Do other people like this producer? He was all over the last De La Soul album which I thought sounded as sonically interesting and addictive as it is possible for a largely "traditionalist" hip hop album to sound - mind you that's an unfair comment 'cos I don't listen to much traditionalist hip hop. But certainly when people talk about producers as being both "real" hip hop and experimental (Jay Dilla, Madlib etc. etc.) the default standard I set in my head is Dave. I like it how he's not afraid to be all sugary 'n' sentimental (see De La's awesome "Simply") and yet his stuff has that woozy stop-start funk quality to it as well.

Inspired because I picked up the Prozack (from Foreign Legion) album purely on the basis that I ignore this type of music too much and cos it was super-cheap (Minna and other Melbourne people: JB Hi-Fi's discount section is really good at the moment!) and, whaddaya know, despite the presence of luminaries like Pete Rock and Madlib and Jay Dilla, it's Dave's beats I'm instantly drawn to.

So what's everyone else's verdict? And what else should I check out (by him or others)?

I don't get the impression Supa Dave does a whole lot (that's been released anyway). You might like the new Murs album, as produced by 9th Wonder from Little Brother (who also did The Threat on The Black Album). I know I do.

9th Wonder = Primo + Jay Dee + Pete Rock - 14 pieces of Flair

don't get me wrong, i like him, i just haven't seen him do anything as ground breaking as any of those producers

I don't like "Threat" much - it's one of my least favourite tracks on The Black Album actually. Is his other stuff better?

the Little Brother album is pretty great. a lot more Jay Dee inspired. i haven't heard the Murs record
