in a way these knucklehead Brits don't. You like instrumentalists doing interesting things. Anyway, hold on .. let me check my collection...

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan seconded.

Try "Countdown to Ecstasy" for a poppier, rockier Dan, "Aja" for the jazzier side.

Oh, and Superdrag, who were so the Strokes only ten years ago.

chocolatepiekid (chocolatepiekid), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Streets = Status Quo + Stockhausen + Donna Summer + Surf Guitar Greats.

Therefore, you should give it a try, Myonga.

You'd walk easier if you took that big chip off your shoulder, Broheems.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Noodle Vague ... I am being totally honest: I am actually listening way through .... tonight he kind of lost me for a second though.. Sometimes Steve does that. He starts playing "Negro comedy" records and stuff that I really like, but sometimes they fall flat.. On those to Madonna's "Like A virgin" right now as I read your post ! It sounds like the greatest music I've ever heard. I put it on because I just got bored with my friend Steve Cushing's show. Usually on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings I listen all the occasions, I might pop in my own CD until Steve gets back on track. Tonight it was Madonna's Immaculate Collection.

Anywa, what was I saying ??? oh yeag, Madge is like, WAAAAYYY better than the STREETS. I say this as a proud resident of Rochester, Michigan.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm, drunk, and that post, sucks.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No worries Bro. No problem with Madge either.

good taste

i mean i'm usually with you on most stuff...but, uh?

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I dunno, Mullygrubber.. I'm usually with you, too!! You have great taste, yrself. I just get really sick of people being SO ANTITHETICAL to liek, evaluating great group performance. And I never fuckin' see it on ILM. I just rarely see folx praising this or that instrumentalist. And I think those people need their due. Whether it's fuckin' Phil Collins or Robert Nighthawk. I love pop music, but sometimes the seemingly militant, anti-instrumentalist attitude on ILM makes me backtrack for a 'sec. I'm just drunk at the moment. Don;t mind me.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, I still haven't helped my good friend Myonga!!

Hold on...

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 25 April 2004 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

udu wudu (udu wudu), Sunday, 25 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Just a quick scan, but I don't think anybody has mentioned Stereolab. I'm partial to 'Transient Random Noisebursts With Announcements.' Stray Dog had some good hard-rock stuff, and only one record (I think). Stories were kinda cool am rock. Sudden Infant is fine noise-scree. Sudden, Nikki is pretty consistently brilliant, but you might want to avoid 'The Jewel Thief' & 'Crown of Thorns.' 'Texas' is arguably his best work, but 'Waiting On Egypt' catches him in very Swell Maps-y form, as the band had just broken up.

The Stax/Volt box set! You will never regret it.

spittle (spittle), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually that first Sugarcubes album is pretty classic, you should have that in there.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 25 April 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post, if you can't afford the whole Stax/Volt set, at least just get the four disc set "The Stax Story," which is a pretty great compromise (I think the whole Stax/Volt thing is like 9 discs).

Also:

Summer Hymns--Voice Brother and Sister
Steely Dan--Katy Lied
Cat Stevens--probably Greatest Hits 2 if you only want one.

Stump: A Fierce Pancake. Contains, amongst other elements, instrumentalists doing interesting things.

OleM (OleM), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereo Total's S/T album has a great song called "Supergirl," which would itself qualify.

Also, where do you put your collections? Because Streets of Dakar is really good, synthy Senegalese dance stuff.

I keep wanting to add Siouxie and The Banshees, but I know, I know...

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Erwin Stache - has only one CD of noisy, Tietchens-like prepared piano and musique concrète ('Harmonie der Nicht Ganz Reellen Töne') that i know of. but the package includes a movement-sensitive buzzer, making it an instrument to be "played" along with the cd! find a copy, and this could be your ST-SU conversation piece.

Burkhard Stangl - 'Récital' or one of the duos with Sugimoto and/or Kurzmann.

Steven Stapleton & David Tibet - 'The Sadness of Things'. this is just beautifully unsettling violin-laced dreaminess. recommended no matter how you feel as a rule about Current 93 (some of Tibet's most subdued vocals) or NWW (not very cut-up).

Stasis - 'From the Old to the New'. very diverse post-Detroit and downtempo tastiness from Steve Pickton. sort of like Urban Tribe - or - Sterac - 'The Secret Life of Machines'. another Steve. Rachmad. and not so much 'post'-Detroit as 'good enough to have been conceived in' said city. something of an overlooked classic.

Joel Stern & Anthony Guerra - 'Stitch'. guitar/electronics improv duo. try this if you like what Fennesz does. but be prepared to like this more. i think it's better.

Meic Stevens - 'Outlander'. the Rhino Handmade suffers from sharp, trebly mastering, but this is still a phenomenal album.

no Stilluppsteypa? for shame! it's all good.

Such 'The Issue at Hand' - where else are you going to hear a shakuhachi flute (Yoshikazu Iwamoto), piano (John Tilbury) and percussion trio (Eddie Prévost) this sublime? it's also the best thing Prévost ever created outside of AMM. ok, his book is also good.

SCG - it's gotta be 330,003 Crossdressers, no?

The Supreme Dicks - much more interesting than the Strapping Fieldhands(?!). start with 'The Unexamined Life'. you'll want it all, eventually.

2nd(or whatever)ed: Steeleye Span (first 5), Sugimoto, Sun Dial (all you need is 'Other Way Out'), SFA, Supersilent.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Surface of Eceyon: The King Beneath the Mountain

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What is Tired Sounds of. . . like compared to Avec Laudenum (which is great)?

I enjoy Melissa Stylianou's Bachelorette a fair bit. She's a Toronto jazz singer. Pretty soft, not out at all, but very nice. Yes, she covers the Bjork song.

And I've come around to wholeheartedly agreeing re Supersilent 6! The keyboard sounds should appeal to the Styx fan in you.

I haven't heard Does This Look Infected? but All Killer No Filler isn't bad.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

MS Subbulakshmi, like, for sure. The 1983 UN concert is good.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

>What is Tired Sounds of. . . like compared to Avec Laudenum (which is
>great)?

i like it better. strings and horns are woven more perceptibly through the usual clouds of drone. plus, it just keeps going and going and going - it's sprawling, and though it's sometimes hard to stay in the right mood for the duration (i think the lp version is 6 sides, which probably works best for splitting it up), if you already know that you dig SOTL, it's definitely must-have.

My, what a marvellous band this SotL is!

By the way, if you like SotL, you would probably also like Head Phone Over Tone's Solar Sails, my 2003 album of the year. I can burn it for anyone who emails me.
