The Streets are rubbish. "Walking down the street, eating some chips, saw myself a bird, fancied giving her one" etc etc Utter toss.

JJ72, on the other hand, produced such incredible bursts of pop perfection as "Snow" and "Oxygen".

They win hands down.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're both pretty lame. the streets are at least funny sometimes.

You should buy Echo & the Bunnymen "Ocean Rain" (4.99 from hmv) and give yerself a break from all this late nineties nonsense.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Echo and the Bunnymen. I might buy something by The Cure though.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

calum shd buy 69 love songs. if he hasn't already.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

hey norman!!

kraftwwerk???

calum is a lost refugee of britpop. No hope. JJ72 is the britpop refugee pick of choice! see: embrace.

doomie x, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello DP!! I've started the kwerk article, but am currently swamped w/bike repairs, so it's going slow.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

cool!!!!

any thoughts on goblin, norman???!???

doomie x, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Goblin? As in Suspiria fame Goblin?

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I do a mean JJ72 impression.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

calum - go buy that magnetic fields record. hours of listening pleasure, i guarantee it.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

JJ72: "Walking down the street, reading some Camus, saw myself a bird, AND DENN IT DOYYYYYYYYYYYYYED"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

he's right. Even if you don't actually like it, it's an interesting project.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jj72 are recording with the stone roses producer. i personally think they are mediocre, and will not sell many records again.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

DP I will have to pick up some Goblin recs. I used to have a couple, but sold them years ago.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

wygart one day I will phone you and catch you unawares with my JJ72 impression. I tried already, but had your number wrong by one digit (some poor cunt must've had a fit when they got that answerphoen message).

x-post - Whoch producer, kilian? They used loads on the second album.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

leckie

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting that he's still thought of as being the Roses producer, whent he biggest album he's worked on is The Bends.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

John Leckie is generally a good producer, though silk purse/sow's ear etc, jj72 are pretty mediocre I must admit.

I hear a little Goblin in Ars Nova, now that I think about it, though AN are MUCH more extreme, to the point of being near-unlistenable.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is jj72
1) named after 72 jam jars?
2) the band that lost their 'eye candy' bass player, and lost all credibility (in my eyes) when they hired another 'eye candy' bass player
3) sound more like patti smith than patti smith does?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i just used the stone roses to get calum excited at the prospect of a roses-jj combo. he's easily pleased like that.

(jj attended belvedere college also attended by james joyce = jj + last triumphant year in leinster senior rugby cup ='72. or so they told my dad (who taught them) possibly they were lying)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Streets are rubbish. "Walking down the street, eating some chips, saw Louise from Sleeper, fancied giving her one" etc etc Utter toss.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I right in guessing that everybody who's ever heard of of JJ72 has now posted to this thread?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My mate Karim's not here yet. He heard my impression once.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

But get him and kilian's dad and yeah, full house!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

surely you guys are not talking about Italian goth rockers Goblin who do some suitably atmospheric soundtracks (pick of the bunch - "Suspiria", but also "La Chiesa" and "Phenomena") but whom you'd have to be deaf/ retarded/ goth or all three to have to actually want to listen to without the visual accompanyment.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear Nick's JJ72 impression. Pls post somewhere.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, mp3 plz nick.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If you wanna email me, I'll give you my mobile number and you can phone after 7pm and request a private performance.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

o.k. now calum's offended me with his lack of musical tastes. man. goblin rule. i can buy yr musical collection in any charity shop for under a fiver.

doomie x, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You can buy most things in a charity shop for under a fiver.

Tangerine Dream, Box set, 5 lps. Virgin Records, 1982 or thereabouts. £5.

recently.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Goblin are such a dodgy death metal band copied by extremely bad teenagers dressed in black (c.f. the otherwise splendid Anchor Bay release of "Suspiria"). They do wonderful soundtracks for the actual visuals onscreen, but listening to them in your own room kinda defeats the point as without the black gloves and sharp knives they just sound like bad Satanic electro shit. Anyway, Pash, I thought you figured all Argento films were misogynistic or some such claptrap?

If you want the tunes to seek out then seek them out with the actual films. The best Goblin score is undoubtedly "Suspiria" - the full CD comes with the US 3 disc set but, again, the music only really works well when put in the context of the movie (which is probably the best horror film ever made). Soavi's "La Chiesa" ("The Church") has a not bad Goblin score, and "Profondo Rosso" ("Deep Red") features the early template for "Halloween". Then there is "Dawn of the Dead" (original), "Phenomena" and "Tenebrae".

The rest of their stuff doesn't even sound that hot in the context of the films ("Martin"/ "Contamination"/ "Buio Omega").

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad's bigger than your dad.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Having seen several argento films, the conclusion I came to is that they are beautifully-filmed but rubbish.
I am not aware of any teenagers who copy Goblin. I think, Like Popol Vuh, they are one of the few bands whose music stands up apart from the films.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post haha nick!!)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pash, Argento is one of the greatest directors of all time. Rubbish? Are you insane? Did you watch "Suspiria"?

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yr so wrong. it hurts me calum. but not that much. c'ya!

doomie x, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not really in the mood for arguing about it to be honest. I've seen suspiria, tenebrae and profondo rosso and some others I've forgotten the names of (I shared a flat w/trash movie/industrial kultur addicts for several years, they had/have BIG collection of "cult movies") I thought the cinematography and look of the films was outstanding, but the content was garbage. Sorry, but there y'go.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry is just not enough! "Suspiria" is, just, well... too great for words.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember liking the first JJ72 disc at the time (like, 2000? 2001?), but it feels like haven't listened to it in a decade....and cannot imagine having a desire to anytime soon.

The Streets? Well, the first album was amusing. But, I'd be sincerely fibbing if I said I played it very recently either.d

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The correct answer was "fries".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Formulae was a good comeback single.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If you were coming back from a severely debilitating accident perhaps.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

JJ72 never had a top 20 single.

Good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not a nice attitude at all.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry is just not enough!

Haha you can eat it!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Echo and the Bunnymen. I might buy something by The Cure though.
-- CRW (...), April 27th, 2004.

weirdly enough an actor called Ian McCullough appeared in many 70s zombie films, although i can't remember if he was in any Argento films.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, McCulloch

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he was in a trio of low budget movies - the closest link to Argento is that "Contamination" director Luigi Cozzi was a one time Asst Dir. to Argento.

CRW (CRW), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ive never haerd anything by the srteets and very litle by jj72. but i would like to say that sergej prokovievs soundtrack for alexander nesvky is the greatest thing ever.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

omg i forgot JJ72

blueski, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

JJ72 - weren't Daniel Radcliffe & Elijah Wood big fans of them? I liked them as well, mainly because one of them was quite cute.

danzig, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Reader, we are to let thee know,
JJ72's body only lies below;
For could the grave JJ's soul comprise,
Earth would be richer than the skies.

JJ72 was born during an Easter many seasons ago; today it dies on the cusp of midsummer eleven years later. Mark Greaney, Fergal Matthews & Sarah Fox wish to express their deepest and darkest gratitude to all of those with impeccable taste who helped and supported the band. We remember everything, from mechanical birds in Japan to angels in arid Arizona, from broken bones and Berlin birthdays to predatory Portsmouth spiders. For those who disliked and perhaps despised (gasp) JJ72, thank you - how did beautiful photographs exist without a negative?! We crafted two monuments of magnificence for the future aural pleasure and pain of all would be JJ believers and doubters....and for those who care not for the passing of the petulant yet powerful pup....shame on you! Thank you to Hilary Woods for being a dazzling damsel and thank you to all who played music in/with the band. You know who you are.
